Hey everyone,

If you saw my post a couple weeks ago you know my uConnect 8.4 VP4 NA from my 2014 TH bricked during a software update. Time to replace it. As posted many times on this board there’s basically four options:

Option 1: I could replace my uConnect 8.4 VP4 NA with an identical used unit (probably from eBay) and all I would need is to buy the anti-theft code so the replacement uConnect registers itself to the VIN of my car. This would have cost me about $300 for a used uConnect 8.4 VP4 NA and $10 for a code. This would have gotten me back to where I was before.

Option 2: I could upgrade to one of the newer uConnect system with Car Play/Android Auto (2019+?) but as noted in many posts, you can’t just swap-up as in Option #1. Apparently there’s a company that will do it but it costs over $2k. That’s way too expensive for basically, the same unit just a little better.

Option 3: I could get an iDatalink-compatible radio and iDatalink Maestro box which would allow me to keep all the car’s features AND get Android Auto/Car Play. However, it seems like all the iDatalink-compatible radios are name brand (e.g. Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood etc. ) and the modest-priced ones would be only 7 or 8 inch screens, smaller than what I have now. To go to a 9 or 10 inch screen PLUS the Maestro hardware, harness etc. puts me between $1200-1500. Still too much.

Option 4: Go with an aftermarket Android unit with CANBUS decoder to keep most of my car functions. The unit every seems to have the most success with is the T’EYES CC3. So for about $350 I could get a 10.2 inch screen, Android Auto/Car Play and most of my car’s features would still work.

So in the end I decided on Option 4. Actually, there’s an upgraded version that just came out with an optional 2K Quad HD screen so I got that version in the 64Gb version.

So I’m posting this review to talk about the PROS and CONS I’ve found since replacing my uConnect with the T’EYES CC3 2K as well as fill in the gaps based on some of the videos out there that mention “All the features except the heated steering work” but in the videos, they never actually show it or any of the screens for the Cherokee-specific features. I hope this helps for anyone looking at upgrading to the CC3.

PROs/ CONs:
-----------------------------------------------------------
CON: It’s pretty well documented you will lose your heated steering wheel so if you MUST have a heated wheel, the CC3 is not for you. You don’t (thankfully) lose your heated seats which to me, is more important. As some have posted, if your Cherokee is equipped with the Remote Start package where your heated seats come on when remote starting and it’s <40 degrees outside you can lose that. Some have reported the remote start heated seat feature works after upgrading and others report it doesn’t work. My heated seats stopped working in the remote start mode but do fully work as normal in manual mode including at the two levels, High and Low.

CON: As I mentioned above, there are videos out there that claim “all the features just work” however it wasn't clear if the posters actually checked “all features”. I found a better statement is "most features work". Perhaps the largest missing feature outside the heated steering wheel is the “Retract Parking Brake for Service” option which is required to change your rear brake pads, something every Cherokee owner will need to do at some point. There’s a “Brake” menu under Car Settings but there are no options under it. Without it, you have no way to retract the parking brake to do a rear brake pad/rotor change. If you have AlfaOBD I have found a way around it. I was able to manually enter/exit Maintenance Mode from the EPB module and put the car into Maintenance Mode however if you don’t have AlfaOBD you would need to either (a) have a shop/dealer with OBD II access to the extended FCA functions do your brake job or (b) temporarily put your old radio back to do it. Again, for me I have the AlfaOBD so it’s not an issue but something to be aware of if/when you replace your rear pads.

CON: Learning curve!
  • It takes some time to really understand everything even just how to navigate the interface. There’s literally hundreds of settings and the only instructions are videos on the T’EYES website. I’ve spent about 4-5 hours with it so far and only now starting to get things down comfortably.
  • The unit is from China and apparently the primary customers are in Russia because out of the box, it’s setup for Cyrillic. It took 10 minutes just to figure out how to switch it to English! Some deep menus with seldom/never used settings are still in their original Russian. It’s a little rough around the edges but luckily, everything you need, will use or is car/user-facing is in the language you choose (for me, English)
  • Non-standard icons. Half of the initial learning curve is trying to figure out what some of the unique icons on the CC3 interface do. For example, the Bluetooth icon/symbol is pretty much universal today. Not so on the CC3 though. It’s some never-seen-before icon. It makes it frustrating because you’re looking all over for just how to pair the Bluetooth only to find it’s under an icon you never would have expected it to be. A little frustrating.

