I go to the Jeep dealer in Ramsey, NJ. They always seems to have both the PTU and RDM oil in stock. I think it's a dealer inventory-specific thing. The dealer closest to me said they have to normally order them in cases so if they don't do a lot of PTU/RDM fluid changes, they don't always have them in stock. Probably different for each dealer?
I’ll get on the phone this week. I have a few Jeep dealers around I can check with. Did try internet search and everyone who use to have some are all out of stock. Was looking into Redline

It's a damn shame, when you can't even get routine fluids, let alone common parts nowadays for our "disposable cars"...🤔😎

To me it looks like brand new. The dry climate is keeping the metal from rusting (y)
In fact, we have 4 or 5 days of rain per year... So basically that mud and wet durty that you usually see on other cars across other countries, you won't see here. When it rarely rains here, usually shortly afterward I give the car a full body wash, including washing underneath.

Pros and cons, here the issue is the extreme hot and dry weather that makes all the plastic parts to dry, and make them show that weird white cooler, not to mention the dry cracks across the rubber parts around the rear lights, windshield etc.

Yes...

It's not lifetime, that's BS, there is no such thing as life time fluid.

1- Locate the fill holes in the aft session of the RDM.

Clean up the magnet connectors. After lots of torture sessions in the desert, well it was not
that bad.

Use a vacuum pump and a very thin tube.

repeated the procedure on the left side.

the fluid that came out was like black/brown in color, it was in really bad condition.

We were able to pull out 1 litter of fluid.
We filled both sides until the fluid starts to spill out from the fill holes. We pumped in 1.3 liters..

I went out for a short drive...

Came back to the car shop, and filled it again until fluid started to spill again. More 300ml has gone in...

Service done.

Good thing is that my RDM seems to be in very good shape, with no leakings at all.

Now I can torture the car feeling more relaxed, given that fluid is not a condition anymore to fail my RDM :D
Hello

The TH RDU has a two-chamber structure, and initially used two types of oil.
Currently, it seems that both chambers have been integrated into the same oil 68227766AB.
On the left is the differential compartment, and on the right is the clutch compartment.
If you put 68227765AA on the right side, it may affect the clutch.

Who can confirm that?

I was aware of the hydrolic used on the top for the locking mechanism

Not me. That is not a picture of a 2014 TH RDM.

Quote from Chrysler Academy Student Workbook page 138: "The RDM hydraulic fluid is used to apply the clutch. The fluid is filled-for-life, so fluid service should only be required after pump motor or pressure sensor replacement. If a fluid refill is required, the vehicle must be placed on a hoist, the RDM lowered, and the hydraulic fluid cover removed."

The 2 rear facing 3/8" socket magnetic plugs are for topping up the gear oil.

I your Jeep dealer doesn't have a part, they can tell you the nearest Jeep dealer that does.
that sounds familiar. I think I remember calling 1 & they told me who else to call. which I did to confirm they had it before driving there. pretty common for retailers. I do it all the time at my PT job at the big box home improvement store

exactly... the red hydraulic must be replaced from the top cover, taking RDM down for the service.

Hi all,

  • Yes, the hydraulic fluid in an older Cherokee uses a reservoir on top. The clutch pack assembly is an entirely different section from the differential side that uses the all-familiar 70W-80 gear oil.

  • The question which is still open (unless someone has actually cracked a 2019+ reservoir-less RDM open) is to confirm whether it still uses two fluids (gear oil and hydraulic) or whether it all runs on gear oil alone. Note, the RDM has always had access plugs in the hydraulic section. See photo below with "1" and "2" as well as the other photos below from previous threads. It could be that Stellantis just decided to reduce the complexity of the RDM and remove the reservoir with a direct-fill clutch pack using the access plugs as the fill hole (besides the complexity of the reservoir internal fluid passages, the cover tends to rust out over time). Until someone opens it and confirms, I don't think it's 100% clear yet.
Thoughts? Has anyone actually opened a non-TH 2019+ clutch area?

This is the new part number: 68227765GB Available from Moparonlineparts.com for $33.73 USD. Lubricant 68227765GB | Mopar Online Parts
Today I bought 68227765AB for $25.35 USD. The Jeep dealer only has 1 left in stock.

For desert driving where it is hot, synthetic 85 viscosity should be fine. The W in 75W means Winter, not 'weight', or viscosity.
The difference between 80 and 85 will not be noticeable in actual operation. The RDM isn't shifting gears like a manual transaxle.

For the Canadians, 70W is critical. When it is below freezing if the oil does not have the W (Winter) rating it WILL be too thick in viscosity.

My personal preference for extreme use synthetic gear oil is Red Line. Red Line Synthetic Oil. Gear Oil
Which Red Line Gear oil do you use?

I contacted Redline about an alternative to Mopar RDM and this was their response

I think the main concern is will be viscosity. It may not seem like they are too different however, there can be a significant difference. Most 75-80’s can be in the range of 45-65cst at 40c, while most 100-115cst at 40c. If you need a substitution I would suggest Redline GL-5 75-85, it may not be exactly the same however, the vis is 66cst at 40c. the difference in operating temp is even closer somewhere around 1cst +/-. I hope that helps.

I've been following this thread for later reference. I don't believe "lifetime fluids" for one instant. Heck, I don't believe in the oil life gauge on the dash either. I figure this is something that I'm going to have to do, or get done, later. My question is, when? I've a 2018 trailhawk , with 80,600 ish miles as I'm posting this. I figure maybe 90, or 100, but I'm just making assumptions. Also, is this something a jeep dealership or local mechanic would do for an arm or a leg, or they just categorically want to replace the RDM?

My 2018 Trailhawk just rolled 81,000, and I'm pretty sure it's on the original oil. So I think I'm going to do this sooner than later. But I'm confused as to what oil to order. Should I be ordering both oil types or is the hydraulic oil all i need for both sides? Checking mopars website, the 68227766AB hydraulic oil is a fitment for my Cherokee, but the 68227765AA(Gear Lubricant) is not.

The best I could find is the BMW, which has exactely the same specifications of the Mopar, which I have used to service my RDM.

Hmmm, in that posting, it looks like a sticker saying "SAE 70W-80" was put on the bottle. There are other photos on eBay of the same bottle without the sticker and there's no mention of GL-5 or 70W-80. Just be sure that's the genuine rating. (y)
