Rear drive shaft play

Hi,
I went under my Jeep just to do some inspection. I shook and tapped the drive shaft. In the back and in the middle parts it was firm but the front part was shaking and clicking metal sound when I tapped it.
I am not sure about noise when driving - there is a little rattle noise that was always there since I bought the Jeep and it always sounded to me like it comes from the front of the drive shaft, so maybe it is that (or maybe other thing..).

what do you think, is it a problem in the drive shaft or maybe it is in the transfer?
Do I need to fix it (now?), or is it an acceptable wear?
Thanks

There is a little play on the front part of the shaft that goes into the PTU. This is normal. Truthfully, unless you see grease flung out (there's a rubber boot on that front section), it's very hard to damage it. I hightly doubt it's an issue. Almost always drive shaft noise is coming from the two carrier bearings. Dust/water/environment eventually gets into the bearing (or when you look at them they have a rubber 'donut' around them which in some cases can tear from age).

The only way to be certain if a noise is coming from the driveshaft is to take the drive shaft off and then go for a drive. If the noise is gone, replace the driveshaft. If the noise remains, put the driveshaft back on and look elsewhere for the noise.
Thanks! The drive shaft is clean, there is no grease coming out, and there is no significant noise (just a little noise I suspected). I think I will leave it for now and go on with the other projects I have on the Jeep.

I don't know if it helps, but you can see your current status with AlfaObd, you can drive connected and press read results every time you want to know (when you hear a noise maybe).
For example, one thing I s.aw (it was when the street was wet, not sure if it is always like that) is that when it goes to 4wd, it stays there for some time, minuts and more, until it returns to 2wd.

This is 4wd:

This ls 2wd:

And there is also 4low

Just another take on this is if you select the "Monitor parameters" checkbox, you do not need to manually refresh the screen. It will show you in real-time as you drive the 2WD/4WD mode plus what gear your transmission is in also.

Under the drive train controller module (DTCM) screen, select "Monitor Parameters" and then "Add/Remove" to select Bussed Input Gear and AWD System Status.

  • You'll see the transmission switching gears (1-9) in real-time under Actual Gear as well as the 2WD/4WD status, Mode (SNOW, SPORT, SAND/MUD, ROCK etc.) and parameters (4Hi/4Lo/eLocker status if a TH)

Hey @Gary Kline , thanks, I didn't know this monitor parameters option.
Also, not much related, but where do I see in AlfaObd the "general" faults? (the faults that I see in inCarDoc diagnostic). I know how to get to each module faults in AlfaObd but couldn't find these.
