OK guys and gals, I am very good with electrical stuff. Rewired my house, done multiple changes to multiple cars (stereo’s, amps, cb’s, cruise control, etc. you get the idea) so today I say “Let’s hardwire the radar detector”. Easy enough, right? Especially using a fuse tap.

Using the interior fuse box (behind the cubby) I could not find a single fuse that shut off with the ignition. The only ones that actually killed power were for the fog lights, but then only gave power when the fogs were on. Even tried empty spots. Hot all the time. I tried the fuse for the front washer pump. Pump doesn’t work with the car off, but fuse tap gets power. Figured the pump must be controlled elsewhere (BCM?). Anyway, ended up using the fuse for the power lumbar and just shutting the radar detector off manually as I threw up my hands. BTW it’s an Escort Redline EX if it matters. Using a factory hardwire setup.

Thoughts? What am I missing?

Something like that. Two rules 1: Speed limits are merely a starting point and 2: You can take the fireman out of the fire truck, but you can’t take the fire truck outta the fireman!!

Ya, that's right. Search one of the dashcam threads, there's got to be a simple solution...😎

And that’s what I was missing. I must have had an ID 10 T error in my simple brain….or in other words IDIOT error. I know the power outlet below the ac controls is only on with the ignition! . Can’t see the forest for the trees sometimes I guess….

On these KLs (mine's a 2019), I could not find a 12V switched source anywhere in the interior. I could only find 2 switched ignition sources in the fuse box under the hood.

I just plug my radar detector into the forward cigar outlet. It is only ON when the ignition is ON.
If you need more outlets use a Y cable.
Maybe you can find the wires behind the dash and hardwire in there?
When I am following a GMC vehicle I just pull the plug to stop on noise, it is pretty convenient.

You just need a better detector that has decent BSM filtering.
after I did an update on my MAX2 it stopped 95% of it.

SO this is what I have discovered. Once the car goes to “sleep” the power is shut off. The radar detector shuts down and remains off until I turn it back on. No it’s not the detectors auto shut off feature (amazing what you find in the directions) because the minimum setting is 60 mins. The system shuts down after about 15-20. So I’m all set AFAIK, but thought the info would help out someone else

The cig lighter socket powers on and off with IGN AFAIK - so you could splice into it's pwr wire...
