Hello everyone! Looked at a new Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Sunday when the dealer was closed and the window sticker listed “ParkSense® Rear Park Assist Unavailable -$50”

I’m guessing that has to do with the chip shortage. Is that the rear camera system, the audible alert, or both? Will the dealer enable the system at a later date?

Grateful for any help!

ParkSense warns you with an audible and visual alert if you are about to back into something. It can even brake for you to avoid the obstacle. It also offers rear cross path detection for anything coming from the sides as you back up. The rear camera is separate and will still work without ParkSense activated.

Only the dealer will be able to tell you if they can enable the system at a later date.

Yeah, the chip shortage thing alright. I doubt you can add it later, at least not for fifty bucks. :(
Thank you @Skidmark !

The $50 refund / credit was so low I assumed maybe it was just a reimbursement for not having use of the system until the chip was available. It’s a pretty significant safety system to give up for only $50.

I really appreciate everyone taking the time to post and help!

Ya no kidding, especially when it's a pretty large and important part of the $1000+ Technology Group...That should be about at least $1000 off of the asking price if it were me negotiating a purchase price nowadays...I have all of that on mine, and have really grown to love it. Can't imagine not having those features now...😎

My brother had that problem with his 2022 TH Elite when he purchased it a couple months ago. EXCEPT the window sticker said he had that option, and there was no $50.00 ( what a joke) credit. It's not just a matter of plugging in a "chip" later, as no part of the system was installed at the factory. He asked me how to activate it, and I told him push the button on the dash below the screen, but there was none. I then asked him to check his rear bumper for the sensors. There were none installed. After a short battle with the dealer and FCA, the dealer has agreed to install ParkSense on his vehicle at no charge. My brother is 79, so this is an important safety feature for him, and one he had on his two previous Trailhawks.

You probably could haggle more off since its not being included in the package. Personal opinion here but I rather have the Jeep without it. The backup camera is enough when backing up. It can be disabled but if not the beeping gets annoying in tight quarters such as garage and when hooking up or backing a trailer. A non needed feature with a good backup camera which the Cherokee has.

As you stated, it can be disabled with a push of the button when needed. But I think the biggest benefit is the rear cross path detection that it provides. I know from experience that It definitely detects vehicles coming which are not yet visible on the backup camera. With the way people race thru parking lots the rear view camera alone isn't enough to avoid backing out into some speed demon's path.

Parksense has saved my ass on more than one occasion. When you get close to an object when backing and aren’t fully awake or paying proper attention it will slam the brakes on pretty violently. It works as designed and it’s a great feature for us distracted drivers. Lol

Not sure they are the same thing. My '22 KL has Cross Path Detection, but not Rear Park Assist.
Yeah, you are right. After a little Googling, it does appear that 'ParkSense' has several functions that it may or may not be equipped with. There is, for an example, an Active Park Assist function for parallel parking which I don't have on my Cherokee.

To me, it's not even a matter of having/not having Park Sense. It's the audacity that they have that removal of the feature is only worth a $50 credit. If so, tell them you'll accept a 10yr/100k extended warranty in lieu of the Park Sense. $50 for that warranty, right? Or perhaps add the Tow Group package for $50, right?

1000% this. I always check my mirrors and do the ol' over-the-shoulder when I'm backing up, and use the camera for further information, and the cross path warning has saved me a few times when I didn't even see other vehicles with my own eyes. It works well.
