Just curious what everyone is running? The owner's manual says it will accept 87 and there may be some low grade/low speed pinging. It recommends using 89 though.

It's rare to find 89 anywhere near me so I'll either have to run 87 or 91. I had to run 93 in my Audi (was chipped) so I'm not really going to feel any wallet shock on premium.

Dealership filled my first tank for me on 87. With winter grade gas out right now I'm thinking I'll be running 91 for now.

I use 93 but 91 will work fine in them.

I've been using 89. Shouldn't you use the grade that is recommended which is 89 if you plan on keeping the vehicle many years? Or am I wrong?

I started out with 87 because the Jeep Sales guy told me so. Then I read on this forum that I was supposed to use 89. After two fills with 89 I went back to 87. Absolutely no difference - not in MPG, not in performance and no pinging whatsoever.

I might go back to 89 when we hit 100F in the desert.

Chances are they're suggesting 89 for the extra detergent content. Or at least that was the explanation for the 89 requirement in the trucks.
no, has to do with engine compression and preignition

87 here, no problem

I would stick with 89. You may not hear engine knock/ping under 87 because most cars have an electronic device the detects and eliminates ping. Without that device your engine would probably be pinging right now under 87 so I just avoid that stress on the engine and stick with what so recommended in the manual.

I usually keep my vehicles a long time. I traded in an 02 Yukon for my Cherokee. So if the 89 octane keeps the engine cleaner, as you say, I guess I'll keep using that even though in the short term it cost more. Maybe in the long term less engine problems?? I'm no mechanic but I want a smooth running engine when its 10 years old. My Yukon ran great at 12 years old (low mileage though). Chrysler must recommend 89 for a reason.

89 so far for me. I may experiment with 91 to see if there is any difference in mileage (there was on my old GC even though 89 was recommended)

I'm not worried about cost (job perk is all fuel paid for) but anything to increase range and time between fills is a plus.

The manual says 87 is OK but they recommend 89. page 512 shows 87-89 but suggests 89. the i4 handles 87 no problem.

i use 93 but 91 will do.

...i know all the "your just throwing away money" stories but your not.
87 is not run through the same filters as 91-93 and andy blend will be part 87 and 91-93 Blended together. i use the 91 because it is less likely to have contaminants in it. so cleaner injectors and longer life on the fuel filter.

people can run what ever they want but the slower your fuel burns the less wear on parts and the more efficiency you get from your fuel.

now the cost of premium gas off sets the efficiency so your not saving any money.

i own my vehicles for long periods of time so i do what ever i can to make them last a longer, while still having fun of course.

I've put three tanks of 85 in so far. After reading the manual, I should probably spring for mid-grade which is 87 out here . . .
