I just had this happen on my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude. At the mechanics now and they are not sure if its something they can do. They said they will scan it and see what they come up with.
My main concern is am I going to be okay to drive my jeep regularly or do i need to start shopping for a new vehical? I cant afford a huge bill to fix this. I really wish I had been told or gotten a notification about this.

Service Shifter light came on twice today.. I've been reading up on this and there is significant amount of people who have had issues with this. I heard anywhere that it could cost 7k to fix the problem to parts are on backorder. What is Jeep doing to look into this problem? It doesn't seem to be just a few incident problems. :|
There is no real fix to this problem. FCA doesn't know what is causing the issue. I had my jeep serviced at 3 different dealerships. One said a ground wire was lose on top of transmission, others only cleared the codes and said bring back if it does it again. I complained to FCA and their solution was to document each occurrence with temp, road conditions, etc. They called it an intermittent issue. So at 75 miles hour on 5 lanes heavy traffic, if the jeep shuts off and I get run over and die, I'm suppose to record the event... I sold my 2019 Jeep Cherokee with 13,000 miles on it. I now drive a Subaru Crosstrek...no problems.

Welcome to the forum.
The solution to your problem is TSB 08-054-18 Rev A.
It just replaces the shift bezel and the wiring harness.
My 2014 V6 TH has been working fine since.
If you are referring to @Petrogdon, his was a 2019. TSB 08-054-18 Rev A only applies to 2015-2018 KLs. May have helped your 2014, but it wasn't part of the TSB.

I have a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude (with under 80k miles). Bought brand new in 2015. In 2018, I started having service shifter pop up. It wouldn't never show a code though when taken in to the dealer. Finally in April 2018, the warning stayed on and I took it right to the dealer. They were able to finally get the code. The shifter was replaced at that time, April 2018. Because I had it in so many times to check, they honored my warranty which was up and replaced the shifter free. Fast forward to now. Over the past year, it's randomly been showing service shifter. Again no codes could be seen once the jeep was restarted. Finally today, while in for recall W84, it was throwing the code. In speaking with the service tech, it's the exact same issue as in 2018. However they are telling me that I have to cover the repair cost of $350 (bezel and wiring harness) since the replacement part only had a 2 year warranty. I already contacted jeep via email about this to try and get reimbursed.

Has anyone else had to replace their shifter multiple times like this?

"It just replaces the shift bezel and the wiring harness."

Yup this happened on my wife's 2018 a few months back.
No longer under warranty $100 deductible. Funny part is
they just happen to have the parts in stock...

I am new here but I may have some information to help with this "Service Shifter" problem. I drive a 2016 Cherokee latitude and I have had this problem as well. I have 145,000 miles on it right now but had been doing this soon after purchase. I've noticed that the center console moves around quite a bit. So I have taken a small block of wood and wedged it between the drivers seat and the center console to prevent the wobble. I haven't seen the service shifter notification come on since then which it was around 80k miles at that point. I hope this helps some people with their service shifter issues.

2017 4X4 Latitude. I started it up today and here's what my shift indicator looked like. I drove it right to the Jeep dealer and he said "We looked it over and there's an internal failure of the shifter and jumper." He handed me an estimate for $813.67. He assured me it would drive just fine whether it was fixed or not, and handed me the keys. I started it up and voila! No shifter light malfunction. I told him I'd call him IF I decide to get the work done. Any thoughts?

Basically the shifter (bezel) is fine, the problem is the wiring harness that connects to the shifter.
The harness connector is not securely fastened to the shifter and so it works loose.
Also there may corrosions on the connector contacts.
The solution is to use a wiring harness with a clip that holds it on to the shifter, which requires a new shifter.
And, putting dielectric grease on the the connector contacts to prevent corrosion.

Gear Indicator LIghts All Lit Post #51 Post #62 has the TSB.
Stuck with Shifter Service after recall Post#19 has Flo100 instructions.

My repairs were done under Warranty.

Opening and closing the door corrects the problem until the next time.
It never affected the shifting operation.
When/if the connector actually falls off you will have a problem.

Just bought a 2014 jeep Cherokee limited with 134000 on it.few days again key fob was working on and off..replaced battery.today get to work.put in park shifter service light comes on.turned off vehicle turned back on..hasn't shown up since but something to be worried about..talked to fealer..non have even hear of this problrm..they even called around to other dealers in other cities.I love in canada.but if this is such a huge problem why is there no recall..I spent so much money to buy this vehicle and 3 weeks later I need to spend 1000.. For a problem that many ppl hsve..I'm regretting buying this jeep now.when buying a vehicle you expect..to not have to put money into it for awhile not less than a month later

I've been having this same issue with my early 2015 Latitude. It's gotten to the point that I'm just going to remove the center console; clean and check to make sure everything's tight. If it's missing a harness clip, wouldn't it just be easier to secure it on your own? Seems a bit silly to replace the entire shifter because it needs a retaining clip. I'd think a zip tie or one of the other numerous cable clips we use here at my shop to build automation equipment would be a suitable sub. It's also not that hard to grab a can on contact cleaner and grease to reconnect everything. IDK seems like it's best to try this before dumping $500+ labor on a new shifter.

It's sure worth a try...😎

So I went and took the center console apart over the weekend. I didn't quite yank it all the way out, but I did manage to disconnect and clean all the connections to the shifter and accessories. I used a mild contact cleaner, and dielectric grease when plugging everything back in. I don't want to jinx anything, and I'll try and update one more time in a few weeks. It seems like this may have done the trick. I did a little driving Saturday when I finished with no issues. A trip to the city Sunday with no issues. and to work this morning with no issues. I'm hoping that this fixes it. The only thing I noticed when I pulled everything apart was that the wires going to the little led indicator next to the shifter itself were a little worn, but not broken. I suspect that the clip keeping everything out of the way was rubbing the wires. Luckily they're not worn thru.

I own a 2016 jeep Cherokee. The shifter lights go on about 2 times a week. All I do is turn the jeep off and on again. It seems to work. I was just wondering what I could do to prevent this from happening, and is it ok to drive?