CON: Initial sound quality. As mentioned in almost every posting or video, out of the box the unit sounds like CRAP. And that’s no exaggeration. In all honesty, I actually liked the sound of my Cherokee’s uConnect. It was loud and full ranged. To me, the Cherokee speakers are the weak point and many of us have changed those thanks to the abundance of good posts from forum members on the different speaker upgrade options available. The CC3 sound was so bad at first I seriously thought I had made a mistake and should pull the unit. Luckily I took a deep breath and started to adjust the equalizer (EQ) settings as the CC3 videos point out. Once you do it’s a HUGE difference; night and day. There are also a lot more options for Surround Sound, Subwoofer, High-Pass/Low-Pass filtering, Sound Field. Also, the T’EYES wiring harness has RCA outs for those of us who don’t have the 9-speaker (“Alpine”) system and want to add an amplifier to our 6-speaker base system. It’s just amazing how terrible the CC3 sounds out of the box until you EQ it and then it becomes great. It becomes a completely different unit after that.

-----------------------------------------------------------

PRO: Awesome 10.2” glass screen. The 2K model has a gorgeous 2000x1200 resolution and the included custom bezel perfectly matches the Cherokee interior. They really did a great job at making it look like it was a factory option, you would never know it’s not OEM. It’s like having a Tesla-style screen built right into the center of your dashboard. Definite “wow” factor when someone gets into your car.

PRO: Another reason I got the 2K model was that they also upgraded the microphone. Many people reported in the videos/reviews out there that with the original CC3 model when making calls, people had difficulty hearing them with the internal microphone and that it was quiet or wasn’t clear. The CC3 does support adding an external microphone however they advertise they fixed the internal microphone issue in the 2K model. Everyone I’ve called has said it sounded nice and clear and no issue with volume.

PRO: Google Maps!!! (or Waze or whatever navigation app you prefer). The uConnect navigation was probably good when it came out back in 2014 but not today. The low resolution screen means you could never see more than a few streets around your current location, the scrolling was jerky and once they shut down 3G a couple years ago, unless you had one of the newer 4G units, you were screwed. The CC3 2K on the other hand fully supports any of the dozens of navigation/gps apps in high res. and the scrolling/updating is 100% smooth and lightning fast due to the 8-core processor. Night and day difference when compared to the uConnect.

PRO: Sound quality! Now, you may be saying, "Wait???, this was on the list of "CONs??" Well that is BEFORE using the equalizer. Once you EQ the sound to your liking, the CC3 is a whole different head unit and it sounds awesome. It's plenty loud and the 28-band EQ allows you to get the sound just the way you like it. You like lots of bass?? No problem, the T'EYES CC3 has you covered? You like midrange or crystal clear highs? No problem, the EQ has you covered there as well.

PRO: With the exception of the heated steering wheel and remote-auto heated seats/wheel option, all the HVAC controls work. This is probably the most critical function as the Cherokee lacks physical buttons for many of the HVAC controls. So bottom line, the only thing HVAC it appears you lose are the heated steering (any mode – manual or remote start) and heated seats in the remote start mode. Everything else, temperature, blower, all the vent louvers, recirculate/pass through, front and rear defogger/defroster, etc. all work. While I don’t have the vented seat option in my TH, the option is there on the CC3’s screen and I don’t have any reason to believe it wouldn’t work since they are controlled by the Comfort Seat Module where the seat heat elements are plugged into. It was noted in some of the posts, the temperature is displayed in Celsius instead of Fahrenheit. This is true. The actual temperature is correct, it’s just the units of display (‘C’ instead of ‘F’) is wrong.

PRO: Fully supports adding a 4G SIM card (there are two discrete SIM card slots) for mobile data if you’re inclined to buy one and not use your phone as a hotspot. Also, it supports both 2.4 and 5 Ghz WiFi. Note, you will see references to “5G” in the instructions and on the connectors. This is NOT 5G wireless but 5Ghz WiFi. It’s just bad labeling.

PRO: Android Auto & Car Play! I’m an Android user. My kids all have iPhones. Everyone’s happy.

