Service Shifter error message

A few days after I picked up my jeep an error message popped up. I went to the dealer and they did a flash update. It went away but now it's back. Anyone else see this and if so, what was the remedy. I read somewhere that it's the shifter module but who knows? I've really had bad luck so far.

Aside from the error message everything is fine. I spoke to an A tech who is a friend of mine and he told me that there are new flashes for the computers and radio all of the time and that it's getting out of hand. He did say that the original flash I had already was to correct the issue I am having. I guess it wasn't 100%. I'll just wait a little while and see how many more flashes will be available in the future. I can't keep going every time a new one comes out. It's a shame.

Interestingly enough, after I spoke with the dealership I was told to see what happens after starting the car a few times and putting some miles on it. As of yesterday, it went back to normal. So far so good. Now, I gave some thought as to what I did before this error message appeared. The first time, I started the car from my phone to see how it worked. It started as it should, but once I sat in the car trying to figure things out, the message appeared. The dealer flashed the computer and it was gone. Then on Tuesday night, I thought I was opening the rear hatch but instead, started the car remotely. That's when it happened again. Not realizing the coincidence at the time, I tried to think of what I did before the message occurred. The remote start was the common denominator. If I can go a few weeks without the message, I will use the remote start to see what happens. Coincidence? Maybe, but I'm happy the message is gone for now. What one has to do with the other is beyond me.

Error message came back on so it has nothing to do with the remote start. What I don't understand is this. An engineer created this error message for a reason, which is why I see it. How is it possible that no one knows what it means? This has to be one of most ridiculous I've ever encountered.

Lcrngrs -

No, you're not alone. I just started getting this same EVIC message yesterday. I have a 2WD Latitude and message seems to occur right after first engine start of the day (engine is cold) and shift into gear. Car appears to be functioning normally, drives normally, tran seems ok. I have not had any other issues with the vehicle after 1400 miles.

I'll bring it in to dealer on Monday and I'm sure they'll flash it also. Just want to let you know it's happening somewhere else too.

Sorry to hear but at least I'm not nuts. I had a flash done but the message came back a few days later. It's so intermittent. I can go days without it then it happens five times a day. I found someone on a durango forum who stated he had the same issue and they changed his shifter module. I have contacted him to see if the message came back since his repair. I will post once he answers me. Please let me know what your dealer says but mention the module. He also posted some codes. B1296 PTS SENSOR and P0928-00, which is what was on his repair order.

I can replicate the message at will...its because of a slow shift to gear.

The latter
Computer is wondering why you're in between gears i'd guess

Go to your Cherokee...hold the stick in between P/R. It'll show up. Keep going all the way to R and it'll be fine.
Now, shift it from P to R with average speed...no message.

OK..that's something to get checked out...sorry must have missed that detail.

Update: Dealer diagnosed the problem as an issue with the shift knob (they detected some voltage spikes). Shift knob was replaced, and message disappeared. For about 400 miles. Then it popped up again quickly right after a cold start. Haven't seen the message again since then. Dealer said if message does come back, they may need to replace entire shifter unit. I'm going to wait and see before deciding if I go back - so far, I'm good with it.

I've been waiting for a week now for the entire shift assembly and module which will be replaced due to the error message. For some reason, parts seem to take forever from the warehouse. This same dealer dented the hood of my daughters 2011 liberty over a month ago and are going to give us a new hood. It is supposedly on b/o and I am still waiting and they have the nerve to tell me there is no ETA on it....except "any day now".

I spoke too soon in my last post... the message came back, and so one more trip to the dealer to have the entire shifter assembly replaced...which was done about two days ago. So far, so good... no more "service shifter" message on EVIC... but keeping those fingers crossed for a while.

Had the entire shifter replaced the other day. So far so good. I was contacted by Chrysler customer service in regards to this and they established a case for it. I was also given three years worth of free oil changes for my inconvenience which was a nice gesture on their part. Keeping my fingers crossed. Now, if they can just fix the backup camera stutter and my seat squeal......lol

You're not alone! I just received the service shifter message. Haven't done much about it since I first got it yesterday afternoon. Shops are not open today, afterall it is the 4th of July.
Interesting note though...The second image you can see all the lights on my shifter are on while I am in drive. I have had this issue for a few months now. In fact, I am pretty sure that disabling the seat belt alarm started that issue. But this never triggered the service shifter message on my dash.
Also A month back I went to Jeep to get new software updates to my car and after the fact my back camera as well started having issues. I am reading that they put in a whole new shifter module to "resolve" the issue. But I don't believe they really have a fix. In fact it makes sense that if I do this it will just fail later down the line. I may just have to replace it though because I can not get the message to go away whatsoever.
For those that had it replaced. It is covered under warranty right? and how long did they take on your vehicle to replace the shifter?

Same for me - although it only took the dealer two days to get the part in (full shifter assembly) and then about an hour in the shop to replace (and yes, fully covered under warranty) It's been fine ever since.

Service shifter

I am having this problem with my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, been at the dealer 4 times now and they cannot find the problem. Mine has over 10,000. It's sad that no one can figure out how to fix, mine comes on constantly now. It originally started out on a cold engine and would stop, now it does not stop and is very annoying when driving.

I got this message also. Dealer replaced the shifter under warranty took a few days to get the parts. Still waiting for it to reappear.

You will eventually have to replace the shifter. You can keep the knob but the assembly below is replaced with four bolts. I took mine apart and it is an electronic monster with capacitance contacts which I cleaned and put back together but in a hunch I knew that was not the fix since the tranny knew all along where the shifter position was. There is a ribbon cable from the shifter board up to the knob and I believe that since it flexes with the shifter column, that is the problem since all LEDs on the knob would go out when the message on the dash showed up. My 2012 Charger was just out of warranty with slightly over 37k miles so I bought the part online for $260. Mine would fail every day and since the replacement two months ago all is good.
