I changed the battery in my 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee and now it wont go past 50 miles per hr...do I need to have a car reset? Or the battery reset?

Try checking the Grand Cherokee forum, maybe there is something there.
Check the battery voltage on EVIC with the engine not running and the ignition ON.
Should be over 12 volts. Turn on the headlights and other high current loads to see if the battery voltage stays above 12 volts.
Put a good battery charger on the battery overnight.
Changing the battery should not be an issue. Make sure it is the correct battery type and check the battery cable connections.
Do you have an IBS?
Have the new battery checked, maybe it was defective.
If there are no codes there should not be anything to reset.
I let my Jeep dealer replace my battery with the battery I provide.
Then if they mess up the installation they can fix it.
Let us know what you find and maybe we can provide more help.

Yes, the OP is asking his question in the wrong forum, this is for the entirely different Jeep Cherokee. He should try here: Grand Cherokee - WK2 -

That said, the battery doesn‘t directly control the vehicle’s speed. It sounds like he is in a limp mode. Again, try asking in the Grand Cherokee forums.

Which one did they sell you? If the Grands are anything like our KL's, you can't skimp on the batteries on these things. I just had one replaced under warranty on mine after only 14 months of service. You have to have maximum, consistent power on these modern vehicles, and the bargain batteries just don't cut it...

Ya, I saw that you posted while I was asking. I'm going to wait for @Mark_ to chime in, but that's a standard, non AGM unit I think, and I don't think that's the one you need.

That's the wrong battery!!! Your 2016 GC V6 calls for a group 49 AGM!!! 94R is what we have in our KL's. I didn't think they were the same. You need at least one of these.$229.95 at Batteries +.

Ok great...thank you so much for helping me out
I think the dude at O'Reilly's pulled up Cherokee, instead of Grand Cherokee!!! Please don't tell me that they also installed the wrong battery as well, I've already about lost all hope in humanity!!! LOL!!!🤔
I think he did too lol cause they said they're gonna give me the correct battery for the same price I paid for the wrong one
Sorry for the late reply. Yeah that group 65 battery is all wrong. Not sure what they're doing at Oreilly's...

Do you have the 3.6L or the V8 ?

If I'm reading this right, the 3.6L requires a group 94R AGM (just like ours in Cherokees) and the V8s require the bigger group 49 AGM.

They need to make this right. And make sure they sell you an AGM.
Its definitely a 3.6L and yes they're gonna make it righy

I saw that too! But, since it's pulling off their website, it looks like the buyer put in Cherokee on the search instead of Grand Cherokee. That's a user search, not a shop search.
PICNIC...

Ya, I just went to O'Reilly's website, put in 2016 GC V6, and what's the first thing to come up, AGM Super Start PLATINUM, but when you scroll down to the "Best Fit", it's this one, AGM Super Start PLATINUM 49. If they are going the O'Reilly's route, then this is the one. If it were me, I'm spending a few bucks more for a Northstar or an X2, but that's just me

Agreed, not a GC expert, but logic dictates that a battery that differs only in length (the 94R being shorter), the 94R will fit in the space of the 49, but not the other way around. :geek:
I've been burnt too many times on the value batteries, some not even lasting a year, sure they were still under warranty, but c'mon...

The Grand Cherokee doesn't use the same battery as the Cherokee.

I had a 2017 JGC Limited with the 3.6L and ESS.

The OEM battery is a Lead Acid Battery, and the ESS battery is under the driver seat and its a motorcycle battery.

What is causing your issue is using the incorrect battery for the Cherokee and it not playing nice with the ESS system, throwing all kinds of things into "I don't have the inputs I'm expecting so I'm going to do nothing" routine.

You need to get the correct battery for your JGC and hook it up after leaving the cables unhooked from the battery for 10 minutes.

This should force everything to reboot and it will take care of the 50 mph problem. If it doesn't you have damaged something and need to take it to the dealer.

Hmm. I consulted 3 auto parts fitment guides (well, 2 auto parts and Batteries Plus Bulbs) and they all pointed to a group 49 AGM for a 3.6L 2017 GC.

Which battery did you have in yours ? O'reilly's choice for the OP, originally, was a wet group 65.
I honestly have a hard time processing how a car manufacturer can fit a wet battery under a seat, inside the cabin, with the spill hazard and gassing... I know they have vent tubes on them, but still...

The OP could go to moparonlineparts.com, enter his VIN and see what the correct batteries are.
At least with the Mopar part numbers we could figure out what the batteries really are.
There should be a parts drawing showing the locations.
I don't know anything about the GC.
Seems to me the GC forum would be the best bet for battery information, at least they know something about their own vehicles.

That group 400 is the one under the seat. It's basically an AGM motorcycle battery. The 49 is just an inch wider than a 94R. So now, I just looked at my neighbors 18 GC V6 Overland, and his has got the 49, so apparently, either one would work for the GC, but you're definitely not fitting the 49 in the KL...

You think under the seat is bad? On my '06 Sebring, you had to jack up the driver's front, remove the wheel, unscrew a panel in the front well to get at the battery hold-down...