PRO: Support for the OEM external amp for 9 speaker “Alpine” sound systems. The interface includes an “AMP” on/off button and CANBUS settings if you have the uConnect external amp (the one behind the glove box).

PRO: Plenty of memory to store music, videos etc. so I don’t need to stream from my BT-connected phone. Also, I can load up a USB flash drive and use that for more movies for road trips if I wanted. The CC3 comes with 3 additional USB connectors so you can run them into the glove compartment or by the kick panels so they’re not dangling out in the open if you want while still leaving the Media Hub and USB in the center armrest available. The additional USB’s also can charge phones so you could charge up to 5 devices simultaneously (the media hub, the center console and the three CC3 USB connectors).

PRO: Customizing. This really is just more a feature of the Android o/s than the CC3 itself but you can add a background logo, customize the screen look and feel, etc.

PRO: Plug and Play. The CC3 comes with a Cherokee-compatible wiring harness. The only thing extra to purchase (and I’d recommend it) is a $8 cable on Amazon to convert your factory GPS cable over to the screw-type found on the back of the unit. They do include a GPS receiver and you could snake the wire through your dash, up the pillar and to the windshield but to me, to save $8 bucks it’s not worth it. Just get the cable adapter and you can use your existing GPS receiver at the top of your windshield. (GPS adapter for Cherokee/T’EYES CC3: Amazon.com )

PRO: The backup camera, fully works, but there is a downside. With the high-resolution screen the camera image is poor. You’ll be able to see clearly enough for its purpose but I may this summer run a new rear backup camera so I get a nice, wide clear view but that’s just me. I’m an upgrade junkie

PRO: Lastly, the unit is advertised as years 2015-2018. I’m not sure about 2019+ but I can say it fully works in my 2014. Perhaps they didn’t have a way to test it in a 2014 but it works fine on a 2014 KL.

Good morning, thanks for the info. It just so happened that I went to do a firmware update and it errors out each time. I did the factory reset before the firmware update attempt, checked that my USB drive is formatted to FAT32, tried two different USB drives, but no luck. I have sent an email to Dan awaiting his response. I had no issues in the past doing firmware updates, so this is a bit intriguing.

New audio issue after latest firmware update:

I've had the CC3 in my 2015 Jeep Cherokee KL for about a year. Two issues cropped up recently. The last image on the Teyes backup camera remained displayed for about 50 seconds after using reverse. While diagnosing the issue I found my Teyes dashcam was not functioning also. I updated to the latest firmware which fixed my backup camera issue. I think the dash cam succumbed to the hot sun, not sure. I emailed Dan and he has agreed to replace the dash cam.
After dropping the cam off at the post office I got back in the car and received a text. Volume was a bit low (still tweaking after new firmware) so I went to volume leveler to make adjustments. Not much changed so I tried rebooting thinking it required it possibly after making the changes. After reboot, no audio at all, from anything!

Got home and pulled it from the dash to check connections. Unplugged - re-plugged etc. Reattach power, booted up and same thing, no audio. It was around 100 deg. today and I was sweating bullets in my garage, so I decided to take a break. Went back to it a few hours later and voila! Audio works!
Wondering if anybody has experienced this and if it could be related to heat?

I have heat-related issues from my non-T'EYES dashcam. If it's been in the sun too long, it thermally shuts off until it cools down similar to how a laptop computer, if running hot and the fan can't keep it cool, will get flaky until it finally just shuts off. Let it cool down and it comes back on fine. Note in the T'EYES website there's a specific patch regarding "JEEP / No Audio". There's no additional information so Dan may need to fill in the dots on when it's needed. Here's two links to check out to see if this matches what you described.

Jeep Audio Fix - T'EYES

QuestionL
Do you have BOTH the T'EYES backup cam and the USB windshield cam?? If so, how is the clarity of the backup cam (it's supposed to be 1080p, right? )

Also if you have the dash cam, is it USB? What app do you use on the CC3 to access it? I'm trying to figure out whether to get it and mount it in my grill as, say, a front parking cam. Does it just plug into the T'EYES and "work"?

