i don’t know i’ve been having the exact same problem that everyone is having with their jeep i just got this car i’ve never own a jeep in my life and i don’t know anything about cars and since i took a road trip i my battery is getting really hot and it’s not smoking it’s like steaming from a little plastic elbow that comes off the battery that looks like a hose is supposed to be on it but there isn’t one
As @Gary Kline asked, a picture of this would be great.

What is your Jeep model, model year and engine ? And mileage ?

Well, apparently it's not an AGM battery...🤔😎
Our flooded and AGMs (Northstar and Johnson Controls) have a vent hole on the negative terminal side, but there is no elbow/fitting for a tube. However I remember seeing vids of JCs with their batteries under the passenger seat and they have vent tubes on them, both of them.

this is the battery it’s a 2015 Jeep cherokee trailhawk V6 and it’s saying i need an oil change and i have one scheduled for tuesday but now my car isn’t starting even with a jump. Everything started last week when i took a trip to bradenton than my battery started dying and getting hot and steaming than it was going into battery saver mode and it caused the volume button and other buttons under the screen to shut off due to battery saver mode and i tested the battery and alternator the battery came up with a code F04 ( which meant that code was saying the battery stops excepting a charge after being charged for 18+ hrs) but the alternator was fine. and after that the battery started to get hot and the little thing on the right side started steaming. and Now my car isn’t starting i’m going to put oil in it to see if that’s the problem but the battery voltage once i get it started stays at 13.6-13.7 which it should be at but i don’t understand why i’m having so much trouble i just got the car the first week of april of this year !

i am also a doordasher so i drive a lot daily which probably is why it started issues but i just want to fix the problem this is my only means of transportation at the moment .
Thanks for the pics and details :)

Did you buy that battery from Autozone yourself ? They come with a 3-year replacement warranty so maybe it's still covered ?
Yeah your battery is toast, you need a new one. Now if the current one is still under warranty, get Autozone to replace it. If it's no longer under warranty, then... you have 2 options :
1) Get the same battery but cheaper at Walmart : the Duralast Platinum (Autozone) sells for $250 while the Walmart Everstart Platinum H7 AGM sells for $180. They are identical. Plus the Walmart battery has a 4-year replacement warranty...

2) If you plan on keeping this Jeep at least 3 more years, you could go for a premium AGM battery like the X2 Power at Batteries+. It is much more expensive though, at $350.

Ok wait a second... just realized something.

That Duralast Platinum battery you have in your 2015 right now is the wrong battery for your Jeep. It is NOT an AGM battery, and it should be. Autozone sells two different Duralast Platinum batteries : one is AGM (that one has double-facing handles on top of the battery, like the Walmart battery I linked to in my previous post) and the one you have, which is a flooded battery (they call it EFB for 'inhanced flooded battery') :

You need an AGM battery for your 2015 because it has engine Stop/Start. The Autozone battery fitment guide got it wrong (we've seen this before).
If you make a good case, they should provide you with a new AGM Platinum even if the current one is no longer under warranty, because they messed up on this one.

Edit to add. This is the Duralast Platinum designed for your 2015 V6 (same as the Walmart battery) :

Just to comment on the overheating and venting of your battery : a Cherokee generates a lot of heat under the hood, because of poor ventilation in there, and the battery sits close to the engine, gets no ventilation so it gets hot. Because you Doordash, you generate a lot of engine heat for long periods of time. An AGM battery has solidified electrolyte (which is a mix of sulfuric acid and water), and because it is solidified it will not boil, so no (or very little) venting. Your flooded battery, on the other hand, can and will boil over when it gets really hot under the hood, so what you saw was real.

Because you Doordash, you really, really... need an AGM battery, the solidified electrolyte is a must for you.

If you have problems with Autozone on the claim, let them read these forum posts. They need to make this right for you.

That's what I was getting ready to say Mark...😉😎

Can anyone tell from the photo... it looks to me like the IBS isn't plugged in. Is it just the angle in the photo?
Sure looks unplugged to me too...😳🤔😎

I had to just go look at mine, and I think it's plugged in but yes, hard to tell from the pictures...😉😎

Great catch Gary. It isn't plugged in. I zoomed in on the picture and can confirm. I even compared with online pictures of the sensor alone then of connected sensors.

@rayneee.907 : whoever installed that Duralast EFB battery not only installed the wrong battery, but they forgot to reconnect the battery sensor. If you look behind the battery near the negative (black) connector, you should find a cable there with a connector.

If you look at the picture you posted, then compare with the sensor I'm linking to below, you'll notice yours looks exactly the same, meaning there is no cable attached to the connector. I'm also attaching a picture (not so great) of my 2015 V6's battery with the sensor and cable connected to it.

Mine (old original battery), with the cable connected to the sensor :

Edited to pivot my picture for an easier view.

Now for @rayneee.907 , this unplugged sensor doesn't change the fact that the battery is dead... just wanted to make that clear. An unplugged IBS (intelligent battery sensor) will not prevent the Jeep from starting or running.

Late edit (again) : and just to point out that @rayneee.907's negative battery connector is installed pivoted clockwise, so plugging in the cable would not be possible without pivoting it slightly back, to allow a connection.

I saw "Duralast" on the battery and that told me everything I needed to know. ;) This story is starting to tell itself...

the battery came with the vehicle i have a warranty through the dealership so i’m going to take it in tuesday thank you guys so much y’all have all been a huge help
Good stuff. Make sure to let them know that the battery is the wrong type for your 2015 with Stop/Start, and also that the intelligent battery sensor is disconnected.
