CommandView® Dual-Pane Panoramic Sunroof making noise!

Hello everyone,

I recently got a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Limited with CommandView® Dual-Pane Panoramic Sunroof.

For some reason - I keep hearing noise when the sunroof is CLOSED. Doesn't matter if the shade is open or not - makes a noise like something is loose/rattling from time to time (it is not coming from the sun glass storage). So I originally thought the shade was the root of the problem because it was not properly secured. However, the noise stops ONLY if the sunroof is lifted / open.

Is anyone having this problem? I just bought this car in January 2017. I took it to the dealer, and they tell me that they don't hear anything... I hear this every time I go over bumps, turn, uneven roads, etc. It's to a point where the passengers in the car are asking me what that noise is!

I'm assuming because it is a PANORAMIC sunroof - that due to changes in the pressures of all four tires - when it drives over uneven surfaces the frame of the car is "moving" - hence, making the noise from the sunroof. However, the noise is a bit frequent/severe that it is very annoying...

Please advise! Any help will be greatly appreciated!~ Or even how to tell the dealer that I need this fixed ASAP! It's driving me insane :(

The consensus is that you should use a safe lubricant to grease the seals when rattling starts. It goes away for 4 to 6 months.

Alternatively I took mine to the dealer and they took the front piece off, greased it and re-seated it. We'll see how long it'll take before the rattling comes back (it's starting).

I'm hoping that since my High Altitude was literally just built a few days ago that this will not be an issue. Haven't received it yet, but I pushed hard with the wife for the sunroof. Hope I don't get a told you so.

There is a roll of $200 tape that is used for the TSB concerning the rear seat squeak. This tape can be used to stop the sun roof from banging in the closed position. It is more noticeable in extremely low temperatures, but the tape works. Tech used it on my sunroof as he was searching for the elusive squeak.

I remember when GM released the panoramic roof in their G6 and a few other vehicles around 2006 for a couple years. Seemed great at the time but as they aged they would begin to rattle, leak, and and cause all sorts of problems until they no longer offered it because they couldn't keep up with the problems. I'm not too sure how the design has changed (I know GM didn't make these panoramic roofs, they were built and supplied from a 3rd party), so it'd be interesting to see where Chrysler gets theirs from. Google G6 panoramic roof (you can let google auto-fill because its a commonly searched topic) and be wow'd by all the problems. I don't mean to bash these pano-roofs, I just hope Chrysler owners don't have a repeat of what GM went through.

Edit: So after looking into it some more, I now realize Chryslers panoramic roof consists of 2 glass panes, where as GM's version is a 3 pane roof, so it is clear they are different in this sense.

Yes it is not actually rattling as such, it is the seal on the front glass moving against the frame as the body twists. Clean and lubricate the seal and all should be good for a few months.

Hello,

I too had the same issue with my pano roof, unfortunately in my case i had to bring my vehicle into my local dealer three times before they dug into anything. I had a tapping noise that was very intermittent and only heard over bumps and low speeds over uneven pavement.

First they found "loose hoses" and that did not fix it, fourth time bringing it back they replaced the Pano roof seal, but according to mopar parts listing the seal is only serviced with the glass. Once replaced the noise went away, and four months down the road still no noise.

Not to say they will do this for you, but i had to keep pestering them and even let them keep the vehicle for a night so they could spend as much time on it as they wanted. I even took one of the Service consultants and a Technician on a road test.

If you tell the dealership you know how to make it happen and can free some space in your day to show them on a test drive you may at least open the door to possibly getting it fixed because they can verify the noise is there at that point.

Thank you~ I mean yeah I was thinking of asking to take a technician with me as well. But just really frustrating that since it is a new car - that this is happening already. Fortunately, @JeepCares contacted me - so seeing if they have any luck with the dealer. This helps me a lot that I'm not the only one going "crazy" and seeming 'anal' in regards to this issue.

Thanks again and thank you everyone for your comments!

