I have the 3.6 pentastar motor. 2015 jeep trailhawk. I have the 12 bolts loose. What else is there to loosen up for the valve cover to come off? Yes I do have the connections off as well. Do I need to just pry it off? Or am I missing something? Thank u
Hi @Jim 36 ,

Is yours a Cherokee (3.2 Pentastar) or Grand Cherokee (3.6 Pentastar)? Both are the same in terms of valve cover removal except the ease of getting to bolts and what needs to come out.

  • Which cover are you doing? Bank 1 (if a Cherokee, the side closest to the firewall) or Bank 2 (closest to the radiator)?
  • In addition to the bolts, if you're doing Bank 1, you need to remove the PCV valve. Two torx screws. The cover cannot come off with it on.
  • For both covers you must remove the camshaft sensor. (1 torx screw).
  • I'm assuming you've removed the coil packs. They need to come off.
  • The phaser actuators (solenoids) do not need to be removed from the covers but their wiring must be unplugged.
  • In addition to the screws, at the front end of each head (the side closest to the serpentine belt), the covers have a dab of RTV sealant where the head and timing cover meet. There will be some resistance in this area when you try to remove them.
once this is done, you can go around each over with a plastic trim stick to break the seal of the cover gasket. From there the cover should come up. Note the gasket should be replaced else you may have a leak (it gets compressed). Also, you need to clean the head surface before putting back together including getting the old RTV off and putting 2 dabs of new on.
