Good evidence that a new, turbocharged 3.0 inline six-cylinder engine is coming from FCA: https://www.autoblog.com/2019/11/12/fiat-chrysler-patent-turbo-inline-six-engine/

There's no explicit suggestion that the new engine would end up in a future Cherokee, but article does note that, "Mopar Insiders' output figures would give the engine long enough legs to replace the 3.2-liter and 3.6-liter Pentastar V6s, as well as the 5.7-liter Hemi V8."

Thus, I can imagine a scenario in which the 2.0T becomes the base engine in the Cherokee, with a somewhat detuned 3.0T as the optional engine upgrade. Then a fire-breathing tune or tunes of the 3.0T would become the primary engine options in the Grand Cherokee and other larger Jeeps. This would be similar to the way Ford deploys its Ecoboost lineup.

Also, having just two ICE options for the Cherokee would leave room for a hybrid or all-electric Cherokee as well, as I suggested in this thread: https://jeepcherokeeclub.com/4-2014-jeep-cherokee-general-discussion/241224-next-gen-cherokee-predictions-wish-list.html.
