Called Uconnect today to get an answer about album art on SD Card and the conversation expanded to Uconnect SD card recommendations. Bits and pieces of this information are in various threads on this forum and in some cases the source of info is not identified, so I'm putting everything I got from Uconnect today in this one post. These recommendations are for the Uconnect 8.4AN RA4 system; the ones put in the 2014/2015 Cherokee. Don't know what other systems these recommendations cross over to.

Uconnect says they've found the following configuration works best. However, exceeding these recommendations may still work.

Size - 32GB or less with less being better
Class - 2 through 8 with Class 8 being better
Format - FAT32
Brand - Some brands work better than others, but they would not specify which brands work better
Music Content - MP3 or WMA files. No more than 8 folders in root. No more than 255 songs per folder.
Album Art - Embedded JPEG 240 x 158 megapixels
Gracenote (formerly CDDB) - Does not support it

I called Uconnect about album art because while all my tracks have album art embedded, few tracks show it on the Uconnect display. Started to diagnose the SD card/size/class/pixels/files/tags, etc. and read that certain models of 8.4AN were getting album art from Gracenote and people were upset with that because there was no option to prevent it and instead use embedded album art. Uconnect says the 8.4AN RA4 system does NOT use Gracenote, so that's a good thing. I'll continue my diagnosis knowing Gracenote is not getting in the way.

I've been using this for almost a year, no complaints or issues (even though it's a class 10):

Thanks. That is the one I have too and it's been working fine. Buying another SD card is not on my immediate agenda. But most of my album art does not display so I'll make sure they're jpeg and look at number of pixels first. I already comply with FAT32, folder structure and file limits and using MP3 files.

Not meaning to thread jack, but is the average load time 7-10 seconds? Sometimes I insert SD cards with around 200 or so songs and they just don't load. Constant ejecting and re-inserting usually forces it to load, so I think I may have a bad SD port. I've tried 3 different brands of SD cards, though the ones I have been using are micro SD with the SD adapter.

I have both an SD and a microUSB (32 GB each), with a total of about 6,000 songs, and both generally load in the 7-10 s after ignition (I haven't tried to load them separately to see the time). I have had one or two occasions when they took longer to load (almost a minute), but generally there is no issue.

Don't even bother playing music from an SD card anymore , I have it on my phone , Playlists as well , Uconnect plays everything fine , even formats the car won't play , Sometimes when Im on my way home from work (10 min drive ) I just Bluetooth a few songs across instead of radio. If i wanted a lot of music for a road trip etc I would probably buy a Ipod and leave it stashed under the armrest .

Isn't the point of using an SD card to eliminate the hidden ipods in the glove box? :p

I find it easier to have my music stay in the vehicle. I have a Galaxy S3 and I think the bluetooth in it is slowly dying, no matter what song I play through bluetooth it skips. As well, bluetooth is heavily compressed audio, so if you're an audiophile, this would be the last resort.

Yeah I get the art work on the uconnect via the USB port under the armrest , also via Bluetooth .

iPhone 4 through USB under armrest :

Bluetooth :

No art work But lists song /artist

@Kevin@kamloops - Thanks! Tried my Galaxy S5 using USB and all album artwork displays as you demonstrated. Strange it works this way but not straight from the SD card since all my music on the phone is on a micro SD card. Fidelity is good too. Could not get my playlists to work though. Maybe USB sync software will set the playlist directory structure correctly on the phone. Just noticed that Uconnect has separate USB (soft) buttons for each port. It told me to plug in my USB device but it WAS plugged in, then I realized there was another USB button. Trying to figure all this stuff out is like going down a rabbit hole.

Advantage of SD card is it's in there, no wires, and forget about it. Everything works including playlists except may have a restriction on album art pixels. Haven't had a chance to confirm that yet.

Ok, clears that up, I didn't think Bluetooth would send album art.

Yeah I didn't get off the dealers lot and the salesman out of the car before I dropped a USB thumb drive in with the same playlist on my phone , Just kept skipping songs and no album art work , I gave up straight away and just played from my phone , Was so much easier and all the playlists were there and it played the stuff the thumb drive wouldn't play . I have a small music collection and only play a certain amount of songs frequently , This is were the playlist comes in and my 16gb iPhone 4 is more than adequate at the moment. I can see those with a much bigger music collection would struggle though with such small storage on a phone , If it come to that with me I would buy an Ipod .

Solved!!!

Recap: About 90% of my MP3 music tracks with embedded JPEG album art on a Transcend Class 10 32GB SD card formatted FAT32 would not display the album art on the 8.4AN RA4 Uconnect screen. Instead it displayed the disheartening black/white default music note.

Problem: Some music players like the current Uconnect will not display a JPEG if it is too large. Uconnect recommended resizing all JPEGs to 240 x 158 megapixels.

Solution: Found and downloaded free automation that works like a charm. It is a single purpose very easy to use program:

Sanse MP3 Art Sizer

Did not follow Uconnect size recommendation. Instead set the program's Resize Settings to 600 x 600 with 100% quality, and skipping any JPEGs that were already less than 600 x 600. Click the Add Folder button. In my case \Music which included sub folders \artist\album\song. All the songs from each folder/subfolder populate into a list on the screen. Then click the Resize All button. Then go get a Hot Coffee. It progresses through the MP3s at a rate of about 90/minute. For each one, it extracts the current JPEG album art, resizes it if it's larger than the setting, then writes the JPEG back to the MP3.

100% of the MP3s album art now displays.

