Hi. My name is Dan and I'm looking for a Toad. Or at least I was...

I'm retiring next year, and my wife and I are thinking about getting a nice RV to see America. For a good sized RV like a Class A diesel pusher, you need a towed vehicle - a TOAD (what RV'rs call them). And one of the most popular TOADs is the Jeep.

While nosing around looking at Jeeps, I found the 2014 Cherokee. After much reading, it occurred to me that a Cherokee might make a great replacement for my Audi A4 when it comes off lease. I.e. even if we don't get an RV (and therefore don't need a TOAD), it looks like the Cherokee could be my next SUV.

The Cherokee seems like a nice, crossover "middle size bear". The Grand Cherokee is too big. The Wrangler is too focused on off-roading. And the other Jeeps seem a bit too small. The Cherokee seems juuuust right.

A V6 Cherokee Limited or TrailHawk looks like it has a good combo of decent off-road capabilities and very good road manners. I.e. good for running to the grocery store and picking up plants at the local Home Depot. And then hopping on rough mountain roads for some weekend fun. And then hooking it up to an RV for some extended trips to parts unknown. All with reasonable gas mileage and good towing capacity (4500 lbs) for "toys".

Best of all it has two features that most people probably haven't noticed - 4 way lumbar support and a tilt & telescope steering wheel. For average sized folks, that probably isn't an issue. But I'm on the short side. A 4-way lumbar support moves in and out, AND up and down. This makes a massive difference for short folks and very tall folks. Add a tilt & telescope steering wheel and you have nirvana.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the rest of the Cherokee package lives up to the preliminary info.

Regards,

Dan.

P.s. Be very careful using the info on the Jeep Cherokee website and crosscheck against other Cherokee data. After spending a lot of time on their website, I found several serious issues. These include inaccurate data and user interface bugs.

For example, click on Vehicles --> Cherokee --> Capabilities. The first one shows the 2.4L engine. Now click on "Feature Availability". A window pops up. Now click on "4X4" button at the top and watch what happens. Window corruption.

But it gets better... Now click on the "X" to close the window. If you're using IE or an iPad, the window will close. If you're using Firefox, the window won't close.

I've been able to reproduce the window corruption on IE, Firefox, and iPad.

The Cherokee looks very promising, but their website needs lots of work.

Welcome Dan. I think this will be a popular TOAD.
Welcome. I did not see a problem with the feature availability popup. It switched information and closed fine.
Thanks. I appreciate the warm welcome.

Regards,

Dan.
How did that A4 treat you? :D

do you want to shoot a rocket at it yet?
Perhaps a rock at an A4 but if you are talking S4 or S5 I am all ears. Those are beautiful rides.

So is the next gen VW Golf R and GTD.
Oh no someone brought up German garbage vehicles :D
Please tell me more about how unreliable it was and how you overpaid for parts and labour :D

I love it when people bring old biases into a conversation. When I mentioned I was thinking about a Jeep Cherokee to my son (loves his Toyota FJ) and son-in-law (loves Ford trucks of all kinds) both said that Jeeps were complete junk.

My 2011 Audi had exactly two issues when I bought it new - a missing screw in the dashboard and a rattle in the dash. Dealer fixed both. With those minor exceptions, it has been perfect for two years.

It's a very good car. With the 6-speed manual, it hits 60 in 6.5 seconds and gets 31 mpg on the road (measured on long trips). It's very solid and reasonably quiet on the road given the 18" performance tires.

Today, all cars of any reasonably decent quality are expected to be reliable. The Jeep GC had problems in the past. Current ratings of the 2012 (latest I could find) show them to be very reliable.

If I don't need to tow it four-down and don't mind giving up heavy off-roading capabilities, I may go for a BMW X3. It's very expensive, but the handling is amazing. Serious fun to drive. Better than any other SUV I've ever driven and better than the vast majority of cars I've driven. And reliability of the most recent models is good.

If you folks want to have good scrap, I'll invite you to a barbeque with my son and son-in-law for a "discussion". I'll referee. :D

I'll agree, German vehicles now are having less issues than the past but when there is a probably is a freaking huge one as so it seems.
the parts and labour cost is what kills me and steers me away really. Have been domestic fan for as long as I could remember and proud of it.
Just go with what you like. Piss on over analyzing.

Consumer Reports hates Wranglers. I get in mine with the doors and top off and have a blast. You can't get that with any other vehicle. People want to ride in it at the beach.

I get in my wifes lux ute (the GC Overland) and love to drive it.. I live in So Florida so I crank up the in-seat A/C and blow cool air up my arse and she can't get me out of it! Completely different experience than the Wrangler and it is great!

I think the Cherokee TH with a command view or (my personal favorite) skyslider is going to be a blast.

Plus one. Two potential issues though... One is whether I need to tow my new SUV. The other is that the Cherokee is brand new - platform, engine, and transmission. Year one cars typically have issues. Been there, done that.

Cars in their first year of production can be a PITA, so far it seems like with Fiat and Alfa Romeo more in control of Chrysler Corp and it's sub-brands that things are improving on all levels.

I wouldn't be too worried about the new Cherokee in it's first year of production.
There will be issues to work out when it comes to first year production vehicles. It's in the hands of the manufacturers to take care of. And they usually do or it will be brought up as a lemon and they wouldn't want that status.
Not unless there is an under the hood fire (Ford) then I wouldn't worry too much. The transmission so far seems to be the one thing every one is keeping an eye on. Have you guys heard anything on the 9 speed transmission whether the kink was worked out or not?
Are you returning the A4 as a lease? Or keeping it for a long time?

It seems like Audis don't do that well once they age. And parts are pricey from what I've seen. They are nice cars. But I am a Mercedes kind of guy. I'd love to own an AMG one day. Just too expensive to own and operate. Not very practical.

This is a good point. There are a lot of people who can swing the payments, but when it comes time to spend nearly $1000 to have a headlight replaced learn the costs of going with a BMW or Mercedes.
