service shifter

i have a 2015 cherokee sport, i have seen this message a few times. when it pops up all the shifter lights come on, and the dash screen shows nothing but the message. if i turn off the motor wait a few seconds then restart it, the message goes away. part of me wants to just ignore it for now, but just as some one pointed out, the message was created for a reason, and some one, some where has to know what that reason is.

Part is on back order

I have returned to this forum after having purchased a '14 Cherokee Limited, with most the bells and whistles. About two months ago, I received the error message "Service Shifter." It went away after a single incident. Fast forward to about 4 weeks ago, I started getting the same error, but not frequently. On December 13, the message reappeared as I was leaving work. I had the lights on the shifter mechanism followed by the message. The message appeared about 20 times in a 15 minute drive. I called the dealership and dropped it off on 12/20. I received a phone call from the dealership on 12/22 advising me they needed to replace the "entire part, but that it was on back order.

They then told me that the car was not driveable (cold weather + snow = possible stranding). I then received a call on 12/29 advising me that not only was the part on backorder, but it was on four months backorder. I purchased a lifetime warranty, and for my $100 deductible the part is covered. Given the vehicle is not driveable, I have been provided a loner (a Ram 1500). I am told that it is being raised to Jeep, and maybe they'll harvest a part, however they don't know what they'll do.

Keep you posted. :surprise:

I just purchased a 2017 GC Trailhawk. I am getting service shifter lights since 1000 miles. I'm taking it in tomorrow. I sure hope I don't have this same problem.

Mine comes on right at startup and doesn't allow me to shift out of park most the time. If the shifter lever does allow me to move it doesn't initiate a gear anyways. I have it parked with the e-brake just in case it decides to ghost ride off the driveway tonight.

Maybe I'm a freak coincidence, but sounds very similar to what 2014-15 models are seeing?

Any status update?

Received the Jeep back today after 11 days. Andrea at JeepCares worked her magic. I guess I'll have to find another reason to buy a 2017!

Thanks to all of you

I bought a 2014 Grand Cherokee, the service shifter message came on, and my local dealer just replaced an electronic module in the steering wheel for $1000. I questioned why the shifter itself wasn't being addressed. I just found this thread and I think it will be very helpful in resolving both the issue with my Jeep (the service shifter message still appears) and with my issue with the dealer. Was anyone else offered this noneffective and expensive solution?

Hi portangelesjeep,

I'd be happy to follow up with your dealership for you if needed. I would also recommend entering your VIN here to check for any software updates for your Uconnect System: https://www.driveuconnect.com/software-update/.

Andrea, How do I get a hold of you? Email? Phone? My Jeep is now sitting dead in my garage and will not respond to any key fob or starting procedure. It is not the battery. Thanks.

Hi there,

Just in case you are not that familiar with forum messaging... Click on next link :
http://jeepcherokeeclub.com/members/86657-jeepcares.html

Once there, click on "Send Message"
...and then from the drop-down menu click on "Send a private message to JeepCares"

Good luck...

Interesting item for me tonight, I don't have any messages in the EVIC but I did get the dreaded 'all lights on' with the shifter tonight...hopefully not a harbinger of doom...

I just purchased a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee about 3 weeks ago with 41 miles on it and the service shifter message has come up twice for me. The 1st time I brought it to the dealership and they said it was not active and that there could be several reasons that could cause a message like that (blah blah blah). They removed the code and once again, a week later the same message appeared... but after 2 days my check engine light went away and the message disappeared! Not sure what to think or what to do! If it it happens again I'm going to suggest that the dealership replace my shifter assembly.

My 2017 today gave me a message when I attempted to take off after picking my wife up in front of Sams Club. I put it in Drive and it didn't drive (didn't move at all)--message said to move to either Park or N and release the brake--the brake was already released. I was in a congested area so I am not sure what I did, but it worked the next time. I think I might have just gone to N and back to D and it worked fine then. I hope that was a one time event.

When this happened on my 2014 TH the dealer found code: P1C86-1D PRNDL DISPLAY CIRCUIT CURRENT OUT OF RANGE. Replaced the shift console to resolve the problem. My EVIC did not have a message. The Jeep shifted gear just fine. When you turn the Jeep OFF and open the drivers door the problem goes away, usually for several weeks.

A few days after I picked up my jeep an error message popped up. I went to the dealer and they did a flash update. It went away but now it's back. Anyone else see this and if so, what was the remedy. I read somewhere that it's the shifter module but who knows? I've really had bad luck so far.
I have also had this problem. First about a month ago, the dealer charged me about $200 for a flash update, but never found a problem. The same warning light just came on again yesterday, but I've not been back to the dealer yet? Were you ever able to resolve your issue?
