thoughts on shopping for a car

why wouldn't someone research (a certain feature) BEFORE buying a car, if it's something you want? especially when so many units have (that feature). I don't get it. I had certain criteria for what I wanted. I didn't even look at cars that didn't have those things. was it a high pressured sales situation? ppl really need to take a step back during the buying process. take your time. drive a bunch of cars from different dealers & different manufactures. then make a short list of stuff you want. then keep looking until you find the right vehicle, at the right dealership for the right deal. it's a great way to weed out the bad dealers & focus on what's really important to you. especially when shopping for a preowned car. yes, you might have to make a compromise, for example, I couldn't find a 4cyl w an OEM hitch so I had to add one. but honestly, I thought I was done carrying 4 bikes & wouldn't need it, so it was a grey area & not a must have

glad to remind myself about a cpl things I spouted 7 years ago ... lol

right now I'm feeling a mix of things, such as excitement & wanting to pull the trigger & get on with it & start driving a newer cleaner unit w/ newer features (even tho my current unit's list of features is perfect) also a sense of anxiety that I might be shopping above my pay grade. meaning are my eyes bigger than my wallet? should I just buy a corolla & live in misery?

it's tough to be patient & wait out the search. just last nite I was thinking how I can afford the unit I don't want. need to take a chill pill
Getting dealers to compete against each other is helpful in getting a good deal; even the same brand dealers. There are several Jeep dealers in the Wasatch Front area (Salt Lake City extended) that I had giving me quotes. I told them that they other told me ".....such and such.." and they were competing against each other until I got the best Cherokee deal I thought I could get.
once I find a unit I like, I'm pretty good at working the chair until the dealer comes around w/ their best offer. if it's not the right unit, I don't torture them. I'm ALWAYS ready to walk, even w/ the right unit

I do not do any research, as well. I know what I want, and just go for it. The only thing I research is what my trade in is worth, so that I know what to expect. I also check for any rebates/offers going on at the time. Two years ago, last June, I went to my local FCA Dealer (I only buy from them). I wanted a TH (2014) but they did not have one at the time, and the Salesman tried to get me into another Cherokee. No dice. All of a sudden, I noticed a new Journey Crossroad in Copperhead Pearl. Awesome color. I purchased it instead of trying to find a TH. The thought never occurred to me to order one. I drove it for two years; all the time yearning for a TH. With all the transmission problems written about on the Forum, I am now glad that I waited out the two years! This past August, after many numerous attempts, I built my TH on the Jeep site, and went the final step: assigning to my Dealer. I was pre-approved by Chrysler after I submitted my build. Within an hour both Chrysler and my Dealer were calling me, and I made an appointment to see the Salesman the following Monday. First thing, he asked me if the color would be a deal breaker. I told him Mango Tango, or nothing. He had submitted my build to the Factory; 2017s were being built, and Mango Tango was no longer being offered. So, he had done some researching and found two sitting on other dealer's lots. One had less than I wanted; the other more. I settled on the one with more, not knowing that it had all of the Factory Options except the Remote CD player, which I wanted. Two days later, I was driving my Jeep.
I have done some research on adding the CD player, but I see that the inside of the console is different. My power port and USB port are in the front of the console bin, where the CD player is supposed to be. With the CD player, the ports are moved to the back of the bin. So it may be a tougher job than I originally thought to add the CD player. I'm still working on this.
good lesson. never settle. it will haunt you. thank you

feels weird shopping again. I mean I knew it would happen some day but can't believe it's happening now. kinda like when my old man passed away. knew it would happen but couldn't believe it happened
saw a car the other day that looked cool. looked it up & watched review videos. what a disappointment the 3 cylinder Chevy Trailblazer is
finally got around to checking out the 2014 Sport near me w/ only 18k miles, this weekend. but the dealer wasn't around. the doors were unlocked so I had a leisurely look-see. forgot to pop the hood & look at the engine bay. it's bare bones, nothing like my 2014 Limited. but the interior is so nice & clean. it's got ugly 17" steel wheels, I'll have to swap the lug bolts, of course, no heated steering wheel & seats, no nav, no apple carplay, I guess my sound system (speakers) is better in the Limited? no backup camera, no fog lights, no sunroof, no remote start, requires keys (no FOBs)

almost tempting, but didn't drive it. would certainly swap in a GPS radio & add a backup camera. probably keep the 17" wheels but maybe upgrade the tires
from 225 65 17
to 245 60 17
(due to very similar diameter & they'd be a +2 at the over-sand permit station)

How much are they asking for the Sport ?
$18k same as the mileage, weird huh?
That's a pretty substantial downgrade from your Limited. You'll definitely miss the features that you take for granted, at I know would...😉😎
thank you, don't know what I was thinking. need to stay focused

uh oh, local Toyota dealer suddenly has a ton of pre-owned new arrivals, in my price range. they just popped in, like out of nowhere!
any Cherokee owner, on this forum, that gave an opinion of the Compass, was negative
the one time I sat in a Compass in a showroom, it took about 5 seconds to say to myself "nope". it just doesn't feel as good at the Cherokee
the only negative I've heard about the 2.0T is the sound of the engine revs. when I drove just two of them I thought the car was in the wrong gear. I guess you just get used to it. I need to drive more of them.
but I've been so happy w/ my 2014 2.4 I'm really just looking at preowned Lattitude Plus Trim levels w/ 17" wheels now
I would probably love a 2.0 Limited w/ 18" wheels if I could get used to the sound

took a 1 hour drive to visit a prospective Cherokee (w/only 50k miles). jumped right into a 2017 after riding my 2014. wow what a difference! I remembered why I was originally so excited to buy mine. love the feeling of lightly used suspension components

it had the OEM NAV & it was funny to miss my current aftermarket radio w/ wireless CarPlay. was a good reminder that the essence of the Cherokee isn't all the bells & whistles, it's the ride

was fun digging thru the glove compartment, all the docs from the previous owners. why don't ppl chuck those? I certainly won't be leaving any personal information behind when I say goodbye to mine

ultimately, that's not the car for me, it had crash damage repair that left the DRLs misaligned w/ the front 1/4 panels. worried about water intrusion. but it sure did drive great. would love to get it on some dirt trail rollers & sand dunes

also it had a minor odor, the kind that isn't really bothersome, but might never go away. I think it followed me, into my car, on my clothing, yuk

also the dealer wasn't especially excited about taking mine (203k miles) in on trade. I suggested $5K he suggested $1K ... nope

regarding used cars, contemplating what's more important, age or mileage. for example a car that's older but fewer miles vs the same car that's newer w/ more miles
I’m not sure there is always a clear-cut guideline for it. Mechanics/engineering v Climate/Geography v Driving Usage, etc can really play big roles into which is going to be better for certain vehicles.

Ex. Robust motor and reliable car, then age is less of a factor v lower mileage in my mind. Garaged? Exposed to coercive environmental items such as seasonal road salt? Driven hard? Grandma’s shopping car? Highway miles for simple work commute? Maybe the old adage, knowledge is power in trying to decide something like this with a pre-owned vehicle.
hehe I know, all things are never "equal"
just needed a sanity check, I guess

2014 Cherokee Sport 20k miles. it had some broken stuff
2017 CX5 Grand Select 70k miles. loaded w/ features but doesn't ride like a Cherokee

next up, may be a new Crosstrek 6 Spd MT w/ only 6 miles

is it a bad sign, that the previous owner of a used RAV4, for sale at the brand's dealership, had her AAA card out, on the dash?
