Hey everyone,

I apologize if this has been posted, but my jeep did not come with the factory tow package, and I had them add the hitch at the dealer. I asked about installing the transmission oiler cooler but I was told they couldn't do it. Has anyone had one added aftermarket or have the dealer install? If so how much did it run?

Thanks!

All Jeep Cherokee KLs have the transmission cooler.

Open your hood and look in front of the radiator. Is there a "smaller" radiator much shorter, but as wide as the main radiator? That is the transmission cooler.

It is added in the package: from the website

Trailer Tow Group
7 and 4 Pin Wiring Harness
Auxiliary Transmission Oil Cooler
The auxiliary transmission oil cooler helps maintain the transmission at a lower temperature and promotes longer transmission life during the stress of towing or during hot summer temperatures.
Class III Receiver Hitch
Full Size Spare Tire
Trailer Tow Wiring Harness
3.517 Final Drive Ratio (Unavailable with some configurations)
Heavy Duty Engine Cooling (Unavailable with some configurations)
The heavy-duty engine cooling system is designed to vent excess heat generated by heavy engine use.

The website is wrong. Check under your hood. EVERY KL has the transmission cooler.

There is also no such thing as "HD cooling". Same cooling in tow vs non-tow (at least for the 4x4 KLs). I dare anyone to prove me wrong. Find a different part number radiator or fan for tow vs non-tow.

So what you are saying is FCA is fraudulent in their representation of package contents?

All vehicles(Jeep and non Jeep) I have had in the present and the past have that small transmission cooler in front of the radiator. There may be some vehicles out there that use some other means. That is the basic cooler required of transmissions as they do get hot also. That is standard cooling.
There is also another cooler by the radiator for the air conditioning condenser unit.
The aux cooler might just be a larger one.
I believe the 2014's it was included for some reason on all models. That was subject to a lot of discussion.

There is a limit as to how much you can put in front of the radiator and still get proper cooling for the engine.
An Aux transmission cooler can be done by a good radiator/performance shop. That is not really the dealers area as if it is not OEM install they generally will not do the job.

I am not really sure what comprises the Aux cooler. I know there was an extra fan involved as in my Grand Cherokee's tow package.
Now I might suggest checking out a tow group equipped vehicle at a dealer and see what the front looks like. Probably at least an extra fan unit involved for a higher air flow.
There are also lots of listing out there if you do a search. I have included a link just to give you an idea. I have no connection or recommendations with this particular listing.
It can be added though. So do not give up. Its not all that expensive.
Good luck on your adventure.

Just curious where did you get your facts from?

Okay, here are some codes for my cooling system which has the tow package: NHAP--Engine oil cooler
NHBP-Auxiliary oil cooler
NMCP--Heavy duty engine cooling

Now then if you have no tow package and have your options list, see if the three are listed on your KL. I have no idea what the NMCP is as it only says "Heavy duty engine cooling>l

Wow! The little fan that could :)

So you're telling me the only difference in the factory tow and adding it later is the "Heavy Duty Engine Cooling" which is an extra fan and a $12 cost delta!

A $12 difference in parts can more than double your tow capacity!? I am skeptical. I think the non-factory towing is vastly under rated. Also FCA adopting the SAE standards really undersells their capabilities compared to other brands that still use a self classification.

I am not telling you anything but the tow package includes the 3.517 final drive ratio and the NHBP-Auxiliary oil cooler.

Ok, I admit I wasn't entirely correct. There does seem to be a different cooling fan setup.

I remember trying to look this up before and I couldn't see any different components.

I have a 2015 2.4i sport with AD1 and no tow package. I have a transmission cooler. I can see it in front of my radiator.
I have read other threads on this forum where the consensus was that every Cherokee with the 9 speed gear box had an auxiliary transmission oil cooler and nobody could find what "HD cooling" really was. I guess it's two fans instead of one...

You get a different differential gear ratio, full size spare, and the double fan as far as I can tell.

Just a comment:
What constitutes AUX trans cooling is a good question. It could be a larger transmission cooling radiator that is installed and/or also maybe installed in all Cherokees regardless.
BUT when a duel thermostat controlled 2 fan unit appears for the Transmission radiator/and engine that adds a lot of extra cooling air flow over that transmission radiator.
Thus it can dissipate a lot more heat and I do mean a lot more heat. Especially if those fans are also variable speed. The problem is that the transmission needs to operate at a certain temperature range.
In that case to much cooling is not good.
That is one of the advantages of electronic fans tied to the transmission and engine temperature. I am guessing that duel fan setup with installed electronics is far more costly than that transmission cooler (mechanical) is .
Those fans and their controls have to be very high quality electronics or they would not generally last the life of the vehicle. A high quality fan(s) is not a cheap venture.

Depending on what you tow and the weight is the issue.
Before my Jeeps I towed a pop up camper with a Dodge Aries with no add on and was ok. Just changed the trans fluid yearly.
Also my boat and the camper with a Chevy V6 FWD wagon. I was fine but needed to run 20/50 to keep the engine running cooler. I still changed the trans fluid yearly.

My 2019 has dual fans, and a trans cooler stock.
Guess I'm missing the oil cooler? I could always
add one....

On the V6 the oil cooler is an oil/coolant heat exchanger and is located in the engine block 'V', so you won't see it externally. I believe all the V6 engines have them. Also I think all V6 models have the external transmission oil cooler but I'm not sure of that. The 'HD cooling' difference seems to be one vs. two radiator cooler fans, but I think all Trailhawk models get that with or without the towing package. It's all pretty difficult to sort out.

Correct on all counts. And yes, it is confusing.
