Hi, I am new to this site and hope there is someone who can help me. I recently was informed on an inspection when a dashboard service light displayed, that my 4WD is unavailable and the PTU/ Transfer Case needs to be replaced. I was not aware that there was this issue in the Cherokee models between 2014-2017, even though as I reviewed my paperwork, I came across a reimbursement claim. When I called Chrysler Customer Service, they refused to provide any information or help, including additional managers to speak with regarding the issue. I learned the warranty for this problem was upgraded to 8 years/150,000 miles. While my vehicle is under the mileage, I am 3 months over the 8 month cut-off. If I had know there was this potential problem, I would have had the vehicle serviced sooner. I was quoted over $4000 for the repair on the transfer case. I have a 2015 Cherokee limited with 109,000 miles, bought in 10/2014. Chrysler would not let me speak to any one higher up in the chain; the dealer's hands are "tied." Do I have any recourse? Has anyone encountered this problem. I do not have the $4000 and feel Jeep Chrysler should honor the warranty in view of the above information. I would appreciate any thoughts or some direction on how to resolve my issue. Thanks to all and have a great day.

You could Private Message Jeep Cares on this Forum and maybe they can help.
A Jeep dealership will only honor a Warranty Claim if FCA Corporate allows them to.
Personally I think you are out of luck.
You can use 'Search Community' above and 'Recommended Reading' below for lots of information.
Can you drive your Jeep to a car sales place and use it as a 'trade in' on a vehicle?
You could put your Jeep up on jack stands and sell it for parts. You can sell parts on this Forum and lots of other places.
Sell the engine, rear drive module, wheels, doors, Uconnect radio and anything else you can and probably receive $4k.
The power lift gate module and electronic parking brake are on back order from God so you could really get good money for them.
Cancel the Registration and cancel your insurance and that will save you a lot of money.
Well I guess that is enough of my radical rant, stand by, you will get some more civil advice from other Forum members.

Actually Recall W48 would have disabled rear wheel drive gracefully.
You can remove F10 from the PDC to do the same.
At least you have a front wheel drive Jeep. So parting it out probably isn't a very good idea.

My experience with past cars (but other manufacturers) in similar situations is you will be totally SOL on it. They REALLY stick to those expiration dates/mileage amounts to cap their liability. And since this is a fairly known issue (although I can totally appreciate being unaware of it), that just gives them a stiffer backbone in declining due to it being out of the service replacement window. IF they are not budging now, they wont later. And legally they’re on solid ground, so no real recourse there.

Frankly, if not for customer action, they wouldn’t be providing the grace period they are now on this problem. My wife’s Lincoln was 4 days out of extended warranty when an issue came up and I took it in immediately. Ford was a hard ”no”. Different manufacturer, but I think they’re all the same when it comes to this sort of warranty window issue. Same on a past GMC Yukon. Month out of warranty, and a hard “No”. Chevy AWD Astro conversion van in 2001, a couple months out of warranty and transfer case goes…no flexibility. Anyway, good luck. Just sharing as to likelihood based on our experiences in the past. Sorry this issue timed up the way it did for you. Stinks!

PTU failure on the KL Cherokee's are very very common. They typically fail due to the actuator motor going bad inside them. Gear oil seeps into it and fries it. Though I would shop around with other shops. The PTU could be replaced by any good mechanic and last time I checked the actual PTU is not terribly expensive. AD1 around $1,100 and AD2 around $1,700 from multiple online parts dealers. A few years back I had my AD1 PTU replaced for $1,700 parts & labor from the dealership. $4k is way overpriced for that repair. Same boat as you was just out of warranty and Jeep would not budge on honoring the repairs. The extended warranty you speak of is only for certain vin numbers as well.

Thank you very much for your insight. I will definitely be looking around and have already talked with a couple of mechanics that had similar information. I still want to figure out how to get to some one at Jeep/Chrysler. Navigating the websites is not very user friendly and they seem to have it set up to make sure they send you in circles.

I think company customer service phone lines, chat options and websites are Increasingly set up this way. Trying to reach a person, let alone one that can actually assist vs. reading the corporate “road block” line is much more rare these days. Good luck.

I had the same issue on my 2015 cherokee latitude. I was driving to get lunch and when i accelerated at a stop sign a very loud bang occurred, the engine (3.2 V6) shut off, every warning light known to man kind turned on, and every system (traction control, stability control, awd, all of them) became unavailable. I got it towed to the local jeep dealer and they found that my PTU system was basically upside down and had sheared off the transmission destroying a bunch of wires and busted a hole in my oil pan; the bolts from the PTU were all lodged in my transmission as well. It was gonna cost me $7800 to repair my vehicle, but my warranty covered it (i bought the car in may of 22’ as my first car at 16, and it came with a new warranty). i got it back after sitting in the shop for 2.5 months just to bring it back exactly a week later because they somehow missed the coolant leak, serpentine belt, and belt tensioner that needed to be replaced. As of yesterday I also now need new rear brakes, rear tie rods and rear sway bar which would cost me another $2700 but the dealer is paying for all of it because the car now has been in the shop for 1/3 of the 9 months i’ve owned it. And just for extra information, it only has 65k miles so i don’t know what other disasters are gonna happen.

What type of warranty did you so wisely purchase, or was it included with your purchase? Whichever, it is great that you are able to get one with a 2015 model. Very fortunate you had it with those issues!

The dealership i bought it from has a used car bumper to bumper warranty. I don’t remember off the top of my head what the mileage or months/years limits are on the warranty tho.
