Painting chrome trim and emblems

What's you guys' thoughts on painting chrome grill trim and JEEP emblems black?

I was thinking of using plasti-dip. That was if it doesn't come out good or ever needs to be redone it's just a matter of ripping it off and repainting.

I think it would look good depending on the vehicle color. I like the darker accent color that comes on the Trailhawk.

Black. I love black on black. lol
Black Emblems - Plasti Dip

I did my grill this weekend with Plasti Dip. Have already done the wheels. If you do the grill, it's much easier to take the pieces out of the hood. There are two screws holding each piece in, just open the hood and you'll see them. They pop right out. Also each grill insert is labeled 1 through 7. The far left one is #1 so they can be put back into the same spot. Thought that was nice of them to label them. Then I just sprayed them without taping off, so much easier. I'm considering doing the Jeep logos and Cherokee logos, but I'm not sure yet. The little insides of the letters might be difficult to do without some sort of home made template.

Oh man, that looks NICE!
And yeah, doing the front and rear Jeep emblems look like they would be easy. The smaller "cherokee" letters don't look like they'd be much fun... lol
Thanks! That's why I'm not sure I want to touch those. Any imperfections on it would drive me nuts.
If you do end up doing the Jeep decals and/or the Cherokee letters, post some pics in here! I ordered some Plasti-Dip and should have it in a few days. Gonna do the grill pieces first then I'll decide if/how I want to tackle the Jeep emblems and Cherokee letters.
My Limited is Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl and I am thinking of adding chrome rather than eliminating it. Door handle covers and outside mirror covers. Nothing looks better on a black vehicle than chrome accents. One man's opinion.

To each their own. :)

Btw you can pick up Plasti dip at Home Depot. $5.98 a can. I'll post if I decide to do that. I'm thinking of a template way so I don't have to tape like crazy.

Funny just found this, looks easy. Will do it this week sometime.
But I'd use a toothpick rather than a screwdriver like this guy did.

Well the tricky thing about plasti dip is you can't really mask around the letters because the plasti dip will stick to the tape AND the letters and you'll likely tear the plasti dip off the letters along with the tape.

My obsession for chrome probably came from 15 years of Harley ownership. My Harley's had so much chrome on them you needed sunglass just to look at them. Hard to break old habits.

I love this!! Planning on doing this to mine. Good to know that the Plasti Dip works well. Have you done any painting to the interior plastic trim pieces?
you can find vinyl overlays on Etsy for all of our emblems. about 10-13$ a sticker (set) I paid 13$ for jeep front and back and 13$ for cherokee (both sides) the 4x4 is about 8$

heres mine. Yes i saw the placement errors on a couple letters in cherokee, they have since been fixed lol.

I have seriously toyed with the idea of buying grand cherokee badges( the red and black version) trimming off the cherokee part and mounting those on the doors.
also, you can get trail rated badges everywhere online. They look slightly different from factory(most are reversed color schemes) though the dealer option will keep that factory look. I was able to get color matched ones for 10$ each from my dealer.

this is the one i'm referring to but only using the cherokee portion. ( i believe they're off the grand cherokee trail hawk)

final thought, tape around stock badges leaving a square that will guide you in putting them back exactly as they came off. you can pull them all off with a plastic squeege, or fishing line, then paint them. reapply using emblem adhesive. purchased at any parts store or walmart. you need not remove all the 3m tape on the back of any stock emblem. just clean off the balled up parts to leave a smooth surface. apply the emblem adhesive to the back( thin coat). wipe car off with 91% alcohol let air dry, put your glue on the badge. let glue set for about 15 seconds, press onto your car and hold firm for about 30 seconds. wait about an hour before driving. then enjoy.

Personally I'd look at getting the Trailhawk grill trim and badging. I like the fact it's not a black black, they call it something like dark garnet it has a bit of a metal flake/pearl effect to it and is just a shade lighter then black.
