I remember those. Guess we are both showing our age. What you are describing is called a 'folded dipole'. They are directional, so not very suitable for mobile use. Reception changes every time you turn a corner.
Ya, remember when GM tried the little copper wire antennas in the windshield??? It worked, but not great...😁😉

Sure do. Owned a couple of Chevy's back then with that 'feature'. They were directional in that signals hitting the antenna 'broadside' came in strong, but along the axis, not so much. For a little while, it was a bonanza for GM because you could only get a replacement windshield from them, until the other glass makers caught-up.

no but I did just have an awesome Bloody Mary. sure hope no one wants anything from me for a while
Well, I guess it's 2:00 somewhere...LOL!!!😁😉

OK I'm up from my nap & moved some furniture

drove around a little bit earlier & that sketchy station came in better. I'll give it some time but probably keep it for now
So, are you saying the reception is worse with the Stubby than the OEM type antenna, or what???🤔🫤

fwiw- Daughter's 2017 Corolla has no visible radio antenna. nuthin

although I did not look at the front & rear windows for wires in the glass
My 2005 Mazdaspeed 6 also has no visible antenna sticking out anywhere... I believe it is actually built into the rear window with the demister...

Never had any issues with radio reception.

Cheers.

2014 Trailhawk here. My cover comes off completely, hasn't disintegrated yet. Antenna not damaged - still works. On the flip side, the antenna has welded itself into the mount. Can't get it to unscrew at all anymore, even using pliers. Not a big deal normally but is a pain when trying to load my canoe onto my Yakima roof rack.

Hey @rumrunner, that's a pretty clever DIY fix for the antenna using a screw and a cap! What gave you the idea to make your own instead of buying one? I bet other members looking for a similar low-cost mod would be interested to hear more.
no worries, let me get that for you

that was actually another forum member, who, instead of replacing his antenna, used a generic screw, which seemed to suffice for his needs. the plastic red cap appears to be for cosmetic reasons

was getting used to the new short antenna

performance was fine for most of my usual stations, even the sketchy one came in better as I drove in some areas. but it was bugging me to have worse reception, especially since that sketchy station was from a Boston college where our Son used to broadcast his shows

giving this one a try & the sketchy station came in clear as soon as I tried it from our parking spot at home (y)

seems to fit more tightly too
