Stop/Start not restarting and leaving me stranded at light

2015 TH. I've had this happen 4 times now. It's not super frequent, but when it does it's ridiculous. I take my brake off and go to leave a stop light when it turns green, but the engine does not restart. I have to put it in park and restart the engine. Sometimes it puts the parking brake on too. Meanwhile I'm stopping traffic and pissing everyone off while I try and figure out how to get my car going again. Anyone had this problem before? :-/

I'd take it in and get it fixed. Then I would turn it off. If you ask me the start/ stop thing would just be a pain in the ass. Glad I don't have it. Just my opinion though.

WTF? Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I'm not happy about it. Truth be told it's only happened the few times out of hundreds of times the engine has turned off and back on, but even one time is too many for something like this! Do you plan on taking yours to the dealer?

Take it in .. but ask if they have encountered it with others just to know how they plan on fixing it. It would be good information to share with us.

It works very well for me and I still don't like it. I don't want my engine shutting down and then the moment it's restarted I'm instantly accelerating. If I was sitting in a severe traffic jam where we're bumper to bumper crawling along I might activate it then.

Im sure sooner or later someone will come along and post a fix for it to be disabled permanently. I doubt mine will be getting used much in the next few weeks anyway looking at the weather forecast .

There's a button on the dash , but turns itself back on when you restart the car. , I wouldn't worry about it , I think it's a great feature when it's working properly I'm getting nearly 21 nearly all city driving on a 700 mile engine .

The feature can be made to work properly. I don't have it on my '14 TH, but I had a loaner car from the BMW dealer last week that did. I had read a number of professional reviews that were complaining about it, but I thought it was generally not obtrusive, much better than I was expecting.

So when I took it in there was a PCM update they did that supposedly should fix my issue. So far, so good, but it was always an intermittent problem, so we'll see. I even tried to deliberately engage this fail state by having the engine start immediately after it stopped, but it came on fine.

I also had them do the transmission flash, update, re-learn while it was there and they also performed this recall work.

I have not experienced this issue. It has restarted every single time. That definitely sounds like an issue that you should take in and have the dealer look at. It is not normal for the ESS to do that.

I already took it in if you see my post above. Not sure if the PCM update will fix that or not, but we'll see. So far it hasn't happened again, but it was very rare that it happened in the first place.

First, I got a letter from Jeep to do P56 reprogram, and got the vehicle fixed yesterday. I can tell you it feels more "car like", no lag, and responsive.
They also did "RRT 14 086 - Flash PCM, Perform Update", under Emissions category I have no idea what this is. One thing I've noticed is the ESS, not sure if this is related to the P56 Recall and/or Flash PCM. ESS is now activated less often, after one stop/start the screen shows Stop/Start not active Battery Charging. It took a while for ESS to be ready and activate again at traffic light stop. This may be a good thing since I have had the ESS not working right a few times. Another note is I was driving under -11C degree. So I guess in summer, ESS will work more often than in winter.

Yeh, mine has been doing the same since it got cold, and I have not had P56 or any other flash done. You're probably okay.

Yeah Ive not had S/S work for about two weeks now because of the cold weather .

I hate that Start/Stop feature. I'll hit the off button every time I start her up before I put her in gear. Wish there was a way to permanently disable it!

My wife`s Cherokee did the same, took it to the dealer, they found nothing wrong, when stopped they told her to keep at least one hand on the steering wheel when stop & go is active, their are sensors in the steering wheel, and if you take both hands off the the steering wheel it will disengage the stop & go.
Been working great now.

@2010renegade - That IS very interesting. The condition you describe may go further than just "disengaging" the Stop/Start. Consider this in the ESS section of the owners manual that gives conditions that apply EPB:

Conditions That Force An Application Of The Electric
Park Brake While In Autostop Mode:

• The drivers door is open and brake pedal released.
• The drivers door is open and the drivers seat belt is
unbuckled.
• The engine hood has been opened.
• A STOP/START system error occurs.
If the Electric Park Brake is applied with the engine off,
the engine may require a manual restart and the electric
park brake may require a manual release (depress brake
pedal and press Electric Park Brake switch).

If keeping a hand on the steering wheel completely solves the problem, then the owners manual should be updated because that requirement is not listed.

Does your wife's Cherokee have LaneSense? That's the only system I know of so far that monitors hands on wheel.

I just bought 2015 Latitude two days ago. Only been driven 100 miles or so. I was leery from the get-go about the start/stop function. Almost did not buy because of this but once I read that it can be disabled I was ok with that. However you need to disable it every time you start up. Is there no way to disable permanently?

Read somewhere that if you leave the fan on the S/G feature won't work. Not sure if the fan stays on after a restart but if it does that might do it. Worth a try...

I guess I should update this thread. Problem never came back once after PCM update.
