In January I will be relocating to Burlington, Vermont. What should I be considering, if anything, in the way of snow tires. I am just looking to get around town, not adventuring into the wilderness. Thanks for your input.

Check with your dealer on snow tires. You have a 4x4 so should not need anything too agressive but, if legal in your area, studs would be an added safety feature on slippery roads and ice. - Ted

daughter started college there this fall, nice area, love the roads, watch out for 89 tho lots of ppl obsessed with going over 100mph for some reason. back to your question, they drive fast in VT so I would lean toward performance tires or Bridgestone Blizzaks (they are good at highway speed and not noisy) over aggressive like Firestone Winterforce

for entertainment you might check out the craigslist for snow tires in VT. our sizes can be hard to find but I found more in VT than in MA. wut size you running now?

I got Michelin X-ice from Tirerack.com. I had good experience with them in the past. Overall the winter tires are not for adventures. They have much better traction and much shorter braking distances at cold temperatures compared to all season. So even when just driving around town it's worth having them. the added cost is not very high as you don't run down the stock tires as fast.

I got also aluminum wheels from tirerack. I'm not to excited about the look but they are ok. I will remove the blue protective foil from the wheel hubs when I have time.

I am currently running 225/60 R18 all weather tires. I see you have gone to 17's. A choice, or are you replacing size for size?

I kinda like those wheels but thinking black might look best with the mango. Do they make in black? And, what brand are they?

Do you really have *all weather tires* or all seasons ? Big difference, because the newer *all weather tires* are winter rated with the snow flake symbol. Tests show they do pretty well on snow and ice, though not quite as well as dedicated winters.
@andialpha has a Trailhawk, so the 17s are standard size. Only the Limiteds and Altitudes have 18" wheels.
In your case, you could save a little bit of money by going with 225/65/17 tires on 17" wheels ; those would have the exact same height and width as your 225/65/18 tires. Just mention you need thin wheel weights to the person who will eventually install and balance the tires on 17" wheels (clearence with front brake calipers is tight with most aftermarket 17" wheels).

They are from tirerack and they call them sport edition P5 but they don't give a specific brand. I had them shipped directly to a NTB for putting them on my car. I didn't bother with collecting the paperwork that came with them so I don't know the brand. In hindsight a mistake of course.

Tirerack seems to have no black version. They looked a bit darker on their website. I would have preferred them darker but not black because salt shows on full black too much. A dark grey would have been best but as said they turned out a bit to light. But it's ok. They will look dirty most of the winter anyway.

Thanks for the follow up info! Yeah, a darker gray would be nice but you are right, in winter they will have their own color.

About those wheels :
Sport Edition Wheels

Little may be known about Sport Edition Wheels, but you can be sure these wheels can compete with the best-known customized wheels in the market. Sport Edition is one of Tire Rack's in-house brands, offering customized wheels by Japanese manufacturer Kosei. Its wheels are less expensive than most of its aftermarket counterparts, but offer improved quality and durability. Kosei uses a series of strict quality tests to make sure each Sport Edition wheel delivers reliable performance. Its wheels are produced using advanced low-pressure casting processes. The wheel's rim, disc, and spokes are tested separately for strength, air retention, and resistance to cracking and deformation. Prior to the wheels' release in the market, Kosei ensures each Sport Edition wheel meets quality standards set by TUV Rheinland, an internationally accredited technology testing association. But aside from their topnotch quality, the best part about Sport Edition Wheels is the wide variety of designs and finishes they come in. Glossy black, machined, stainless steel, polished chrome, silver, grey.you name it and, chances are, Sport Edition's got it. Whatever car you're driving, you'll surely find a wheel design that perfectly complements your car's looks. Sport Edition gives you the chance to customize your car at a more affordable price, proving that you don't need to spend a lot of bucks for a set of elegant, attractive wheels for your ride. More importantly, these wheels are guaranteed to help you enjoy smooth vehicle performance for a long time. Check out Auto Parts Warehouse and get a set of these wheels today.

last February during one of our last college visits, the wind chill was 30 below zero. we saw one guy riding his bike in traffic. we walked the campus. we survived but it was way more comfortable indoors. maybe this winter won't be as bad. daughter has geared up with hats long coats gloves boots etc. I learned quickly that men wear knit watchman style hats with a hood, not either or but both

Finally bolted on my snow tires. Got the cheapest 18" alloys I could find (~$405) and some Toyo Observe GSi-5's off ebay for $436 in 235/60/R18 (stock altitude/limited size). I'm not crazy about the look (makes the TH look more city-fied) but driving around feels the same. No real difference in noise to my ears and not anymore squishy than the Firestone A/Ts. Would have preferred to stick with 17's but a friend said they had a set of 18" Blizzaks I could have for cheap so I ordered the wheels. Tires turned out to be unusable and it would have cost too much to return the wheels so I found a deal on 18" tires.

I was cruising around on the A/Ts in snow mode and the car did fine for the most part. I live in a town with lots of roundabouts and at an elevation that sees a lot of melt and then refreezing. I was looking for better ice traction. I also take on a mountain pass regularly. A snowflake rated tire is definitely an improvement in all winter conditions.

I think I could have gotten on just fine with 4x4 and the A/Ts. I just thought for what comes out to a couple hundred bucks a year it was worth the extra security. We have a couple of other cars that we run studless on too. Wife also drives the Jeep with the kids so I wanted them to have the safest setup.