I have not touched my firmware since I installed the unit. Whatever it came on has been working properly for the most part so I am afraid of touching it and risking any issues. I've read of issues with bluetooth not working after an update because the config file was missing information about the BT adapter so I just feel comfortable using what works.

I know I have had occasional minor issues with audio not working. Maybe once every 50 times I turn my car on the audio will not work at all, whether it is Sirius, Google maps or local files etc. I found that when this happens I simply have to reboot the head unit (not turning the car off, just reboot from the power options) and after the reboot everything will work fine. This has been one of my only few minor issues, the other being that sometimes when I am driving, it will seem like the head unit randomly opens an app on it's own. Sometimes it's the BT phone app and gives me a dial pad to enter a number and other times it will open the video player app and start playing the last item I had played on there but these have been fairly minor problems and I haven't wanted to risk touching the firmware.

I was actually interested in updating the FW because I had read about a new FW giving the option to disable the internal mic and only use an external one, however looking into further, apparently there is a new CC3 unit they started making earlier this year which has a different back design and motherboard and you can only disable the microphone on that model, where as mine would require me to desolder the mic or do other things so I did not follow through with the update because I feel like they just bring more/other headaches with them.

I hope you're able to resolve your issues. I have still been happy with mine and would still recommend it, especially even more so now that apparently there's a new model where you can disable the microphone instead of having to physically break it which just seems beyond ridiculous to me.

#132 ·
Mine is fine, no issues at all. I'm just expanding it with things the stock uConnect 8.4 couldn't support (e.g. 1080p back-up cam, 2nd front-facing camera, etc.)

And my unit actually is one of the newer ones, the CC3 2K. I got it about 4 months ago right after they introduced it. The fan is internal to the case and yes, I can disable the microphone in software and use an external mic (no need to remove the built-in mic). You probably know this but you can buy a 2K screen for your original CC3 to bring it to 2K resolution if you want. I can attest it's super sharp but, after having it, I have to say that for a car, it's overkill. In the end, have I every watched a 2K movie or wanted to see YouTube in 2K in my car?? No. Also, at 2K the fonts are smaller so for older eyes like mine, it's harder to read small text by default (I increased the font size to compensate but again, I wouldn't say the 2K is make-or-break feature. The original screen is already so nice it's a huge improvement on the stock uConnect or any 3rd party ones that have smaller 7/8/9" screens).

My intention to update to the latest firmware was to correct an issue with my backup camera, which it did fix. However I'm not sure if the new firmware caused my loss of audio, or is related to heat (it's been over 100° here) or simply a coincidence.
I do agree, if things are working correctly, why mess with it?
I do like to tinker however, even though it can cause issues there is always something to be learned.

Change the DPI on the T'EYES CC3

Here's a new trick for old eyes like mine. On the T'EYES you can actually adjust the dpi of the screen to make everything larger/smaller similar to how on MS Windows you can adjust your screen resolution for larger or smaller monitors.

Follow the steps below. Depending on your model of CC3 (2k screen or non-2k screen), set the DPI to your preference. Good numbers are below.

960 dpi - This is the default on the CC3 2K screen. Fits a lot on the screen but for older eyes, some fonts and images may be too small.
-------------------------------------------------------
685 dpi - This is the default on the CC3 regular screen. This is a great option if you want larger fonts and images on a 2K screen model.
-------------------------------------------------------
480 dpi - This is a great option if you want larger fonts and images on a non-2K model. On a 2K screen, it's very large (maybe someday when the eyes are really bad) 😂

Hi @Mvanmol , Do you have a CC3 or CC2? The CC3 has an RCA harness that plugs into connector "L". It has RCA outputs (for going to an external amp) and subwoofer out. You can use that to go to your subwoofer. I have a RockPort Ghost v2 spare tire subwoofer that can use this output [RCA] or I can tap into the rear speaker lines.

I think some folks have added an external 1080p camera and run new wires to their head unit (on AliExpress, there's a Cherokee license plate lamp that has an integral camera holder molded into the plastic bezel).

I purchased a 1080p AHD camera which I'm going to try later this month to actually mount into my existing Cherokee camera spot to see if the existing wiring can be used (I have the schematic showing the pin-outs to the wiring. All the necessary wires are there, it's a matter of tapping into the master harness at the back of the radio. When replacing the head unit with, for example, the T'EYES CC3 2k (which is a high res, 2k screen), the stock CVBS camera (with its 420 lines of resolution) doesn't take advantage of the high resolution screen.

