Hello Everyone,

I am planning to buy a jeep Cherokee and was wondering that if I should go for v6 or 4 cylinder? I do work on the city but I like to drive and go for road trips. I was wondering that what is the difference in mpg or l/km to each? I drive a 3.7l v6 2002 jeep liberty now and I am not liking the gas mileage on it. It is currently giving me 17l/km.

I hope you can answer my question to what is the difference in mpg or l/km for v6 and 4 cylinder and what would you recommend buying?

cheers

Please tell me that's a typo "17 l/km". Do you mean 17 l/100km ?

Actually the 3.2 is not bad on gas. I am sure it would be better than a 3.7 just because of engine size.

There is not much difference in my opinion between the I4 and V6, especially considering the performance difference.

My 2014 is rated:
19/27 V6 AD1 and with AD2 19/26 AD2 is what the Trail Hawk has.

22/31 I4 AD1

I have a V6 AD2 limited.
In the real world I get 19/30+ if I keep my speed between 55-70.

I personally would go with the V6. The Cherokee and Trail Hawk is a heavy vehicle to start with.

Even with a trailhawk, bigger tires, a lift, and roof basket. I’m still averaging around 19/24mpg. Overall average is around 19.5 with about 70% city 30% highway.

For the minimum mpg increase, it doesn’t seem that the I4 is worth it. The v6 gives you more power. Iv always been in the mindset that there’s a line between how small an engine can be and still do it’s job and do it’s job efficiently. With the 4 cylinder being as small and under powered as it is, I can’t help but think it’s going to try a lot harder, be forced to rev higher and be forced to hang out in a lower gear just to do it’s job. So the numbers jeep puts out for mpg. I don’t really believe those are real world numbers

Hi there and welcome to the forum
Before I bought this 2015 V6 Cherokee, we had two 3.7L Libertys (2002 and 2005), so I know what you're talking about ;)

With the 3.2L, you're looking at 30-35% better mileage than a 3.7L Liberty. The 2.4L 4 cylinders does normally produce slightly better mpgs, but not by much. We have a lot of forum members here with a 2.4L and overall they like it. Hard for me to tell you if you'd like the 2.4L though, it's a highly personal thing. And for the record, there is another 4 cylinder engine available now : the 2.0L turbo, with one tiny less horsepower but roughly 50 ft.lbs more torque than the 3.2 V6, and a 2 mpg advantage as well over the V6. But in Canada, the turbo is a whopping $1000 extra ($500 in the US).

I was averaging about 14 L/100Km (mostly small city driving) with the Libertys in summer, and about 17 L/100Km in the colder winter months. Now I get roughly 10-11 L/100Km in the summer and 13-14 L/100Km in winter with the V6 Cherokee. On the highway, if I keep it below 112 Km/h (70mph), I can get 8 L/100Km (30 mpg US).

I came from a Grand Cherokee 5.7 Hemi, so I am happy with the 2.4 fuel economy. A lot of 3.2 owners put down the 2.4, but if there was a 5.7 option for the KL, then the 3.2 would viewed in the same way, that's human nature. You have to be the judge, try them both and decide. So far the 2.4 has never disappointed or left me regretting not buying a V6. Will the V6 be smoother, quieter and pull harder? For sure. I paid cash on the barrel head for my 2015 when I bought it new, so for me, I could not justify the $1500 option, but if you are buying used, then it's not really a cost factor.

Captain Obvious reporting for duty!

Which 4-cylinder are you considering - the 2.4 Tigershark or the 2.0 Turbo?

OK, maybe not so obvious.

Yeah I mentionned the turbo too, until I later saw this at the top of the first post :

V6 or I4 (4 cylinder) 2015-2017

That rules out the 2.0 ;)

How important is gas mileage? The 4 cylinder should get 10-15% better fuel economy.

Otherwise the v6 is better in every way.

More important than the engine however...

I wouldnt buy a 15 or earlier unless you know its had a new transmission.. or its a very late 2015 model.

We own both, and the 2.4 gets about 2-3 MPG better in the city.
On the highway about the same. I only required my wife have
at least the ADI. She's happy with it. I on the other hand had to
have the V6 for towing. The reason I bought the 2019 was because
I enjoyed driving the 2018 so much! The only issue I have with
the 2.4 is it consumes oil, so I have to stay on top of that. Other
than that, I have no issues with it. Test drive both. Also for me
the smaller the engine (with the exception of the 2.0T) the more
gas I have to give it to get going. HTH

Think of resale value also. In the Amarillo, Tx. area a used V6 model will bring lots more at trade-in time. When the price of a used Cherokee looks way low around here, it's a sure thing that it has the 4 cylinder engine.

I have had 2 3.2 v6 BUT the turbo has them beat in my opinion. In CA i look at the performance part of it as we dont get the snow here. There is .20 price diff here from 87 to 91 and that alone is not a big diff to me. In my 3.2 i used 87 EXCEPT at the drag strip and there i used 91. My wife even said 4 get the 2.4 as there is no power there. The turbo mpg is 2 mpg better in both in town and freeway.

I have a 2017 2.4 4X4, and I average 27 mpg - a little better on the highway, a little worse in town. I don't off-road, but I haul a small trailer now and then, so I didn't NEED the V6, and I've been very happy with the 2.4's performance.