I'm not adhering to the guidelines >:D

I picked up a 64gb SDXC card a couple of weeks ago...my 32gb won't hold everything. I formatted NTFS and dumped everything I had onto it. It's a bit slow but it works fine so far. When I'm done tinkering I'll post some results.

We use a 64 gb Pny in ours and have not had any problems.
We just use it on shuffle with no search so far, but if you use the search it will take longer as it has twice as much to go through.

SDXC. Same type of card as Malice in the post above.

I've been messing around with different formats for a few days...My 32GB Sandisk Extreme that worked fine for several months just will not work even though it's fine on a PC. My 64GB PNY is having no difficulties other than being slow if you want to "search". My formerly working fine Samsung S3 when in bluetooth mode will no longer display the artist and title, only the device name.

I popped in a 32GB USB 3.0 and it worked fine. Messed around with SD and Bluetooth and now it doesn't work.

I was going to resolve myself to just getting a 64GB micro SD for my phone and live without album art but like I said, now that doesn't even want to work. This thing is random as all **** on what it want's to do on any given day.

See the first post in this thread.

All you have to do is select media and then SD card. No subscription required, if that's what you're asking.

I just dug up an old 8G from one of my cameras and cleaned it off. Then I tossed about 100 M4A songs in a folder and saved the folder to the SD. It works just fine, no pausing, no waiting, excellent sound quality (M4A!). I just copy the AAC (which is I guess m4a anyway) from my itunes folder and I have no problems. I get the artwork also for all but a couple of really old songs.

I just loaded a 64GB usb into my 8.4. Resized all my art to 600x600 (as many of mine were over 1000x1000), sorted by album, etc. The drive has about 54GB full. Initial load time was about 5 minutes. After that, after I start the car, it takes about maybe 10-15 seconds to start playing a song, but about 30 seconds to actually show the album art. And it takes about maybe 30 seconds for the Browse manu to populate all the songs. A little long for 2015 technology, but then again, 54GB is a lot of files to load at once.

Another consideration is memory. Which 8.4 do you have? The RA3 (8.4A) has less memory than the RA4 (8.4AN). My head unit takes about 10-15 seconds to boot up but after that Browse, playing songs and displaying art work are immediate. But I only have about 8GB of music.

I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Overland, with the SD Card reader option. It has been a "nightmare". Original problem was that it randomly repeated songs, and the playlist showed the songs duplicated ass well. I am using a Sandisk 16MB card with a class 10 rating. Also created two folders with no more that 75 songs (MP3) in each.

Problem partially fixed. Very few to no duplications while playing music. However, when viewing the playlist, the first song begins with a numeric count of 100, and not 1.

This only occurs when using the SD Card. When using the USB port next to it, and playing music from a "thumb drive", no problems whatsoever.

I am my wits end and am surmising that the SD Card reader is bad. Any suggestions?

Gave up on mine.... bought a spare iPod on amazon incase mine dies... 100 gig music, not only loads with pictures in a blink of an eye, I did sound comparison using the same source file... the iPod (with eq set flat) sounds noticeably better... one song I tested is an old bob dylan song... sd card... sounds ok, but when played on iPod, I hear sound rolling off the rear pillar speakers... totally absent on sd

Do you use any particular software? Baud rate? Or settings on MP3? I have few song that says format not recognised. So I use a MP3 conversion for all songs and only some of those has sound. Others are like muted. It plays but you can't heard it.
Any recommendation?

I use MusicBee to convert formats and update the music files with album art, lyrics and all the other tags. Includes a lot of automation (i.e. batch processing) to make changes across a large number of music files. It is a phenomenal tool. Sort of like a Swiss Army Knife. But it is a Kludge too. Since its interface does not conform to Windows standards, it took a long time for me to figure it out. To be fair, I had never worked with music files, tagging, music organization, synchronization, playlists, etc. So it took a while for me just to understand the music file management space.

Maybe this software would help you analyze your mp3 files. One thing you could look at is ReplayGain (RG) which is a tag in the music file that can be set to change the volume some players will play the music file at. MusicBee will allow this tag to be inspected, reset, and set.

Sanse Mp3 Art Sizer is another batch processor that will resize the album art in many music files. This is helpful for Uconnect since it will not display album art larger than around 950 x 950.

Both programs are freeware.

Great. The nice thing about the Cherokee too is you could have 2 USB drives and a SD card and Bluetooth and Aux all hooked up and just select the different units from the Media screen.

A little insider knowledge for you and a thank you for answering a question I had. I was wondering about high capacity, high speed cards and several of you said 64GB class 10 will work with NTFS.

The insider knowledge:
- Yes, the system stores an index of media data in an internal SQL database stored in persistent storage
- It was never really tested with art beyond 600 x 600 and re-sizes it down for display down to 200 x 200.
- It doesn't cache the art. It reads it live each time from the source file.
- it's not configured for in folder art, only embedded art.
- It supports MP3, M4A/aac (.m4a extension), and WMA
- It has a limit of 5000 entries in playlist files (.m3u and .pls)

In post #36 I commented about allowing the addition of album art sizes up to 900x900 using Sanse MP3 Art Sizer to resize anything larger than that. The head unit displays them. However, it seems that certain album art is loading slower. Haven't really studied it closely. Sometimes, for a few seconds after a new song starts playing it is still displaying the album art from the previous song. Don't remember it doing that before.

The information you have shared may explain the delay. Since the head unit resizes the art to 200x200 before displaying it, then any album art of a larger size would be a waste of space and processing time.

Thanks for the info.
