Got a few things installed the other day on my rack.

1) Baja Racks 3" Hi-Lift mount

I like the look and finish of this mount much better than GOBI's but the problem is it's got two bolts side by side which isn't fully compatible with the existing spaces on the rack to install. Took my Dremel and removed two bits from the mesh and the mount fits perfect.

They do have a few other 3" mounts for MaxTraxs and awning which I'm considering.

2) Front Runner's Jerry Can holder which fit Wavian (NATO-style) cans.

Thought long and hard about Rotopax, but they are smaller, "plastic", and more expensive for the same amount of liquid. Plus Jerry Cans just look cool.

If there is another one. July's doesn't even have a poll up yet. :frown:

My fiancee ordered me a Stealth Gobi from Trail Duty this weekend. For my free accessory, I went with the GOBI Hi Lift mount. That said, I do really like the look of your Baja option.

I have no (current) need for the Jerry cans, but those are rugged, and badass looking. Great set up.

Yeah, it was about 4ish weeks to actually ship + the time the delivery company took to arrive here in LA and me to arrange a delivery date. So that ended up over 6 weeks in total

How are the mounts on the roof? Did it kink the sheet metal at all like the RRO bars do? And wind noise? I am really torn between what you have, the RinoRack that I put a thread up about or just getting some bars. I will get one, but do not want two different ones. Also, how is the powder coating holding up?

I am loving what you have going on!

No kinks in the roof that I can see at all. The rack + lights added the most noise, but honestly it's not bad at all especially considering how quiet the Cherokee is by itself. The Yakima bars + wind deflector I had on my Audi was much louder than everything I have on the GOBI now. Adding a Pelican in the front does add more noise, but moving it to the back helped a lot.

Used my lights a lot this past weekend, by the time we got to the dirt road to our camp ground it was pitch black. Drove about 20+ minutes down a logging road and felt very comfortable with the wide (flood) lights on. Didn't seem to need the spots. Then at camp used the rear diffused for setting up at tent and getting organized. Couldn't be happier with my light setup.

As for the jerry cans.... I realized carrying 40 litres was a huge plus not just the convenience and security of extra fuel, but saves a ton because I can buy extra when I find a good price on fuel. Truth be told, 5 gallon jerry cans take about 5+ minutes to empty and they get very heavy holding them while filling up.

Latest addition to my GOBI is a set of MaxTrax. Yeah, they are stupidly expensive, about $120-$150 more than other options, but then no one has complained about the quality or ability of these meticulously engineered plastic treads. Got mine in red to match my jerry cans and Hi-Lift.

For now they'll just be fashioned to the rack via bungie or something until I figure out exactly where I'll put them and what mount will work at that time. But these are in the running, but pricy.

BTW, purchased from www.maxtraxamerica.com and got them in 2 days.

Thanks...now I want a set of OD ones with the Multicam sack. This Site is going to make me straight broke.

Looking good. One of the things I opted to purchase in place of the Gobi at this time was a chain saw. I have wanted one for quite a while for some light trail work and emergency cleanup. Stihl MS170. As my first saw, I wanted something that was good to learn with, yet get the job done.

Where is your chain saw in your gear?

Oh, I've thought about the chainsaw thing, but went with an axe for day-to-day cutting. Though not just any axe, this Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe is the sh*t. I'll get a felling axe soon enough and maybe a chainsaw when I settle on a new home(sted).

Baja Rack finally updated their site, actually includes a KL rack. Thought I'd share some of the accessory mounts they have that would work (with some adaption) to the GOBI Stealth Rack (3"). Visit the site for a selection of "flat" mounts as well!

Light Mount

Maxtrax

Axe + Shovel Would require mod as I did above

Hi-Lift

Didn't want to start an new Gobi thread so I figure I'd throw this here ...

Bought some of these Silicon Pipe Couplers when researching things I can do for my wind fairing project. Was thinking of some protection for the rack if I wanted to rest the fairing directly on the front and ordered up some of these. Probably won’t be using them for my fairing install but will be using them to help protect the rack when strapping things on to it.

They are flexible and easily cut with a utility knife. With the 1” inside diameter they fit perfectly over the rack and you can place them anywhere you would need to hook onto the rack. May even use them underneath other fastening devices like an axe/shovel mount to help protect the rack. I linked to the red but they also come in Black and Blue in other ebay listing.

Rotopax on GOBI

Following along rojstock's idea of making this a common Gobi accessories thread, I'm adding this... my install of Rotopax gas cans on the GOBI Stealth rack.

