Provided that the car you would trade in is in good working condition, what trade in value is your lowest limit before the car itself would be more valuable to you as another ride in your garage verses a discount on a new car purchase.

I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee that is in great condition, in my humble opinion, but I was offered only $3,000 as a trade in. It does have 140k in miles. To me, it's more valuable as a second car than what I would get in return for a discounted new Cherokee.

What are your thoughts on that?

IMHO if the 3k isn't an issue when pruchasing your new cherokee I would keep as a spare Vehicle. Life is full of surprises and guests and if it's in good condition it would be worth it to keep it or sell to a private party down the line. My aunt and uncle have an 03 GC they are getting 5k for private party but theirs has some issues and they are tired of putting $ into it...

To add to this: I leased my Cherokee Limited II on a 39 month lease. It stickered at just a couple hundred under $40,000. The buy out at the end of the lease is $20,000. My dealer told me he is pretty sure it is going to be worth far more than that and wants the right of first refusal if I don't buy it out myself. It is his opinion that the Cherokee resale value is going to be similar to the Wrangler.

Remember you have to maintain and insure it
That may be more than what a rental costs if needed....