How is the sound quality of hands free calling on this unit? I've read the older 1080 CC3 had internal mic issues and the quality of sound was bad (muffled sounding) for the person on the other end of the call. I watched a review of a person who compared the previous generation CC3 to the 2K and they said the newer one was better. But i'd like to hear reviews from more people here.

#158 ·
I have the 2k. The audio quality with the built-in mic is good. After installing it I called friends and asked about the quality and all said they could hear me no problem.

I did later plug in a cheap $3 AliExpress external mic and like with any external mic, it was even better.

So in summary, yes, there were reports of the older CC3 not having the best mic pickup. The 2k (which I have) seems to have solved that. But like with most systems, an external mic is best (same as with the stock Cherokee uConnect, the microphone is in the rear view mirror)

Hi @Gmancan,

Let's look at those two items, (a) sound quality and (b) heated seats, separately;

(a) Yes, the sound quality at first will be Terrible and I mean "Terrible" with a capital "T". (actually, I used the word "CRAP" to describe it in my review ;) but same thing) It took me a couple days tweaking the EQ to get it sounding the way I wanted it. Right now you're probably thinking, "This piece of @#$$%!!!!". I know, the same happened to me (and probably most who heard the sound initially after installing) but it WILL get better. From other reviews I read, everyone goes through the same thing.

The EQ is very sensitive in that a little movement makes a big change so when comparing to other EQ's I used in the past where you can move the slider quite a distance to change the tone, with the T'EYES you need to move each frequency band very little and then A/B the sound. If I recall correctly, it took me a couple days of adjusting it bit by bit to get it just the way I liked it. (yes, I recall after 2 -3 hours thinking, "This has to be broken. It shouldn't be taking this long to get a decent sound!!" , but the T'EYES just does but there WILL be a light at the end of the tunnel. Keep going at it. Try different material that you listen to and A/B and tweak as you go along. See screenshots below of how I have mine set (of course, each person's preference will vary but this is an example of what I like)

(b) The seat heat should work so there's something that's off. (note, I don't know if anyone has tried the vented seats yet but let's see why the heat is not working first then it might solve the vented along with it). Did you set the car settings to be as follows for your Cherokee? Also, check that your CANBUS box update is relatively recent. (at least 2023).

Make sure your CANBUS update is a relatively recent release. (2023)

Choose "Cherokee 5 (XP)"

Speaker upgrade does wonders as well. We don't have the greatest speakers in our Cherokees to begin with. I have the Alpine Premium 9 Speaker system, and even those were 💩. I replaced the door speakers with REAL Alpine R Series, and some Pioneer speakers in the dash and rear pillars. Difference of night and day...😎

I don't see the HVAC control app for my Cherokee 5 2014 with the knobs below the radio. So I have no way to turn on the footwell vent and dash/footwell mix. An HVAC display used to pop up, but no longer does. There were no options to change any a/c options, it only displayed the current settings. Help finding the HVAC controls would be greatly appreciated. I've also factory reset after the latest Dec 2023 update. -T'eyes CC3 2K -Fully updated software as of December 2023 -Set canbus correctly as directed by T'eyes and in this forum: XP-Jeep-Cherokee-XP(L)

Hi Robert,

Welcome to the Forum!

1. Did you set the CANBUS control to Jeep Cherokee as shown

Image

once done,

2. Go to Settings --> Factory --> Code: 168 --> Original Car Agreement --> A/C information ON/OFF --> Toggle to the Right

Image

3. Then the following:
Image

4. You should now have a snowflake icon that brings up the HVAC screen.

HI @Liverpoolfan44,

This Forum is for the regular Cherokee (KL platform), not the Grand Cherokee (WK2) which while sharing the same, is a completely different vehicle in many its systems. To confirm, you purchased the T'EYES CC3 for a Grand Cherokee, correct? If so, (a) did you check on the T'EYES website under the CC3/Grand Cherokee purchase page? They include things that are car-model specific on each car's page of features that do or do not work for that particular model so the customer knows before purchase. For example on our regular Cherokees they note that the heated steering wheel will not work. Was there anything posted about the park sense system? And (b), a small speaker shown below was included (or at least it's included in the regular Cherokee pacakage). Did you plug this in? I think this is for "system sounds" like beeps, dings etc. (non-"audio" sound)

