Never a Jeep Again

I purchased at 2016 Jeep Cherokee. I have never been so unhappy about a vehicle in my life. I have the same service shifter message and RPDN all red. they are telling me because my VIN is not included in the recall list it's not covered under my warranty. Jeep needs a class action lawsuit. To top it off my trunk liftgate has stopped working too....I had this car less than 2 years (11/2016) and purchased the extended warranty no reason i should pay $1600.00 for repairs.

Very sorely disappointed in Jeep and their handling of this situation. I have a 2017 Cherokee Latitude. Problem happened when the car was about a year old. They said the issue was the harness assembly for the shifter (my apologies if I get mechanical stuff incorrect). They had my car a week while waiting for the part because so many people were having the issue. Less than a year later, the same issue. Again, dealer has my car for a week saying that Jeep came out with a new improved replacement for the part. Now, 2 months later the part has failed again. I have opened a case with NHTSB (there are many many cases there) and I have opened a case with Jeep. I was told point blank that there is no buy back because the car is over 2 years old & I'm in NJ. Mind you, there was no way for me to know this would be an ongoing chronic issue with my car. Now waiting for Jeep to schedule to get this fixed yet again. How can this be that Jeep is well aware of the issue and doing nothing to make it right? They seem to be waiting for a major accident or death to do anything. It's unforgivable. I'm stuck with this car for many years to come. I thought I was buying my dream car....now it's just a nightmare.

Just got the "Service Shifter" message on the 2017 Trailhawk I purchased two days ago. I watched the odometer hit 28,000 miles while driving to work 1.5 hours ago and right afterward the shifter message popped up. I parked at work and have not been back to the vehicle since, so we'll see if it's gone after my shift. I'm still under the 3 year bumper-to-bumper warranty until late November fortunately (though wouldn't this technically be considered power train?), so I'm hoping the dealer I bought it from can repair it quick and free, and permanently. We'll see. Was hoping the Jeep certified pre-owned warranty wouldn't have to be tapped into, but judging by the amount of results I got when looking into the problem I'm afraid my TH will be in the shop more often than not.

The worst part is, I bought a 2018 Latitude Plus BRAND NEW last year and loved it. Wife and I honeymooned to CO in it in June. It handled Pike's Peak, hundreds of miles of mountain roads, and everything between there and our home in WI without a single hiccup. Had 20,900 miles on it in August when a dump truck plowed into the line of cars we were in on the interstate. Total loss. After dealing with all the insurance and considering different vehicles, I went with another KL because I loved my 2018 so much. My wife's 2014 Patriot has 170,000 miles on it and zero issues.

I really hope Jeep makes this right.

I have had the Service Shifter problem and resultant electronic failures for more than two years, intermittently. We have spent more than $2000 out of pocket. Our 2014 Grand Cherokee will go months with no sign of a problem and then it happens again. We have chased down our dealer, we have gone through Jeep Care Specialists, we have done everything we can short of hiring a lawyer. We have read the lemon law, and it seems that isn't a great route either. More lawyer expenses because Chrysler will fight it. Jeep has not done the right thing, the dealer has not cooperated with us at all, and there had been NO RESOLUTION. Very frustrating. Shame on Jeep and the dealers representing you. Good luck to the person above to whom Jeep has "reached out."

If you can't find the Service Record that shows the latest parts were used then you will have to gain access to the shifter and visually inspect the parts.
The dealers VIP report should have the answer.

Flo100 has a great Post with pictures so you can determine if you have the old or new bezel and harness.

2014 Trailhawk - just dropped off @dealership for same issue

After getting the Service Shifter message in my Jeep this morning, I opened a case for this with Jeep before dropping it off for the required diagnostic that I'm on the hook for if Jeep doesn't fix this issue for me. I'm hoping to have a better experience than most have had here with getting this permanently fixed the first time and handled with great customer service by Jeep. I'll keep you all posted. My Jeep was in the shop for a repair and a recall just 3 weeks ago. $$$

Had this problem in my 2018 Cherokee. The service shifter warning came on serval times about 7 months ago. I took it to the dealer they said they couldn’t duplicate the problem. Two weeks later it started coming on again I took it back to the dealer and they reset the codes that was coming up. No other problem with this warning until two weeks ago it came on again. I took it back to the dealer and finally they said they discovered what the problem was so they ended up having to replace the wiring harness and shifter bezel. I think they knew all along what the problem was but just didn’t want to acknowledge the problem because the car was so new. It appears this is a wide spread problem for most of the Jeep Cherokees because I’ve read so many complaints on this issue. I was fortunate that the repairs was totally covered by warranty as the repair would have easily cost in excess of $500 good luck in solving your problem with this.