As DZ points out in his original post in this thread, Rotopax is a very pricey solution for carrying extra fuel compared to jerry cans. But it offers the main thing I was looking for... keeping things low profile on the roof (which I wanted for a variety of reasons). Also, their "system" provides quite a bit of flexibility in storage options. And lastly, the Rotopax products have an excellent reputation for high quality and I would concur now that I have my hands on them.

http://home.rotopax.com/index.php/about-rotopax

I got ideas and instructions from here:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/94578-okkis-build-thread-4.html#post1065652

The install was kind of a PITA. I ended up having to remove some of the rack's mesh floor to get a couple of bolts in the right place for one of the mounts. And without loosening up/removing the rack, bolting those mounts down is pretty challenging because you have to squeeze your arms/hands/tools between the rack and roof and must do some of the work one handed from below the rack/mount. Nimble fingers and patience is key!

Overall, I am quite happy with how it all came out.

These are 2 - 2 gallon packs linked together on the locking mounts.

Dang. I keep juggling the idea of selling off my rack because I don't want to deal with the potential mounting stud issues... but you make the rack look so darned sexy and useful.

sorry man! and I'm just getting going.... >:D

know what you mean about the studs... knocking on wood here... but also why didnt want to touch the rack itself to do the install stuff...

Great stuff @monkeyboy! Any chance you got a pic without the containers mounted that shows where you needed to cutaway the mesh floor? Also, can you add another 2 2-gallon containers on top of those and use the same mounts you've already installed or would you have to use something different for that? Looks Great!

And @RegalTraveler, you just got to do it. It's like worrying about your Transmission going out on you. If you live like that you'd never leave the house. :)

Thanks!

I don't have a shot of that... but... I plan to do some touch up paint work on those spots hopefully this weekend and could try to get a photo. As is, you can't really see it very well even without the cans as the 2 mount plates (~5" diameter) that "sandwich" the mesh hide it.

Yes... you can add more of the same size cans (or smaller) on top of the existing but it requires purchasing an extension to the mount (so the pedestal part stands higher).

I may consider doing that at some point. Also may consider another mount up front like for H20 or more gas (and put the water on the back).

@RojStock, I plan on getting my car detailed/sealed before I put the rack on. I know that once that rack goes on it's never getting sealed or waxed up top ever again.

I too waxed the top before installing the rack. :)
Very small space to get at the roof once it is installed like you say.

Here is what I did ....

1. Bought a 48”x3.5”x1.4” piece of Hobby Board from HD. (That’s what they call it)
2. Cut out a handle on one end using a hole saw.
3. Covered the board from the handle to the opposite end with felt so I don’t accidentally scratch the roof. Tried using glue at first and that wasn’t holding to well so I just Duct Taped the seam and will make that the top when I’m using it. :)
4. Put a wash mitt on the end.

Can wash with the one side of the mitt and apply spray wax with the other. (I actually bought 2 of those mitts and one is a wash mitt and the other a wax mitt.) Also can throw a drying towel on the end to dry the roof after washing and before waxing.

Used it once and it seemed to work fine.

Simple Shovel mount

Here's a pretty simple little accessory carrier I put together for my Gobi. This could be used on any kind of rack to carry a shovel or axe or....

Used some unused Yakima accessory mount clips I had laying around and a pair of Quick Fist clamps ($11). I had to drill out the existing holes on those clamps to accommodate the bigger Yakima bolt. And had to add a little padding to the Yakima mount to fit the smaller (1") Gobi tubes.

2) Front Runner's Jerry Can holder which fit Wavian (NATO-style) cans.
...
Hey DZ, how far back did you go with the Front Runner Jerry Can Holder? I can't tell from your picture if you went all the way back to the back crossbar or did you stop where the mesh flooring ends 4 inches or so before that?

Got my Front Runner holder and Jerry Cans in route now.
And yes, basically I'm copying you but I could put the cans on the passenger side or turn them 90 degrees. :)

I also might be going the BajaRack route for the Hi-Lift Brackets as well but not sure yet. I can't believe the price of those things, no matter which vendor. There's got to be some collusion going on. lol

Have been thinking of making something myself but then I remember that I really don't have those kind of skills.

(Hope you're having fun in Colorado!)

Edit> Nevermind @DZOnline ... Just saw a pic you have on your blog that shows this pretty well, and you moved yours to the passenger side. :)

I have the removable crossbars so our racks are slightly different. Will probably try a few places before settling on a location.
