Service Shifter light came on twice today.. I've been reading up on this and there is significant amount of people who have had issues with this. I heard anywhere that it could cost 7k to fix the problem to parts are on backorder. What is Jeep doing to look into this problem? It doesn't seem to be just a few incident problems. :|

I have been having the same issue. I had received a T-52 recall in the mail to have the Transmission Module Control reprogrammed so I took it in this Tuesday. Still got the "service shifter" error message. Took it back in and they cleared the codes it had been throwing hoping that would take care of it. Didn't work. Today I chatted with Mopar who was able to look up and see that the RRT # 17-118 - 2017 KL Transmission Diagnostic And Shift Enhancement hadn't been completed. Going to try that on Monday and if that doesn't work they said they will need to run a diagnostic. I'll try to update afterwards.

Why would it cost 7K? just wondering.

I just got the service shifter warning for the first time this morning. All the lights next to the gears lit up but the car was still driving ok.
We stopped, shifted into park and back to drive. Everything seems to work and since we were close to home we just drove it slowly home.
But after reading everyone's posts I'm scared to drive it. Do you think it would be ok to drive it the mile or so to the dealer tomorrow morning?

My TH did this and the Jeep dealer finally installed the new new shifter the problem is solved.
Stop the Jeep, put it in Park, turn off the ignition, open the drivers door, close the drivers door and keep going.
The shifter lights will go off and the Jeep will be ok until the next time, there will be a next time.
There is another post here someplace with the new new shifter part number.

It's unfixable. I had the shifter replaced on my 2015 TH and I still get the "service shifter" message occasionally.

My 2015 has given the shifter error a few times over the last few months. It goes away on it's own so it's intermittent. I'm out of warranty so hoping for the best. Assuming it will get worse at some point, is this something a home mechanic can repair?

In my 2014 TH the shifter was finally replaced by PN 6MD102X9-AA and has been working correctly ever since.
PN 1UT662X90AG is superseded by PN 1UT662X90AH and I still got the error message. Neither AG or AH will work.

Definitely take it to the dealer. I took mine in on a Thursday, they diagnosed it quickly, then scheduled it in Friday evening (the part was suppose to arrive on Friday) and I picked it up Saturday morning. Admittedly, the dealer is about 135 miles from where my Cherokee was built (Toledo), so that may have something to do with the part arriving quickly.

Mine was replaced with PN 6MD111X9AB almost 2-1/2 weeks ago and it's been good ever since. About to put 2,600 miles on so that should prove how well it's going to work.

"Replaces: 1UT70HL1AH, 1UT701X9AD, 1UT701X9AE, 1UT701X9AF, 1UT701X9AG, 1UT701X9AH, 6MD111X9AA"

Service ShifterI

I JUST had the last 2 recalls fixed last week having to do with the wrong signal being sent which causes my Jeep to go into neutral/lose power-almost cause crash. Now I am getting the Service Shifter message. Jeep dealership is saying this has nothing to do with the recall??? Then why is this the first time this has come up?

My wife took my 2014 in for an inspection and oil change since I cannot drive right now...receipt came back with "updated BCM, updated TCM" on it...no other verbiage. I'm wondering if they did the V69 or something else, because now, every time we use my vehicle all the shifer lights come on and twice the "Service Shifter" message has been on....
Hi AmberP & SkipW,

I'm sorry to hear that you both are experiencing this concern. If you plan to continue working with your dealers to address this, please let us know via private message. We would be more than happy to provide you with an additional layer of assistance for that process.

Skip W, yes that is exactly what mine is doing now as well. "Service shifter" and all the lights on. I had the S55/NHTSA 16V 529 "repaired" a couple of years ago when I received that recall. Clearly it was not repaired or the fix was not correct and a new recall has been issued for the same problem as the same thing is happening. So I take it in for this "new" recall-immediately after the message comes up for service shifter, all lights on AND now my check engine light and Check Gas Cap is on! I have contacted the NHTSB inquiring what to do when the company/dealer fails to actually correct the recall. This is my 3rd recall in 2 years on this vehicle for the same thing.

we own several of these truck all 2017s, they have all thrown the service shifter and one has had it fixed several times. the deal ler told me that you could continue to drive the car its just an annoyance for it to go off time to time.

