Hi there,

Do you get a strange jiggling noise when you turn your steering wheel? I get a rubbing/friction like-noise when I turn the steering wheel either way. I know the steering is electric and not hydraulic, now, but I don't think this is normal.

Anybody experience something similar?

Thank you

Is it too something dragging? Because if so I occasionally get it too!

No, this is normal for electronic steering. I believe it's the braking system in the wheel that helps you keep in control.

It's really beneficial for offroading... say you slide down a rock and the front wheels naturally want to turn, the system gives you leverage and power over the wheels themselves.

It is the electric assist motor for the steering. Mine has done it since day one. I really only notice it when stopped or at very slow speed.

I noticed the same thing on my TH. Only difference is that i hear that kind of rubbing only when turning right... Nothing when i turn left...

Since it's not a loud sound, i only hear it at low speeds like when parking...

I took note of it and planned to let know my dealer.

Yes, it is like all of you are explaining it...same thing here, so I guess it is okay.

I had a Saturn Vue a few years back, although it had an electric assisted steering wheel, it did not produce any noise; that's why I was wondering.

Thanks for your replies.

I have a Subaru Crosstrek with electric assisted steering and it is quiet.

OK, You've done a lot of driver training, and you own the car I'm considering as an option to the TH. Are you getting rid of the Crosstrek in favor of the trail hawk? If so, what don't you like about the Crosstrek? I would appreciate any feedback.

Yes, I am getting rid of the Crosstrek.

The Crosstrek is severely underpowered IMO. For a daily driver on snowy roads at sea level it would be fine. At elevation or packed with equipment and it is severely neutered. I took my family camping at 5600 ft loaded with camping gear and it literally felt unsafe. I pulled out onto a road from a stop and it almost didn't move.

I also want a low range in which the Crosstrek, or any other vehicle in the segment does not have. I camp a lot in the desert and mountains here in Southern California and the reassurance of a low range is nice.

I am becoming a bit snobbier with age I suppose. I feel like a 22 year college kid in my Crosstrek with it's lack of a refined interior. The Trailhawk also suits the 95% of my on road driving with its refinement and car like feel.

I test drove the Crosstrek before we settled on the TH. I agree that the Crosstrek is severely under powered. I could not believe that in this day and age Subaru would release such an engine - it's a shame really. The interior is also very, very basic.

Truth is there really is no comparison to the Cherokee. The Crosstrek reminded me of my very first VW Golf back in the 80s. That's how far it lacks behind IMHO.

Yes, I drove the Crosstrek and it reminded me of my 91 GL wagon (a sewing machine with wheels). That said, I've been reluctant to pull the trigger on the TH due to quality concerns. I'm thinking of waiting until after Jan 1 to place my order and see if any real negative trends are posted in the mainstream news. Consumer Reports just purchased two Cherokee's for long term test drives. I want to give it a month and see what they have to say about it.

You people need to stop all of this nit picking and just enjoy the JEEP you are paying for. My gosh you must all be 2 year olds with no automotive history. The vehicles back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s made all kinds of racket and nobody thought anything of it. As nicely as I can put it, I think some of you only thought you wanted a JEEP but weren't prepared for what a JEEP is like. In prior days you carried a tool box with you so you could fix you JEEP along side of the road. JEEP made its reputation on being simple to repair.

From 'Animal House'. macfan.....your new Jeep Cherokee Club name is...."macTACT". :)

Ironically, I was talking to my neighbor about my soon to be Trailhawk and just how complex doing anything drivetrain/suspension related will be in the driveway.

I would like to agree with you, but with a price tag of over $30,000, I will continue to nit picking at what is bugging me!

It isn't the 50's 60's or 70's anymore and when laying down 30k+ I want my ride to be smooth and not shift terribly or make strange noises... Things have changed and maybe you should get with the times...
