I have a 2016 Limited v6, with 17k miles, and on my drive home this evening from work the light came on the driver display (as others have reported) and all lights on the shifter were red. The message did not go off until I turned the car off. I don't have an appointment with the local dealer for tomorrow, but I am planning on going there anyway and see what they say. I will at least have the info from here in my back pocket to question the dealer about.

I had the shifter message 4 times. Last time when it came up, I pulled over to ERS and shifted minimum 10 times forwards and backwards. Since then, the message never showed up again. So I'm without the message for 8 weeks now. I really had not used ERS often, maybe it was simply some kind of oxidation or just some dust, that came into the shifter switches.

I just got the "service shifter" message and all red shift indicator lights yesterday for the first time at ~10k miles. I stopped at a store and when I restarted things were fine for about 1/4 mile before the error message returned. Hopefully the dealer has the parts in stock so I don't need multiple visits and rental cars.

Service Shifter Error Message - 2016 Jeep Cherokee

Got the Service Shifter Error message. I received it about a month ago, then the transmission shut down on me. I had to get it towed to dealer. They fixed problem, now the shifter servioce message has gone on again. I will keep posting to help others.

Hi thebrunner5,

I'm sorry to hear the message has returned. If you have another appointment scheduled, please feel free to send me a private message with your VIN if you would like to have a case opened.

A video of what can also happen, although I never got the service shifter message I got just about every other notification

Mine was fixed in a day with a transmission flash

I took my 2017 Jeep Cherokee to the dealer yesterday and they still have it for the same reason. The Service Shifter appears and all the lights for Park, Drive, Neutral and all .... light up when it happens. Will keep you posted on what the dealer tells me.

WARNING TO ALL! Sadly, I was in a very bad accident early this past Saturday, and my car will be totaled!! I strongly believe something mechanical with the shifter caused the accident. I actually had an appointment that same morning at 9am for Service because my car had to be serviced, oil change and mainly b/c the “check engine” light on and the “Service Shifter” warnings were coming on periodically, also remote start would start the car then fail and shut off. Saturday morning while on the highway, the Service Shifter warning came on, and all the lights on the shifter lit up red. The wheels locked on me, I could not steer the car and I lost control and hit the divider, spun 360 on the parkway. I am still shaken to my core! The car felt like it went into "Park" while still moving!! I don't know what to do! The car is at a GEICO authorized shop and not the dealer. How can I prove this is what caused my accident?? All I have right now is the email from my Uconnect when it alerted me that the Check Engine light went on the first time on Jan 9th! Any Advice!!!

Dang...so glad you're OK. Maybe contact @JeepCares here on the forums to get a case opened? From there it may be up to them to decide the next steps. I'm sure there's some kind of "black box" that could have very useful info to determine what happened.

I have sent a private message to @JeepCares. I also already escalated it to Jeep and got a case number. Hoping to hear back soon for solution to have them inspect. The shop won’t touch it because of the current status of “total loss,”so I am desperate to have it looked at by rep or towed to my dealership!!

FYI- I had :( a 2016 Cherokee fully loaded (safety tech, technology pkg, Luxury pkg, moonroof, premium speakers, NAV) I am devastated!! That was my baby! “Big Red”

Hi I am new here - I have a 2015? Cherokee (maybe 2016 - who knows) - not long after I got the car, the service shifter/red lights came on - I took the car to the dealer a number of times - they updated software and did nothing else. The problem continued on occasion so we ignored it. Turned car off and restarted and all fine! A couple of weeks ago, the problem escalated. Sometimes we have to start the car 3 or 4 times to reset. I pull up, put car in R to go in driveway, the lights/notice appear.
A week ago, we stop at a red light, engine shuts off, hubby lifts foot from brake and the engine hesitates to restart and things kind of blinked? but it did restart and we went on our way. We thought it was just a glitch. A couple days ago, he's at a light, lifts foot from brake and the engine nearly dies and the A comes on with a !
We look in the manual and can't find a thing. He turns car off and back on - we override the A and go home - park the car - done driving it! (and the red lights/shifter back on when get home)
SO my friend has same car and yesterday she's driving down highway - A issues comes on and service engine. At a light, her car died and wouldn't start! Took her numerous tries so she takes it home and parks!
We both call dealer and they tell us no appointments to service the car until March 8 - seriously MARCH 8! So I just take car there this morning and leave it - they said they'll run diagnostics and it appears there is a transmission recall (I didn't know this) - now it's wait and see.
I am very uncomfortable driving the car now - the lease is for another 6-8 months? :( Now what ......

I have a 2017 TH and received the service shifter error along with all the lights lighting up. That happened on Monday. Took it to the dealer on Tuesday morning and they said they would look at it. Wednesday they told me that the TH is not drivable, it needs a new shifter assembly, and that it will take a least a month for the parts to arrive and be installed. It will all be covered under warranty. In the meantime, they have provided a GC to drive. I am not happy with how long it is going to take to get repaired.

I have a 2017 TH as well. About a month ago I got the dreaded Shifter Service and full red lights. It'll go away then reappear at odd times. Guess I'm going to make an appointment with the local dealership.

Hi Magista,

We're sorry for any inconvenience you've encountered. Keep us updated on your dealer visit. We're available via direct message and would be happy to help if an additional layer of assistance is needed.

Has there been any solution for the Service Shifter problem? Our jeep cherokee 2015 latitude has been doing it for months, but only here and there and only while parked. Now it seems to be picking up steam and doing it more often and once while moving. Unfortunately, we are not under warranty and I fear it is going to cost more than I can afford to fix this. :(

I have my TH back. I am glad that it did not take as long as they said. Replaced the shifter assembly and did not cost anything. I am glad that there were no further issues with it.

I just got the service shifter today. Driving to dinner. about 1min into driving.

I was in manual mode? gear 4?

After I got to dinner a restart has fixed it for now.

forgive the bad quality pictures. GF took them while driving and I didnt take a set before restarting.

The dash text is "service shifter" all lights were on.

There was no gear indication in manual mode (1-9) and it didnt do much.... It would change the drive letters from gray to white PRND. When switching it left and right.

I find I use it alot to hold 4th or 5th gear as I dont like hitting hilly roads with 1200rpm
