I don’t really see how that’s relevant when in fact they are all failing leaving the vehicles in operable while driving, this is very common therefore a product defect. This should be remedied to all Jeep consumers that have provided proof of the PTU failure
Not always. As @osimj mentioned, they don't all fail the same way. Some fail leaving the car completely immobile. Some allow the car to work in rear-wheel drive mode only. Depends on exactly what's damaged.

I have a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus 4x4 manufactured 12/2018. PTU failed while driving, dealership recommended PTU, propeller shaft & rear differential, over $8000. Also no PTU available with a huge back order. So far my vehicle isn’t on any recall list. I’m not sure how they are figuring out who is on the recall when all the vehicles are failing the same way.
Hi @Jensam ,

  • Do you know if you have an AD1 or AD2 PTU?

  • Also, explain the exact symptoms you experienced when driving.

  • Do you currently have a "SVC 4WD light on"?

  • Is your Cherokee driveable (stays in FWD mode) or immobile?

Note, if it is your PTU, replacing the driveshaft and RDM is not necessarily required unless there's a specific issue with them as well.

okay I think I may have not made my point very clear, my only point in this is that the PTU on the Jeep Cherokee is failing at a rate that would suggest that it is a manufacturing failure, I’m not pretending to be an expert on the case I was just curious as to how they are determining what vehicles out of the 2017-2019 years are included that’s all. My PTU failed driving down the road going 40mph and left the vehicle immobile. So no I don’t know exactly what part of the PTU failed. I looked into some other complaints and they seemed virtually identical to the problem I had that’s all.

Back to the topic of this thread...

I get advance notices from USPS of mail on the way. Look what's showing up in my mailbox today! I'll post as soon as I get the mail this afternoon. If ANYONE has already got their notice, please share! Can't wait to find out what they are doing about it.

In a way, it's sort of a perverse gift. "You are screwed! Thought you should know."

Ah, got it. Thanks for the clarification. (y)

Well this is how we all felt with the earlier model PTU recall stuff, it was dragged out some and then it was just a software patch.
Due to this being another issue with the AD2 they may have to be figuring something more of a mechanical fix instead and implementing a plan , especially since dealers will be overloaded.
or they may have to be implementing a software and warranty extension and some sort of loaner program if it eventually fails.
when you search for new 2 speed PTUs it is a hard find.
They may be having to set up a rebuild shop in Auburn Hills in the empty spaces where they layed off all the people and hire techs to rebuild them with AAM tech support., then get them out to dealers and take the cores back there to keep the process going if they are being forced to actually do a fix now.

I'm losing faith in the FCA brand. From NHTSA:

What Is a Safety-Related Defect? The United States Code for Motor Vehicle Safety (Title 49, Chapter 301) defines motor vehicle safety as “the performance of a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment in a way that protects the public against unreasonable risk of accidents occurring because of the design, construction, or performance of a motor vehicle, and against unreasonable risk of death or injury in an accident, and includes nonoperational safety of a motor vehicle”

FCA has known about this issue since at least June 4, 2020.

OK, @JeepCares, this isn't funny anymore. How much longer do we need to be exposed to "unreasonable risk of death or injury in an accident"? Until your accountants give up and authorize a production run from AAM of 2-speed PTUs that are actually "safe"?

I'm almost in the camp of "Love my Cherokee, but does anyone want to buy this death trap? I'll give you a great deal! Just sign this waiver. No, it's not anything serious."

I have more than one vehicle. Now whenever I want to go somewhere and say "Which vehicle?", my wife says "Anything but the Cherokee". :poop:

Meanwhile, at Stellantis headquarters...🫤🤔
Like I said, this isn't funny anymore. The "injury or death" threat is real. Debbie Downer or Realism Richard? I've been called a Dick before so I guess I'm just realistic.

Is there a Lawyer in the group??? We need an official JCC class action lawsuit...🤔😉😁

I wonder how many recall notices for vehicles have went out to owners where they are told, 'Hey, this problem may result in a serious accident, but we don't have a fix for it yet.' Gee, thanks for letting me know.

Well, I guess we just have to hope that it's not a sudden failure, but rather that we get either a warning light or noticeable noise or vibration before the snap ring fails.

Just got my notification. Really hope they have a fix soon. Already backed out of a hard timeframe plan for cross country road trip, but feeling reluctant to do it till there is a fix and I can have it done. Really hoping it's figured out before July cause if I have to push my trip too much, it's not gonna be able to happen. Because of the run up for back to school then the holiday's at work. I'm reluctant to put in for time off and lock myself in, but also if I don't soon, it will be too late to get the time off.

In both of my cases there was no warning, just a loud pop/bang, and insanely there were no warnings/CELs after the fact either.
The first time was travelling about 100km/h uphill on the highway while passing a semi; that was a butt-puckering experience! I was somehow able to cut back across traffic over to the shoulder with the momentum I had left. The 2nd time was just driving in the city and got the loud pop/bang followed by a bunch of crunching. In that case I could still drive at least. No warning lights/messages of any kind before, during, or after either failure.
