Glass Paint (chalk) Residue Removal?

Hello,

I have a strange one for all of you...

I was married this past July and we wrote on the back window "JUST MARRIED" as we took off for our honeymoon. It was on there about 2 weeks.

The paint itself came off the glass quite easy. The problem is, it seems to have left a residue that I cannot get rid of even 2 months later. When the window is dry, you cannot see it all. It looks perfect.

However, if there is dew or fog on the window, you can clearly see the outline of where it said "JUST MARRIED".

I have tried washing using Meguiars wash/wax, Armor All glass cleaner, and windex. The residue is still there. I am afraid to try razor blades or anything too harsh that may damage the factory tint.

Any ideas? Anyone had trouble with this?

Thank you all!

Bruin8124 - we're talking about the outside of factory glass, correct? If so, you can use naptha, or if that doesn't work, acetone. Wear latex or nitrile gloves because it will dry your skin and don't get it on anything but the glass. You can dampen a paper towel with it and wipe over the areas you see the residue. It will not hurt the glass - I've used it to get overspray off a windshield and other stubborn gunk.

I just wanted to add an extra warning here, about acetone : potent glue remover, but also a plastic melter. You did mention *and don't get it on anything but the glass*, but letting folks know up front it eats plastic gives an extra incentive to be... careful. All automotive glass is glass AFAIK, though a windshield is laminated (plastic between two layers of glass).

I've had the best luck with a paste Rain-X makes. My wife and I frequent automated car washes. The water is recycled and contains wax that gets deposited on your glass. This causes a foggy haze while driving in the rain at night severely limiting vision. This is the only stuff I have found to remove that wax from glass. If your windshield beads like waxed paint this will remove it. Sometimes it takes several applications to get it all off. You can tell its working when water sheets off the glass instead of beading.

Not a bad choice - it does contain Aluminum Oxide, an abrasive. It's fairly mild, but I would be careful about using it too much - it could theoretically scratch the glass, although unlikely unless it gets concentrated with the water and chemical in the emulsion evaporating over time.

Welcome to the forum. And congtrats on a recent wedding ?? ;)

I have a suggestion : try GooGone.

Acetone is probably the best glass cleaner around. However... it eats plastic so great care must be given when using it anywhere near a car.

Might be worth it to try isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol first. Then Goo Gone. If those two fail, try acetone.

Some nail polish removers contain acetone, some don't, so if you plan on using that, check the label first :)