Hi All, thx for all the great advice, I’ve got mine installed now and it works really well except for two minor issues: 1. Every time I start the car, the volume is too loud and I have to quickly turn it down. I’ve found the default volume setting and configured it, but it doesn’t make any difference. Did any of you have this issue on your KL? 2. The AC controls on the screen are reversed. So when I hit the right hand side physical button on the dash, within the Teyes it shows the left hand side being changed. I live in Australia and our steering wheel is on the right hand side of the car so maybe that changes things? thx for any help.

Hi @justin.m.simmons,

Welcome from NY to the Forum!

1. There are a couple settings regarding intial volume. If I recall, one was a "toggle" (soft switch of course) and the other was labeled "gain" or "power (volume)" or something like that. Best bet is to go through the screens, especially System, Device and Factory(the one with the 168 code). My radio doesn't come on with my Cherokee (though I don't often have it on when I turn the car off previously) and either way, it's at the same volume I leave it at.

2. Yes, for RHD models, it will be reversed. T'EYES discloses that along with any other limitations (e.g. the Heated Steering Wheel isn't supported) on their webpage before purchase. See screenshot below:

Hey, Gary
I'm just getting ready to instal the cc3 2k into our '14 Limited. I've watched all the videos and read a lot of forums (this one is the best!) to get comfortable with the project. One thing I don't understand - why is there a speaker included in the kit? I see it in your photo of all the cables etc. but it wasn't identified like the rest.
So what is it's purpose - can it be left out?

Regards, Martin

#177 ·
That speaker is for system noises that come from radio functions. For example, if your Cherokee has the optional Backup Parking monitor it beeps as you get closer to an object behind you, that's a system-sound so it would come from that speaker as opposed to audio (hi-fidelity you listen to that comes through the amp/car dash & door speakers). Truthfully, I didn't hook up that speaker in my install because my 2014 TH doesn't have any option that makes a system sound (that I'm aware of).

Does anyone have the bird 360 camera installed? We had a place professionally install our CC3 2K 128 GB with 360 surround view (birds eye). And it's seriously been one of the worst customer experiences of my life. The guy doesn't even look at you when you're talking to him and then he says I have no idea I didn't install it my worker did. We've taken it back and told them to fix it because it doesn't even seem like the cameras are calibrated at all. We also had them make the side cameras come on the screen when you use your turn signals. You don't see anything close to what it should look like. Looks like it's off by about 10 feet and the other vehicle is driving sideways down the road.

So frustrating. Anyone else have one of these 360 cameras? At this point if this con artist audio place can't fix it we're just going to rip it out and try to sell it on eBay or something and put in an Alpine or Pioneer with a simple backup camera. My wife and I have both lost our patience. The guy has had the vehicle for 3 months. Which isn't a big deal because it's a Florida car for us and we are there all the time. But he should at least be able to fix the damn thing and install it correctly.

Sorry for the long rant. It's just been infuriating beyond belief

HI @Achilles, I only have the regular CC3 2k (non-360 version) in my Cherokee and I haven't actually seen any postings on the Forum yet of anyone who does have the 360 version however I do recall there's a strict calibration process that needs to be done once the cameras are installed for it to display correctly. I'll see if I an find some info. It sounds though like your issue is not with TEYES or the unit but your installer so I'm not sure what you would think would be different with an Alpine or Pioneer. If these folks are screwing up your install, buying a different unit isn't going to make them install one of them any better. I'm missing your train of thought on this...

ps: Note also, if all you want is to use the stock Cherokee backup camera now (e.g. you don't want to do the 360), the TEYES does that out of the box normally. My stock backup camera works with my TEYES unit without any of the other 360 cameras (note, the assumption here is that you actually have a Cherokee with a stock camera but I think most came with one except the Sport trim)

Gary, in post #184 pic, I see a Heated Steering Wheel icon at bottom center. Is that feature now available? (I thought that wasn't available yet) or is the button just "spacing-saving" for "future use"?
Thx