I just had this happen on my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude. At the mechanics now and they are not sure if its something they can do. They said they will scan it and see what they come up with.
My main concern is am I going to be okay to drive my jeep regularly or do i need to start shopping for a new vehical? I cant afford a huge bill to fix this. I really wish I had been told or gotten a notification about this.

There is no real fix to this problem. FCA doesn't know what is causing the issue. I had my jeep serviced at 3 different dealerships. One said a ground wire was lose on top of transmission, others only cleared the codes and said bring back if it does it again. I complained to FCA and their solution was to document each occurrence with temp, road conditions, etc. They called it an intermittent issue. So at 75 miles hour on 5 lanes heavy traffic, if the jeep shuts off and I get run over and die, I'm suppose to record the event... I sold my 2019 Jeep Cherokee with 13,000 miles on it. I now drive a Subaru Crosstrek...no problems.

I have a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude (with under 80k miles). Bought brand new in 2015. In 2018, I started having service shifter pop up. It wouldn't never show a code though when taken in to the dealer. Finally in April 2018, the warning stayed on and I took it right to the dealer. They were able to finally get the code. The shifter was replaced at that time, April 2018. Because I had it in so many times to check, they honored my warranty which was up and replaced the shifter free. Fast forward to now. Over the past year, it's randomly been showing service shifter. Again no codes could be seen once the jeep was restarted. Finally today, while in for recall W84, it was throwing the code. In speaking with the service tech, it's the exact same issue as in 2018. However they are telling me that I have to cover the repair cost of $350 (bezel and wiring harness) since the replacement part only had a 2 year warranty. I already contacted jeep via email about this to try and get reimbursed.

Has anyone else had to replace their shifter multiple times like this?

"It just replaces the shift bezel and the wiring harness."

Yup this happened on my wife's 2018 a few months back.
No longer under warranty $100 deductible. Funny part is
they just happen to have the parts in stock...

I am new here but I may have some information to help with this "Service Shifter" problem. I drive a 2016 Cherokee latitude and I have had this problem as well. I have 145,000 miles on it right now but had been doing this soon after purchase. I've noticed that the center console moves around quite a bit. So I have taken a small block of wood and wedged it between the drivers seat and the center console to prevent the wobble. I haven't seen the service shifter notification come on since then which it was around 80k miles at that point. I hope this helps some people with their service shifter issues.

2017 4X4 Latitude. I started it up today and here's what my shift indicator looked like. I drove it right to the Jeep dealer and he said "We looked it over and there's an internal failure of the shifter and jumper." He handed me an estimate for $813.67. He assured me it would drive just fine whether it was fixed or not, and handed me the keys. I started it up and voila! No shifter light malfunction. I told him I'd call him IF I decide to get the work done. Any thoughts?

Basically the shifter (bezel) is fine, the problem is the wiring harness that connects to the shifter.
The harness connector is not securely fastened to the shifter and so it works loose.
Also there may corrosions on the connector contacts.
The solution is to use a wiring harness with a clip that holds it on to the shifter, which requires a new shifter.
And, putting dielectric grease on the the connector contacts to prevent corrosion.

This is the shifter Post:
Gear Indicator LIghts All Lit Post #51 Post #62 has the TSB.
Stuck with Shifter Service after recall Post#19 has Flo100 instructions.

My repairs were done under Warranty.

Opening and closing the door corrects the problem until the next time.
It never affected the shifting operation.
When/if the connector actually falls off you will have a problem.

I own a 2016 jeep Cherokee. The shifter lights go on about 2 times a week. All I do is turn the jeep off and on again. It seems to work. I was just wondering what I could do to prevent this from happening, and is it ok to drive?

@JohnMiller10 yes try cleaning the wire connectors as the previous member mentioned. I did the same to mine a few years back along with adding a tiny amount of dielectric grease and no further service shifter messages. I did not have replace the harness or bezel. Here is a video from a YouTube Mopar technician on the full repair if needed. Shows you the dissembly etc.
