One of the reasons I change it every 12 months.
Mold will exist only is specific situations.
  • Its needs dark. No sunlight allowed.
  • Humidity over 60%. Higher the better.
  • Temperature over 70 degrees F.
  • No air movement or in other words stale air. A plugged filter would provide that.
It will grow only with all those above conditions.
Under these conditions it will grow unabated.
Also please remember mold is around us all the time.

I would see if the a fresh filter solves your problem of the funky smell first.
Most likely its a damp filter growing the stuff.
Good filters usually have an anti microbial coating on them which helps retard the mold growth.
The filter would have to be plugged up enough the retard the air flow. That air flow would remove the moisture in the system if there ids air flow.
That is assuming the AC drain pan is draining properly also.
Any dealer job would be expensive as there is a big disassembly/reassembly to do.
A dealer clean job is not cheap.
Good luck and let us know how it comes out.

Good advice. I definitely will be changing it every 12 months from now on. The new filter definitely removed the funky smell.
Purchased this one on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HU1MUPE

Jeep is currently at the dealership, having them take a look at it just in case the mold has made it's way to to evaporator. Also want to make sure the drain valve isn't clogged.
Will update when I hear from them. As for price, Jeep is still under warranty. Would assume warranty would apply to this work.

Cleaning the filter system/evaporator, whether or not you failed to follow the manufacturer's recommendation for changing the filter, is NOT warranty work. It is maintenance, not a manufacturing defect to be fixed. The dealer will bet happy to charge you $200 to clean the system using their "special chemicals."

Got the jeep back today. Evaporator coil was cleaned. It was covered under warranty. No cost. They did exactly what is recommended in the star case.

16 months later. AC started smelling funky again on start up. Kind of ridiculous how common this issue is. Cabin air filter moldy once again. I'm sure there is some build up on the evaporator as well. I believe I am outside of my warranty window for this stuff so I'll be giving it a go at cleaning it myself. Anyone have good success with a certain product?

It is a 5 minute job to change a $10 filter, really easy on the KL, some other cars are nightmares.
Just do it once a year (or every 6 months if you live in a humid/coastal climate) and you shouldn't get the issue.
Your local parts store should have some spray that may help get rid of any residue.
This can happen in all cars, btw.

That must only happen in humid climates. I've never had that problem here out west, in any vehicle...😎
This is true, I've had it in NoCal, MD, FL, and GA. Dry/arid states like AZ,UT, and NM are probably way to dry.

Never had that problem in Chicago, but I change the filter every August and make a habit of shutting off the AC but have the blower on high the last half a minute of my drive. No, not every stop, but if the car will be stopped for a couple hours...

Of all the filters this filter's life varies more on my Trailhawk than any of my other cars. I have to change mine out every 12,000 miles due to dirt, bugs, leaves, etc. And I live in Southern California in the city. It's surprising but now I know.

I wonder if the carbon/charcoal-activated filters are more mold resistant.

The backyard mechanic fix is to get some Lysol spray, open all your car doors, start the car and turn the AC on to fan only at full blast with the intake set to pull outside air, not recirculate mode, and then spray the Lysol in to the air intake, which is the black grill area between the hood and windshield. Spray about 10 to 15 seconds on each side, let it run a few minutes, then repeat as needed. Lysol will actual kill the mold and dry it out, then after 2 or three cycles of that just let it continue to run for 5 minutes or so to really dry out. You should also change the filter before doing this so you aren't just blowing mold around as you are trying to clean it.

There is the ol Scotty Kilmer video showing you how.

This trick actually works fairly well and only costs whatever you pay for a can of Lysol, if you don't already have it, and a new air filter. So less than 20 bucks and about 15 or 20 minutes of your time.

So my AC had been smelling a bit funky on start up. Replaced the cabin air filter. I was shocked. Jeep has less than 30k miles on it.
Planning on heading to the dealer and asking for them to check out the evaporator for mold, as well as the drain plug.

Mine was the same. Humid climate, and 3 years (over 30k) later... Oops, I forgot to change it... LOL
I checked it after getting a weird odor once in a while. hahaha
