I have to give you the disclaimer first, I will be leaving my Jeep at home for this trip. I'm planning a motorcycle ride around Maine in June with a tent, sleeping bag, and my brother.

Roughly leaving (north of) Boston, heading to Acadia, maybe Moosehorn, Baxter, and something on the west border before heading into NH to the White Mountains.

Thoughts on:
1. The destinations
2. What scenic stops should I make?
3. What roads/routes should I hit?

I do envy you as I owned land in Brooklin, Maine from about 1963 and moved there from '67 to '79. I ran pretty well all over the state in off- road and highway motorcycles (BMW), Land Rovers and cars. I recall that Hwy 9 from Bangor to Calais was a great ride with two other buddies on bikes. Also the run north from Skowhegan on Hwy 2 to Rangeley and Colebrook, NH was a great trip as well. I'd tell you more but I don't have a decent map of Maine and my memory is not what it used to be. Best of luck with the trip but be sure to keep the rubber side down, and watch out for deer! They can really mess up a bike and rider! - Ted

Calais (or very close to it) is on the list. If you recommend venturing that way I will add it to the itinerary. I'm looking for a good entry point from ME to NH, and either north by Colebrook or south by Berlin. I'll definitely be watching out for deer, but looking for Moose. I have yet to see one in the wild.

Definitely take the Route 1 up until you hit Acadia. Stop in Camden and Boothbay. Also, depending on timing from when you hit the road, stop at the Harraseeket Lobster Pound for lunch or dinner in Freeport http://www.harraseeketlunchandlobster.com/

In NH, the kangamangus highway is one of my favorites.

Have to agree on the Kankamangus. Used to go to North Conway, NH to climb the cliffs there; rock climbing in the summer and ice in the winter, but I was younger and crazier then! If I were you I'd head to Colebrook via Rangeley on the return trip from the Canadian border. It is a great run on a bike. And you've got to ride the road up Mount Washington while in NH. Dammitall, I wish I was 40 years younger and going with you! - Ted

The Kangamangus is a great ride, and one I do a couple times a year on a day trip. Halfway through you cut north to Bear Notch Rd and loop around. Great country up there.

Rangeley is on the list, and Colebrook was also mentioned. that looks like a great place to start heading south and camp in the white mountains.
