update: driving further from Boston, this other new unit is working very well & pulls in the college station very well, even further from Boston than our home (y)
I guess we're just lucky around here, all of our TV and radio transmitters are on top of mountains. I can head west and pick up our terrestrial radio stations 100 miles into Nevada...Get Sirius, and you'll never lose your stations, unless you're in a tunnel or something...😁😉

I hate that the second car wash I brought my Jeep through broke off the factory antenna housing. (The first time I went through a car wash I unscrewed the antenna since it seems to stick out like a sore thumb.) Thankfully? I was listening to the radio and noticed the stereo reception disappear. I was able to ask the attendant to retrieve the housing and antenna. I considered replacing with a shark fin previously listed in this thread, but the cost and tearing apart my headliner seemed like a task I wasn't ready to jump into. I opted to super glue the housing back onto the broken screw mounts and avoid automated car washes (unless I remove the antenna) and it's held for a couple months now. I did replace the factory antenna with a 3.2 inch from Amazon and get good reception. I might consider upgrading to the 8" rubber antenna listed in this thread but I just can't see how it's car wash proof if it's still sticking up eight inches. Does anyone have a performance review of the shark fin?

Its more on the pricy side but ive been thinking about getting an aftermarket "Shark fin" for my antenna.

I use touchless or self serve car washes mostly & can unscrew it if I want to

thank you for that photo that is really interesting. is the housing tightened from underneath & inside the cargo area?

Hmmm...I have run mine through an automated car wash (with the roller brushes) at least once a week for years now, and never had a problem, even before I replaced the OEM antenna with the Cravenspeed Stubby...😳🤔🫤

maybe it's UV degradation? you have a garage, right? mine has been out in the sun for 11 years & the covering kinda just disintegrated

here's that state of the art antenna connection in the old living room, circa 1966. it leads to the attic. I forget if there's another connector up there, I think so. recovering from heat exhaustion, so I'm not going up there right now

No, the Trailhawk has always lived outside in the driveway. Garages are all full...🤔🫤😁

Ahhh, the old "twin lead". Often paired with either a roof, attic or even rabbit ears antenna. Yup, and we marveled at it back then!

fwiw- Daughter's 2017 Corolla has no visible radio antenna. nuthin

although I did not look at the front & rear windows for wires in the glass
Yes. My dad's 2015 Camry has the antenna in the rear window. It's similar to the old school antennas built into the glass but a totally different design. More complex in configuration and appears to be integral to and using the rear window defogger at least for the AM band. The radio reception is some of the best I have ever seen, especially on AM. But then again the receiver is not a Uconnect. AFAIK Pioneer still makes them for Toyota (Pioneer always seems to have sensitive receiver quality). Direction you're driving doesn't seem to effect the reception very much. I'm not sure how that's possible .
