Upgrading UConnect to Apple CarPlay

Hello everyone,

I have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and I'm in the process of changing out my UConnect system with that of a 2019 Cherokee that has Apple CarPlay. Just wondering if I could get some help troubleshooting my issues. I'll start by listing some of the hardware I'm using.

  • 68297446AI Uconnect 8.4 VP2 from a 2019 Cherokee that has NO Nav and has NO Premium Sound
  • HVAC Module from a different 2019 Cherokee with dual zone
  • OBDLink EX
  • AlfaOBD on Windows
  • USB Hub from a 2019 Jeep Cherokee that I got from the center armrest. I didn't feel like tinkering too much with the one above the shifter so I figured this would work and then I would use a wireless adapter for the CarPlay.

I've also attached the window sticker for my vehicle, 2017 Cherokee, and the donor vehicle, 2019 Cherokee.

My main issue is that the proxy alignment completes, but I continue to get the following error:
Writing configuration to Entertainment Telematic Module (LTM/ETM/HTM)...Failed. The ECU has detected that the request contains parameter(s) with value(s) outside allowable range.

Having said this there are a few things that are not working because of that:
  • There is no sound.
  • Cooled seats or not an option on the new screen. They turn on sometimes when the car is to warm as part of the auto on comfort I think.
  • Temp is stuck on Celsius on new screen and won't allow me to switch to F.
  • CarPlay doesn't work
I'm sure most of these will work once the ECU aligns, but I thought I'd list them. I'm thinking there meet be some problem with the fact that my vehicle has the premium sound with the subwoofer where as the previous vehicle had the basic sound system.

The first thing I did when I set everything up was to backup the Proxy settings. Then I went in and changed some things that I've read would or could make a difference. You can find those changes on the JEEP PROXY LOG PDF I've attached below. In the PDF you will see some of the things that I've tried or am wanting to try to get the ECU to align with the Body Computer. The main ones I want to try are:
  • Radio Type (currently at type 4, but now I have no NAV so not sure about this)
  • Audio Speaker Configuration (there are about 10 options and not sure where to start with this to tinker)
  • Acoustic Configuration (Currently: KL(Cherokee) - Premium Amplified)
  • Audio Brand (Currently: No Audio Brand)

If someone could read through the PROXY Log and give me some tips as to some things to try to get sound back and to complete the ECU alignment, that would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to continue playing with things to see if I can get this to work.

Thank you!

Hi @15jimenjos,

Full disclosure, I've not done an upgrade from my 2014 TH uConnect 8.4 to the 2019+ CP/AA version (I upgraded to the T'EYES CC3 Android unit) however I did recently do a non-2019+ upgrade from 4" uConnect without NAV to an 8.4 non-NAV unit and the Radio Type setting needed to be at Type 3 (I think Type 4 is the NAV unit).

  • First thing #1: GREAT you're in the habit of making a backup. Do that before each change. Kudos! Also, since you have a 2019+, you're using the Security Gateway Bypass cable, correct? (else none of your settings should be writing. In fact, I don't think you could even do a proxi align w/o it)
  • Next (#2), Is there no sound or when you turn the volume knob, do you see the on-screen volume indicator move but the actual sound from the unit doesn't change? If so, first thing I'd do is let your Cherokee sit over night and then try again tomorrow. Many settings for the radio are stored in the body computer (like your heated/vented seats) and the unit must go to full "sleep mode" before everything works so I'd check everything in the morning.
  • Next thing (#3), I'm not sure you can keep the old media hub in there and not get an error. It sounds like right now you have 2 media hubs, the old one above the shifter and the new one you're keeping in the center arm rest daisy chained from the first hub. Is this correct? Did you connect 2 media hubs? If so, of course you could be getting an error just from that. I'd fix that or shut if off (see below in AlfaOBD). For testing purposes, plug the new hub directly into the back of the new uConnect.
  • Also, make sure you have the audio type (standard ("Base") 6 speaker or Premium, 9 speaker, correct)
These are just a few places I'd start. Again though, wait until the car sleeps (and you too!) Then tackle in the morning and see if not working still and then just address those items.

Perhaps someone with a 2019+ and AlfaOBD can confirm what the external media ports configuration should be?

Thanks for the response Gary Kline.

1- My vehicle is the 2017 Cherokee.

2- When I turn the volume knob the indicator on the screen moves, but I get no sound. I will let it sleep as you recommend.

3- For the USB Hub, I'm not a big fan of having a bunch of wires laying around so I found out that for a 2019 Cherokee you can connect to the single usb slot that is in the center armrest storage for CarPlay. I figured it wouldn't be much different if I replace this instead of the one above the shifter. The problem I ran into is that my original usb slot in the armrest storage area was hardwired into the hub in the armrest. So what I did is I ordered a double sided USB mini cable that would connect the new usb slot from a 2019 jeep to the other end of the connection. The media hub above the shifter has two USB Mini connections on the back of it. One comes from the Uconnect and the other runs under the shifter to inside the armrest where the other usb is in my vehicle. I took apart the shifter and center console area and ran the new wire from new hub in the armrest to the media hub above the shifter. The wire is actually long enough to reach the connection all the way up to behind the screen with a little bit of feeding it through, but I'll only try this out if I can get some of the other things sorted out. Hopefully I don't have to and the CarPlay works like this. The new armrest hub I got from a 2019 has been working perfectly to charge my phone and even pops up as iPhone when I switch to media.

Also I did change to the Radio Type 3 and will let it simmer overnight along with the other changes I had already made. Fingers crossed!

Thanks a lot for the response!

No problem. Re: #2 above, it still sounds like the stock daisy-chain. Maybe I'm misreading what you wrote. Stock, a mini USB plugs into the back of the radio (gray connector) down to the Media Hub (above the shifter) and then runs from there to the center console port. Are you saying you found a long USB wire and got a 2019+ media hub and wired direct to the gray connector on the uConnect radio? (so the original media hub and its wire are still there but just not plugged into anything.)
Sorry. I misunderstood the daisy chain thing, but it sounds like that is what I did. I could plug in direct and let the other one hang as I don’t ever use that hub anyway, but I’ve left it as the daisy chain deal you mentioned.
So you think I do have to replace the one above the shifter still?
I just figured CarPlay wasn’t working yet since the ECU was still failing during the Proxy Alignment.
