Question on Lift Gate

Just a question on the lift gate here. So I get into my Cherokee, start driving and notice the doors automatically lock. I love that option and will not change it. What about the back hatch though?

Yesterday my wife and I did a quick run. We pulled into a parking lot and went into different stores. I got back first, jumped in and started it up. When she came out of her store she went right to the back and opened up the lift gate by hitting the button.

That got me thinking - Now what if I am stopped at an intersection - Can anyone just walk up, hit the button and my hatch opens because the fob is in the vehicle? Maybe the above happened because we had stopped and started up without moving.

I am hopeful that the lift gate auto locks along with the doors while moving.

Thanks,

-Eric

I am the only one home at the moment so I can't try what I am about to suggest....but why don't you back the Kee into the driveway (or whatever), leave it in drive, lock the doors and have someone try to open the back lift gate?

That would answer the question. Have there been incidents where this has occurred?

Not sure if you have the keyless entry or not, if you do, there is a sensor to the right of the lift gate button that senses when you are at the door and unlocks it for you. There is also a small button on the right side where you can press it and the whole jeep will lock, just like the ones on the driver and front passenger doors.

Quick question……any chance your wife had her FOB in her pocket or purse, the lift gate reacted to it, and did its easy entry thing when she touched the button?
I believe if you are in drive vs park, once locked, it will not open...but need to test as only a theory at this point:exclamation:
You know what I will test this when my wife arrives home or maybe at work tomorrow. I will drive around the block and then see if it opens or not once the auto locks have activated. I just bet that it will not.

No, my wife did not have a fob on her in the above scenario and I was in park.

I also need to be mindful of the sunroof and remember to close it when I park. In my convertible BMW it did not matter as all the storage compartments would lock when I locked the car.

I will let you know the results. I just do not want to see anyone seriously hurt by doing something stupid like trying to cargo jack me.

on my sorento i traded in if the key fob was in the car and car in park tailgate could be opened. im guessing the same of this but havnt tried it yet.

My liftgate will not unlock with the key fob in my pocket. I don't have the auto liftgate. Is this normal?
The liftgate will not be able to open while you are in drive regardless if you are stopped or moving either without the button on back or the fob or button on dash. It must be in park. Just like the remote start will not work if any door is open or not closed completely.
