the key fob I use all the time seems to be less powerful. meaning I can't always start it from my front door anymore, or even as I walk to the car! while my backup still works just fine. thinking this battery can use replacing. make sense? anyone do it? quick & easy? painful & expensive?

Hopefully yours is just the battery. I've noticed both of mine are fairly intermittent. Sometimes it'll work, other times I can stand beside the car and nothing happens (with a new battery in the remote). I can hammer the buttons and eventually it'll start responding again after maybe 10-20 seconds of nothing. I havent bothered taking it in, just chalked it up to be possible interference or maybe the Jeep just doesn't like me.

My personal experience with Key Fobs for cars with Keyless Entry/Keyless Go (push button and/or remote start) is to expect annual battery replacement. The fob is basically "awake" most of the time and more so when it is near or inside the car. I have not replaced the one on my KL but did it a few times with my previous GC and as others said, replacement is fairly easy.

Instead of being alarmed not being able to open or start the car, I decided to put in a reminder on my calendar to replace the batteries every year, instead of waiting for the batteries to fail.

You do not want to have to replace the FOB! If you do hold on to your wallet.....................:surprise:

not working again. well, finicky. I can lock or unlock from a distance but not remote start. took it apart & put it back together, then remote start worked but couldn't turn it off from a distance (not that I ever knew how). might try another new battery & might use the other fob as my main one & keep this one as the backup

Even if your battery fails, just take the emergency key stored in the rear of fob remote, open door and press start button with keyless fob to start.

I'm 2 1/2 years with original battery fob.

just got oil changed at dealer. they tested the finicky fob, report that it works fine and can't explain why it's intermittent. passed battery and antenna test. in fact antenna test reports exact same as the good fob.

no report about the wire crimp recall I mentioned when I arrived. no mention about the software flash for the key fob the guy mentioned last time. and they rotated the snows even tho I didn't ask them to. guys says ok we'll take charge off and rotate them back. oy meanwhile 2 hrs later ...

walk out to my car & try the finicky fob. no luck. use the good one, no problem. service rep comes walking back from someone else's car. I tell him "see it doesn't work". in disbelief he says "really? show me" so I do that & he says "OK I'll order you a new one, should be here Tuesday"

did I miss something? was there something mysterious about testing the fob when it was being "tested"? did no one try it on the car itself? wtf? what if I didn't cross paths with this guy in the parking lot? not impressed. must be a new year's hangover ... rolling my eyes

Hey rumrunner--sorry to hear about this, and glad they are getting a new fob for you. Do you want me to check for any active recalls? You can also go to recalls.mopar.com to check any closed or open recalls as well.

thank you very much Kori, maybe. that's very generous of you. let me see what transpires w the fob. I got 2 mailers reg the crimp recall, 1 saying please wait for parts and a 2nd saying the parts were in please make an appointment. when I called to make the appointment I was told they wouldn't make an appointment specifically for the recall just the oil change. and they would scan the car when I arrived. I handed both mailers to the rep, he scanned the car and never heard another word about it. shame on me for not asking. now I have 3 options for something that should be off my plate already. 1- go back to dealer or call about it, 2- have you check for me & 3- look it up myself online. I also used up and good portion of a saturday for this and I have to go back tomorrow if they call me w the new fob. they couldn't be nicer so let me let them resolve my question. seems like the fair thing to do. make sense?

Gotcha! If you have an open recall with available parts and it was not performed, though, I would like to have it addressed. Let me know what happens!

read the work order which mentioned the open crimp recall. called the Rep who explained they did a flash. went back today for the replacement fob. the 2yr warranty extension I bought has a $100 deductible so I paid that. now I have a good spare again to toss in a drawer :/ also got another flash today but the Rep didn't know what it was for. weird. got out in time to go for a nice long 40 mile bike ride in the cold. may be driving daughter back to school in VT tomorrow. good to get stuff resolved & looking forward to a road trip w my girl
