So I bought a paint thickness meter to test the paint on my vehicle after an accident I had. The body shop gave me a new hood and then painted it and blended the paint into the fenders. They had said that the paint on the hood was thicker than factory paint. Well I determined that to be a lie.

Based on my paint thickness meter, the paint on my vehicle seems to be around 5-7 mils generally speaking. However the new hood is only 3.5-5 mils. The fenders which were blended show 7-12mils which is expected after them painting over the existing paint.

I'm glad I checked this since I know now that the paint on the hood is quite thin and I have to be careful when it comes to buffing and polishing. (ignore the numbers on the picture they don't represent anything in particular).

Pretty sure it was just one pass of clear. I think they do one pass of color, and one pass of clear at most body shops. They still charged me $600 in paint! That's just the paint, not the labor...

Also I had it polished and put paint protection film over it so I should be ok. The ppf lasts 10 years so I should never need to do a full polish again. Maybe just a spot check here or there if I ever need the ppf replaced (which I hope never happens since it costs over $500 just to cover the hood). The ppf I had put on is also 8 mils so with that it is minimum 11.5mils down to the bare metal.