I have a 2015 Cherokee owned for a year and a half, have the same shifter issue, dash goes out, keeps blowing through headlights high beams are horrible and still can't see. Emergency break engages for no reason, tranny kicks. Dealer states it has no codes so the extended warranty won't cover any of the repairs. I had less issues with a Ford I owned for 13 years, pretty pissed off, never again!

Tyler, and others:
I've written on here a couple of times - I had a 2014 Grand Cherokee nightmare. Six incidents, half of which involved the Jeep getting towed out of my garage. In the end, I filled out a postcard that was in the glove box inside the Lemon Law notification booklet. Mailing the postcard resulted in getting a real contact at Jeep, who worked with the dealer to either a)actually fix the problem, or b)give us fair trade in value for the Jeep (value as if there were no problems). We chose the trade in deal in December when new prices were lowest. We were able to walk away from the problem car without lying about it or putting another family in danger.

I also have had this service shifter message show up more and more often. Initially, it would happen once every 6 months but now it's once every 1-2 weeks. last time I took it in the dealer was finally able to diagnose it and quoted me several hundred to perform the TSB repair for shifter bezel and wiring harness. apparently this isn't covered under the powertrain warranty even though I have a history of transmission shifting concerns. 85, 000 km 2016 Cherokee limited

so the best is looking up this issue, I find my own post from 8 months ago. Yet again, I've gotten the service shifter lights. I've already had this replaced 3 times. It's so unreal. I love driving this car but the non-stop issue is absolutely outrageous. I now have to call into Jeep yet again. You'd think they would fix this already.

So here we are 2020 and this problem is still happening .Wish I had looked up issues with jeeps before I had purchased mine . What a joke !!! This is the 4th time my jeep is in for the prnd service shifter issue. . Highly disappointed never again will I be purchasing a jeep cherokee . My car is a 2018 and at 30 thousand miles it has already had this replaced 4 time and the transmission has been replace as well as the harness assembly . Thought I was buying a car that was reliable . I sure won't be recommending anyone purchase a chrysler jeep product . Good luck everyone cause Chrysler doesn't seem like they know how to fix their mess up

Funny my wife got this error this morning while parked. She shut it off,
and the message went away. I think the computer just glitched for a
minute.. Over 40k miles no real issues. Go JEEP!

Have the battery tested and check the "battery health" and CCA as compared to the battery when it was new.
Get a paper printout of the results.
My new routine is to check the battery every 6 months.
AAA and Batteries Plus bulbs will do it for FREE.
I don't know what the deal is but batteries seem to be a real problem with Cherokees.

Hey there,

It seems like this is an intermittent concern for many of you, and if you (or anyone else here) needs assistance working with your dealer on this, have warranty questions, etc., please send us a DM. I'd be happy to look into ways to assist.

This has been happening with our Cherokee for years; dealers have excuses and more excuses. The bezel has been replaced once or twice... but see post below, one owner just unplugged then re plugged it in to stop the problem.

Update: Just came from dealer yesterday. They refused to do the replacement as per the existing service bulletin on this. The mechanic blamed the problem on the radar detector and phone charger, then added insult to injury by pointing out the unusual wiring under the hood. The epitome of ineptitude and deception was shown here. Our KL has, of course, the "tow enhancement kit", as well as wiring for legally required circuitry for lighting and auxiliary braking.

It's on and off, (2018 Lat+) but it drives fine.. Gonna take it in see what's up....

I had this issue once with my 2018 Cherokee Latitude plus. Of course it was out of warranty, but I had a $100.00 deductible and they fixed. It. It makes no sense that it's 2021 and my new Trailhawk had better not have this issue.
