Jacking up front end.

Searching the forum gave me enough answers to what I want to do. Namely, jack up the front end only, then place jack stands on the forward jack points.
I intend to place a 4" x 4" (or 2" x 4" ) across the skid plate and jack up at it's midpoint. Is that acceptable ?

I have jacked off all sorts of things with mine. Used the hi lift on the front tow hooks (wouldn't recommend), jacked off the sliders (make sure parking brake is on and the jack is perfectly straight), floor jack under the lower control arms (make sure it doesn't slide), etc. I put jack stands under the main part of the sliders on the side I'm working with, or both sides if both front tires are coming off. Just depends on what you want to do. From a strength standpoint, using a 2x4 and floor jack under the middle of the skid plate is probably fine. From a safety point, don't get under it with only one lift point in the center. It can fall off to either side quite easily. You really want it sitting on at least two jack stands if you plan to lift the entire front and climb under it, or work anywhere you might could get pinned.

I would always use jack stands. Always .... on every 4 wheeled vehicle I've ever owned. Either that or ramps, which in this case would make the work impossible as I have to remove the wheels.
Thank you both for the replies.

+ 1 on the chocks. Already have them on hand.
I'm removing the wheels to gain easier access to the fog lamps. Having both wheels off together just seemed an easier way -- for me anyway.
Mark, I'm ordering the Xprite LED's you gave me the link to.

I replaced the fogs on my wife's 2018 twice. No need to remove the wheels,
it's just extra work. 0.02

If you're wanting the use the Jeep's jack, I would invest in a hydraulic floor jack to make things a bit simpler or quicker.
Regardless, I would jack up one corner at a time, the Jeep and you aren't worth the risks (no matter how slim).
But I see nothing wrong with having both sides up on jack stands at the same time, parking brake on, rears chocked...

Sounds like you’re on the right track! Using a 4" x 4" across the skid plate to jack up at the midpoint should be okay, but just make sure it’s positioned evenly to avoid stressing any part of the frame. I’ve used similar methods in the past, but I always double-check that the weight is distributed properly before I start working.

I used to do this kind of work with a regular floor jack and stands, but I eventually upgraded to a scissor lift from astrolift.co.nz, and it’s made things a lot easier and safer. It gives me more control, especially when lifting the car just from one side or the front.
