was waxing the Cherokee & must have tapped the antenna & a cpl pieces of the black plastic covering just fell off! I guess the plastic just dried out, a lot!

didn't take much effort to peel off the rest, w/ pliers

inadvertently broke the coil in a cpl spots, so it's toast

poked around the forums & a few ppl suggested a CravenSpeed Stubby Antenna so we'll give that a go when it arrives later today or tonight
side note:
before removing it, I was gonna try a temporary fix with this liquid electrical tape stuff, but what was left had dried out. it was a decade old maybe more. used it a lot, for lots of projects. good stuff. I'll get more from Harbor Freight Sunday, after work. 2 local hardware stores were sold out, except for 1 jar of red. hmmm, no thanks, black is more versatile
if you've never used it, it's thick & gooey, not like paint & it takes a full day to dry. there are other similar products out there, maybe they are easier to use & dry faster?
