I ordered a 2021 Olive Green Trailhawk on 8/5/21. So, on 9/2 I asked the dealer if they had heard anything on the order and the answer was "They've picked it up." I asked if this was a confirmation or do they have any idea when it may be built? The answer was the same, they've picked it up. So, what does "They've picked it up" mean? Now I wonder if it'll be a '21 or maybe a '22. If a '22, will the packages be the same or different. Or will the Olive Green still be available....and on and on. All that to ask the club have y'all got any thoughts or insight on this or should I just be patient? But I want it now! WANH!

Thanks folks.

'They've picked it up' ? Sounds vaguely like the Jeep could be en route from the plant, to... the dealership, hopefully.

Dealerships have access to precise tracking. They should be able to tell you where the Jeep is, if it's been assembled of course. If it's en route, they should see when it is supposed to arrive.

Ask to speak to the sales manager. If he/she remains vague, go above their head.

One thing I find a little odd : isn't August 5 a little late to be taking orders for present model year ? I'll bet Covid had something to do with that.

If you go back to the dealership, ask what is the status on the order, there are codes for this and they can get them :

I believe you can track delivery status yourself. Ask the dealer for the VIN and the tracking URL. They may need your email.

The site USED to be www.Jeep.com/vots, but it doesn't seem to work the same as before. Your dealer should know.

Thank you so much Mark. Exactly what I need. And yes, I asked the salesperson about the late date order and he informed me that "They're still building 2021s". So, we shall see. I will report back after my visit with the dealer. Again, thank you Mark.

It's not unusual Mark for the manufacturers to carry over previous model years, especially when there are no substantial changes, they've been doing that for decades. The VIN code really just denotes manufacture date. In this case, we don't even know if the OP's car has even started the build, or it's one of the thousands that have been fully assembled, and in various stages of assembly sitting idle for months now, and just waiting for chips, and various other components that just aren't available. Between all manufacturers globally, that's literally hundreds of thousands, if not millions of vehicles that have had the "build status" started, which starts with the VIN, but are not yet ready for delivery. It's an extremely bad time in the auto industry right now. By far the worst in automotive history, and we're about to see who's going to evolve and succeed, and who isn't. As for the OP's Cherokee, it could go either way, and it will be interesting to see if it will be an early build 2022, or an extremely late 2021. It's all depending on the day the VIN was created, which denotes build date...😎

A great example of that is the "2018" JK. 2018 was the debut of the JL, but Jeep sold JKs for several months as 2018 models before the JLs started to deliver. Zero difference from the 2017 models.

Same with the updated 2019 KL's, early release, and some really early build dates...😎

Well, that one I'll disagree with you. That's the complete opposite of holding over a model into the next MY. There were no old-model 2019 KLs. In fact, the 2018 run of the KL was extremely short since the 2019 refresh debuted at the January 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. @sqenixs can tell you when he got his, and it was very early. Yes, it's a bit of an outlier but he got his early none-the-less. I ordered mine in April 2018 and took delivery in June 2018 only because I was gone all of May.

Compare that to the 2022 KL. Here it is almost mid-September and still no announcement about 2022 KLs. I'm in the camp that there will be zero difference between 2021 and 2022, other than maybe a cosmetic tweak. That way Jeep can rebrand whatever vehicles they want as "2022".

Agreed, it's not the same, I was referring mostly to early builds, and they're completely different models. 2021 and 2022's are going to be exactly the same with the only difference being possible trim group accessory package differences, if they even do that...😎

I bought used, but my 2019 was built Nov 2017 as a 2019 model year. It was built in the pilot plant, before full production started.

Went by the dealership this afternoon. Sales manager is out, owner is out so talked to salesperson. Short and sweet...Picked it up means it has a vin assigned. I asked if he had a schedule, asked if he had a program to check status, asked if he could see the codes associated with vin. He answered in the negative on all the above. He said once there is a vin assigned they (the dealership) don't get any more updates until it's sitting on a truck in their lot. I just played dumb, ask him to give me a call if they got any updates. I suspect that IF the owner had been there I would know a lot more about what and when. But alas the owner has been "korn teened" so it may be awhile before I catch up to him.

Thanks to all for sharing your thoughts and knowledge. I sincerely appreciate each of you. I will update this thread when I have something concrete to report back but I don't expect to know anything before the jeep just shows up at the dealership. Oh, and this is a small dealership in a small town so.......

Thanks again,
DPrice

Here's a Sept. 9 update that is probably relevant to you: Semiconductor shortage halts Jeep Cherokee, Chrysler minivan plants for next two weeks.

Notice that it says "halts," not "slows down."

WOW! The darnedest thing happened today. Got a call from the dealer about 2:00 this afternoon. They had just unloaded my brand new Jeep 5 weeks and 1 day from the time it was ordered and the Belvidere plant was shut down at least one full week during that time. Things weren't looking good, I was thinking maybe Christmas before I got it. The dealer was surprised too, swore they couldn't get updates etc. so there ya go fellows. Crazy times we're livin' in. This note as just an FYI and to say thanks again for all y'all's help and information. I guess if the dealer turns it in as a "sold order" it really does go to the front of the line. It was built as a 2021 model year, by the way.