General maintenance for panoramic glass seal.
Lubricating seal can be a messy job and more work than you want. I now use one of the foam paint brushes tapered to a v on the end and about 1 to 2 inch in length. Then take my favourite formula which now is aerospace 303 and spray some in a small container. I then saturate my brush and apply liberally neatly around the seal front and back on the top side. It soaks in which is the secret and no mess on glass or paint. I will apply this to the underside but only a couple of times a year. Can easily be done under 5 minutes. And I will do it after a car wash so it's clean.
Benefits are keeps rubber in good shape plus has sunscreen protection plus enjoying a quiet ride.!!!

Hi Everyone!

Just thought I provide an update.

So @JeepCares was able to provide the STAR case information to the dealer and I did a drive around with the technician. Luckily, the noise was present going on even paved roads.

Dropped it off yesterday and they will go through the options to see what needs to be done to be fixed!

Thank you very much @JeepCares you were very helpful! I'll post an updated to let everyone know what method they used to fix it. And hopefully, that will be the last time to the dealer!

Have a great day everyone!

17 times?!...Seriously? After it keeps coming back what did the dealer say?

Apparently the technician never 'heard' of the noise in the Cherokees. And that he will study up on the STAR case. I'm just more frustrated with the amount of time it takes to get this fixed. Not like they're going to compensate me for my time... Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

Thank you for the heads up though~

I installed the mopar/kicker speakers and it magically solved the sunroof issue.

In all seriousness though, I will probably try the 808 or whatever it is on the rubber and see if that helps. It's slightly annoying, but I usually have the music up or the sunroof tilted open so I don't hear it that much.

I'm going to copy paste another comment I left on a different thread...

I have the exact same noise on my 2015 Limited. It started happening weeks after purchasing the vehicle new. I've brought it into the dealer 6 times now, also called Jeep directly to have them work with the dealer a couple of those times. Still not fixed. It never will be. I'm so upset about it!

Every time I've brought it in they say it's fixed. Drive off the lot and it's still making noise. Each time they keep the Jeep for 3 days. Such a huge hassle. I'm so glad I DID NOT purchase the extended warranty. It would have been a worthless purchase.

The dealership and Jeep have 100% lost me as a customer because of this. Paid $1,500 extra for something that is super annoying and they can not (most likely will not) fix it. Had the Jeep for almost two years now, and that noise is the first thing people notice when I give them a ride in it. Pathetic. This will certainly affect the resale value when it comes time to sell.
Additionally, I've taken the service manager on a test drive 3 times, each time he can hear the noise. Still no fix. I've given up on trying to fix it.

Wow thank you for everyone for their input. Really wish I had known this before...

Just to let everyone posted - I took it to the dealer - and apparently they went through the STAR case that @JeepCares has provided. The dealer went through all the "necessary actions" and still present of the noise.

Therefore, the dealer contacted me letting me know that they have ordered a whole new panoramic roof and will replace the entire part. Hopefully it is suppose to come in today. I had it in there for awhile. Good thing I still kept my old car so I've been driving that around. Whew.

I will keep everyone posted on this frustrating journey! Thanks again ) ~

Hi everyone,

Another update, they replace the entire glass of the roof. But apparently they also ordered the "rollers" and it is coming from Detroit. So got my car back for about a week. And will have to take it back in to get it installed.

But as of now...my roof does not close all the way on its own. I have to keep pressing the button and then it will close...

:(

Hopefully this helps others who are having similar issues. I will update again once I go back in to get the 'rollers' installed~

Hi guys,

Quick update, they replaced everything - with the "rollers" and so far so good! No Sounds! It has been about several days as of now. So we shall see!

But now...my dash and navigation screen won't turn off when I turn off the car...

This is getting really ridiculous! :(@Jeepcares

It actually doesn't shut off.

I turn off the engine, navigation and the dash is still on, get out of the car, lock the door - and everything is still on.

I come back an hour later - everything is on.

