shaky hood

I tried a search, so please forgive me if this has been beaten to death.
At highway speeds,(>65 mph) my 2019 Trailhawk's hood shakes up and down a bit. Is that normal? It is latched and there is no vibration elsewhere from the car. It doesn't seem to cause any problem.

It sounds to me like you might want to adjust the latch downward ever so slightly. The easiest way, I believe, is to take out one or two of the grille covers; this should allow you to adjust and tighten the latch with the hood closed. My latch was a bit misaligned when I bought the car, and that's what I ended up doing when I adjusted it.

I just screwed mine out more, as I could easily push
down on the hood in the corners. Going to see if it
works. Also now the adjusters sit about 1" high...

FWIW I've never noticed this on my 14, maybe more of an issue with the lighter hood?

The 2019 rear hatch is composite, not metal as before. AFAIK the hood hasn’t changed. The hood myth began by very poor journalism where the reporters stated that the “new” aluminum hood was part of the 150 weight reduction between the 2018 and 2019. It wasn’t.

Not entirely true. The hood is significantly different in shape, and they could have squeezed a few ounces out of the new design.

Previous MOPAR P/N: 68103664AC
New MOPAR P/N: 68290450AA

Some of the reports certainly make it sound like the aluminum part is new, but most read that the hood is new, and also made of aluminum. Very easy to misinterpret.

I bought my '19 Trailhawk and immediately hit the road for a 6 hour drive. At highway speeds the shaking is very noticeable-- especially as the sun and clouds reflect overhead. I had to pull over at a rest stop to check the fastening to be sure. Good to know I'm not hypersensitive/paranoid to this.

Well, something must be different. It doesn't take Columbo to figure out that all complaints about the hood shaking are coming from 2019 model year owners, not the other five model years. The hood is either lighter, shaped differently, installed improperly or a combination of the three.

...and the 2014 - 2019 Cherokee has aluminum hoods. Most news reports (some very misleading) say the 2019 has "a new lightweight aluminum hood". Can't argue with that. It is shaped differently and has a different part number, so it is probably a gram or two lighter. See https://jeepcherokeeclub.com/2870908-post14.html

Yep.

Mine visibly shook on the highway on the way home from the dealership. I may or may not have let out a loud 4-letter word.

After reading through the forum, playing with/tweaking the adjustable support screws under the hood solved my problem. Once you realize that they're adjustable for a reason, it makes sense. Not all adjustable screws will be protruding at the same length when you have the right fit - it's kind of a custom thing.

Good luck!

When your hood is closed;
Push on the front bumper by the grill. On the passenger side and on the driver side. If the hood is moving/there is play between the hood and its bumper stops this will make your hood feel like its going to open while your driving.

I just had a similar experience when I had my vehicle returned from a windshield replacement. The hood was not aligned properly when they re-installed it, the bumper stops for the hood were not doing anything. I also had some minor rubbing occurring.

To resolve bring it to the dealership. Or just back off the bolts on the hood (just a enough for movement), close the hood, align it as best you can, carefully open the hood, and then re torque the nuts, and adjust the bumper stops until there is no play and it sits nice and flush with the fender panels.

My 2cents.

All the best,
Alex

Thanks guys, I have the same issue. In my case the ESS light came on when an oncoming semi caused a wind blast against my hood. I opened and closed the hood and no more issues but the the hood shakes a lot at highway speed. I will try to adjust but I think my dealer will need to fix this.

At first I thought that I would have to live with this. Glad it can be fixed. Thanks for this.

Adjust, but if you over-adjust you might take it off completely. If you take it off completely you might drop it in the engine compartment. If you drop it in the engine compartment you might not ever see it again. If you never see it again you might have to order one online. $1.60 + shipping.

...not that I would know or anything.
