Some people are saying it might just be a software issue . . .

This sucks. I really hope this doesn't turn into a huge mess. Software issues can cause serious hardware damage that doesn't get seen untill years down the road . . . .

Those "vibrations" people are feeling, those are gears wearing on other gears, which means physical damage . . .

Even if Chrysler does put out a recall, a transmissision is not something you want to replace in a vehicle by some local Chrysler mechanic with zero transmission experience. I've seen those guys mess up oil changes . . .

Chrysler needs to put out an official notice and advise concerned consumers what is going on asap, I'm ready to cancel my build order.

I don't want to blow things out of proportion, but is it safe to say on this forum is seems like approx. 3/10 have experienced transmission problems??

I think it is too early to panic. Remember, Jeep sold over 10,000 Cherokees in November. I have seen maybe 6 or 8 owners here having (potential) issues with their transmission.

So far my TH has performed flawlessly incl. one off road trip.

True but how many of those 10,000 owners are on this forum? I've thought of bailing out on my order but I'm going all in. This Jeep just looks too awesome and I want it! Power train is warrantied for 5 years/100,000 here in Canada so even if if does have mechanical issues it's not like it's gonna cost me anything dollar wise. If during those 5 years it turns out to be a lemon I'll just trade it in and go back to a Japanese vehicle :)

I was weary of buying a brand new model but I bought a 2007 Suzuki SX4 brand new in 2007 and put 260,000 km and if never gave me any problems. It was a new model at the time and heard all the 'don't buy a new model right when if comes out' but ignored them. Only issue the car ever gave me was the O2 sensor malfunctioning at 30,000 km (fixed under warranty) and nothing ever after that. Was a solid car and I drove if hard most if the time (it had a 5 speed manual). I'm hoping to have the same luck with the Cherokee :)

It has been my experience that most of the people who post on forums are the complainers or who are having problems for one reason or another. Very few people take the time or ever post about how great their vehicle is. That causes the posts about problems to appear to be far greater than than they actually are. Don't forget Chrysler launched the Cherokee into a strong wind to begin with by delaying it for software/transmission problems causing everyone to look for them now.

Macfan, that may be true, but if you look on the Crosstrek, or FJ chat rooms you don't see anything like this. Let's not forget both Chrysler and Fiat are not paragons of quality control. I've owned two jeeps, and a Chrysler Town & Country (most of my other cars were Ford). I won't get into the issues I've had with them, but the warranty always gave me a reason to forgive a few faults that occur after 50 or 60K (I always get the extended warranty). That said, I'm glad I didn't place my order for a TH. I hope Chrysler/Fiat reps are reading this blog. If they intend on building 500,000 of these trucks next year, they better do it right or build a lot more service bays at the dealerships.
I'll wait a few months and see if this clears up only because I hate the idea of buying a foreign truck (fj is moving back up the list).
Obviously they figured out what people want... on paper these are GREAT trucks. They just can't expect consumers to work out all the bugs.
FYI, I just sold my 99 lincoln town car (with 146K) and it never gave me any major problems, and that was a first year production model.

Sorry, but have never bought or researched a foreign car so I can't verify that. I will not buy a foreign car as a matter of principal. I have only bought one Ford in my 63 year life and that was a disaster. They had to rebuild the 6 cylinder head 3 times and never did get it right so I sold it off. I have had my Limited II, 3.2L, 3 weeks now and pounded it on I 75 with out any problems.

No problems with our Trailhawk so far [knock on wood]. There have been a few unusual noises but nothing that worried me. I assume the vehicle is doing something.

I choose to go with a stock Trailhawk only the V6 and tow package. I figured that there is enough complexity as is. Adding additional tech/luxury packages would only make things worse.

I do software development and testing. I am well aware how difficult it is to create algorithms for every conceivable variable a user may through at a vehicle. We are all beta testers. If something is funky or seems wrong, try to document it as thoroughly as possible. The best would be to record a video of how you get the problem to occur and what is going wrong (inside and outside the vehicle as required). Provide these videos to the service department so they can reproduce the problem. It really helps.

I'd like to keep this poll going. I don't have mine yet, but these issues are making me nervous.

You must mean the engines from Trenton (6 cylinder) or Dundee (4 cylinder) Michigan, the 9 speed transmission from Kokomo, Indiana, and the vehicle assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Complex in Toledo, Ohio. Could this be the Jeep Cherokee you are talking about? LOL.

macfan, No argument. I've only ever owned American cars (north american to be precise), but I really was hoping Jeep would do it right this time. I really like this vehicle, but three weeks into the sales cycle I have a hunch a trend is forming. I hope I'm wrong.
BTW, last four cars were three town cars and a Mercury Grand Marquis. That get's me back to 1987 (along with my 2 cherokees for work and whatever my wife was driving). Lincoln and Mercury ran flawlessly with the last t-car being sold last week to a very happy buyer. just saying, America makes great cars, I'm just hoping the cherokee will be one of them.

So, which one are you? Painting with such a broad stroke is unfair and short sided. If you read this persons posts from the beginning you will see praise when due and concern when due. A virtually undriveable TH as mine that is just sitting in the dealer's service bay with ongoing undiagnosable problems (let alone fixable) is not an aberration or a problem I or anyone else was looking for. Indeed the problem "is greater than I was looking for."

These forums serve a valuable function for the new Cherokee owners to share their exultation as well as their utter frustration with their new vehicle. Hopefully the forum serves to educate and inform both buyers and the factory of the issues they need to focus on to move the brand and model forward. The software/transmission problems are not contrived to smear a new vehicle. I have not seen any post (though I haven't read all) by a troll whose goal is to denigrate Jeep. Rather, like myself, they love the vehicle and want it to perform to spec!

To conclude some of us are complainers does a large group a disservice...especially ones like me who, with a lifetime of chronic severe back pain, are not able to easily find a vehicle with just the right seat...like the Cherokee has and thus have a vested interest in a trouble free vehicle.

For people who are or have participated in this poll, if you ARE having issues, please post a brief description of your issue, if you had to bring it to get serviced etc.

This why we can maybe try and pinpoint the issues.

Thanks!
