2016/17 Jeep Cherokee - problems resolved?

Hi everyone,

I'm considering a new vehicle and stumbled across the 2016/17 Jeep Cherokee. I think it's a great looking vehicle with a very comfortable interior and a lot of promise. The only thing that has prevented me from purchasing one so far is the negative publicity over the 9 speed transmission, as well as other common complaints that are easily searchable online.

If you have a 2016/17 Cherokee, please chime in and let me know how satisfied you are with your purchase. Have you had any transmission issues? Reliability issues? Quirks or complaints?

My build would consist of the following...

Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk
- 3.2l 6 cylinder
- trailer tow package
- cold weather package
- comfort package (not sure if I need this, bit worried about the tailgate accidentally opening against a mountain bike carrier/etc).
- black wheels
- NO moonroof (I'm only 5'9" but my head hits the ceiling in the back seat, reclining barely helps)
- NAV Ready (try to get the dealer to activate it as part of a deal)

I know it doesn't directly relate, but I am also considering a 2016 GMC Canyon SLT (or SLE nightfall edition). Both platforms suit what I'm looking to do, however the Jeep is likely easier to deal with on a daily basis (here in Toronto, ON)

Have a 2016, the only issue I have had was the rear axle actuator whine that was resolved under warranty. Currently at just over 8900 miles and would take the Cherokee TH over the Canyon hands down.

Plus I am a former GM loyalist saying this, welcome.

I have a 2015 TH purchased in September of 2014. I absolutely love my vehicle. It does great for any use. This summer alone I towed my travel trailer for just over 2,500 miles and have not had a single issue.

2016 16,000 miles no issues that couldn't be resolved with a shut off of the engine and a restarting it.

Technically speaking the mechanical issue with the transmission was rectified in Dec 2014 build so any after that have the same fixed hardware.

So you are good to go!

Love my TH that is a 2016 with towing and cold weather package. HIDs and speaker upgrades were easy peasy.

What shall we have? An '82 Margaux! Is it any good? Good....?, It will make you believe in God!

Thanks for all the replies so far! Hoping this thread can be of value to many others with the same questions that I have.

Would you all recommend the comfort package for the keyless start/remote tailgate, or is it a feature that is prone to issues? I'm undecided, I think it would be great to have, but I've also never owned a vehicle with it so I'm not sure how valuable it is. It's a bit hard to find one optioned exactly as I stated in my first post, but it's much easier to find one without the comfort package

Definitely recommend the Comfort and Convenience grp. This is my first vehicle with it and it is extremely helpful with extreme weather, gets it toasty in the cold and cool in blazing sun.

2016 TH owner here. Just hit 10000 miles and 9 months of problem free ownership. Still love the car!

Super encouraging as my new trailer should dry for less than 3,200 and about 400 at the hitch. If you've towed successfully I'm very much looking forward to doing the same in spite of the naysayers! Oh, and absolutely no problems to date on my 16 High Altitude Limited 3.2 AD II Tow.

I did a survey of 100 forum members and found that 69% of 2014 owners had some type of issue with their Cherokee (this could be something minor but that they still would take to dealer, or a total lemon). 2015 it dropped to 63% and 2016 it was 19%. I'm sure the 2016 Jeeps are still the newest, but that is still over 2/3 drop from 2015 and for severity of the issues for 2016 only 17% of that 19% (1/6) said it was anything serious. Mind you there were no controls to impact how biased my survey was.

I'm impressed you managed to get 100 people to vote at all when we can't even get 25 people to vote on the Cherokee of the month page. I don't know of anyone who has had problems with a 2016.

There is the guy with Phoenix in his user name that has a laundry list of issues in a brand new 2016. His first item was it having the wrong passenger mirror leading him to believe it had BSM.

You can post a survey via the forum but it's basic. I never saw yours so don't know what options you had.

You get used to getting in and out of your Jeep (and starting it) without reaching for a key pretty quickly. I occasional have to rent cars for business travel and I now find I really miss it when they do not have that feature. As for the tailgate, the auto-reverse when it detects an obstruction works really well both when opening and closing. The ability to hit the close button as you grab your last item from the back and walk away comes in pretty handy especially when it is raining and you want to run for the house.

The sunroof was not on my list of options, however my wife really wanted it so I guess you know how that went. That being said, I am 6'2" and have no issues with headroom when it is closed. Not sure what kind of difference it makes to back seat passengers but 1) I rarely have anyone in the back, and 2) I'm not one of them. :)