So right now - it's parked with the screens on. Even my charging station is 'active' after engine is fully off. @JeepCares

I purchased a 2017 Cherokee Trailhawk with the dual pane sun roof. From the day I took delivery, it has had a rattle (for want of a better description) on the passenger side between the two panes of glass. The dealer lubricated the area according to instructions from FCA. This worked for a week or so and the noise started again so the dealer used a different lubricant according to instructions from FCA. This also failed so the dealer replaced the entire sunroof. This has also failed.
My advice: Don’t buy a jeep with a sun roof.
Additionally, we had another problem with a noise above the driver side pillar that was diagnosed as a separator that was not installed during the manufacturing process. The car was in the shop for nine days to fix the issue. They did fix the problem but damaged the headliner in the process. The car has been in the shop three more times (for 3 or 4 days each time) to install a new headliner with remarkably awful results. The third time successfully installed the headliner but damaged the trim on the pillar between the front window and the passenger door. Another visit to the shop to get that fixed only to get the car home and find that the Homelink (the garage door opener in the visor) no longer works. The car is back in the shop and I am starting the Lemon Car process.
My advice is: Buy a Toyota 4Runner

Dealer incompetence is not limited to Jeep.

Recently got my 2017 Limited, and my prime directive is to keep the dealer's hands away from anything that isn't routine.

The only problem I had with my 2014 was noise from the sunroof, which was fixed only after several tries and replacement of the entire sunroof including the frame. They had the car for a month. The did a decent job, if you don't count the fact that they broke the shade and had to order a new one. The headliner was mostly OK except for a couple of dirty spots. You may notice that my 2017, which I factory ordered, has no sunroof, which, incidentally, provides several inches of additional headroom.

By the way, my car before my 2014 Cherokee was a Toyota Rav4 Limited V6. Nice vehicle. The first time I took it in for service at Toyota they bent the metal flange that ran from the front to the back under the doors on the driver side. On the next visit they lost spacers that kept the bolts holding the spare tire from rattling. The third time that damaged the rear bumper and it had to be sent to a body shop. The fourth time they lowered the car from the lift with the left front fender right over a tool box. Shall I go on?

Hey everyone, so about a year ago I got a new 2017 Cherokee Limited. About 3 months ago I started hearing a random rattling noise. Once every couple of weeks. Then last month it has become a constant. Took it to the dealership for them to look it over and I told them it seems to be coming from the sunroof. 8 hrs later and they tell me the hear the rattling but cant fix it. They said they have no idea what to do. I also have some issues with my transmission shifting hard and not down shifting going up hills. They said they reset the transmission but still having the issue. All they left me with was they would let me know if they can find any information out about a fix. What should I do at this point? I hate driving this car with all the noise. Its making me go crazy thanks

I just have to chime in on this. I got my 75th Anniversary Cherokee brand new in Nov 2016 and have had it in multiple times for the dealer to completely dismantle the sunroof then put it back together. I love having it and use it all the time, but it has been a pain and just ignoring it is not possible. It has definitely turned me off from having a panoramic sunroof ever again. :|

Well, looks like everybody has solved their issues with the sunroof. No posting since April:) I better write something to keep this thread alive. 2016 TH. I had my panoromic rattling sound fixed before the warranty ended. Rattling sound is gone for the last 1.5 years, knock on wood. It was really annoying. I also lately started using some lube to maintain it. But now I have some wind noise on HWY. Regarless whether it is windy day or not, wind noise is constant and coming from the top. I have had this issue for sometime. But I just kept ignoring it. Now I am out of warranty. I took a close look and noticed the front panel where it meets the front frame is not perfectly alligned with the frame. I mean glass is not at the same level with the metal frame. It is rather downwards. Not much but noticable. And I believe the wind hits that front area. Initially I thought the wind noise was coming from the back even from the trunk door, or antenna. But I looked everything seems normal back there unless I am missing somthing. I have no exterior mods, no roof racks.

Now I am curious to know where, if any, the screws are for the front glass . Maybe by adjusting them, I can lift the front glass up just a little. Or any other suggestins you may have.

Thanks
