All parts of the 4x4 system were used and put under pressure. It passed every test and exceeded my expectations. In fact, I was guaranteed part way up the trail that I'd have to turn around because of the challenges ahead. They were wrong.

We plan to tour Colorado next August, looking to explore and photograph ghost towns, mines, old railroads, etc. Can't wait to see it again as we had a grand time there a few years ago in our Mitsu Outlander. The Trailhawk should make things even better this year - TedB

I did this today. Beat the crap out of the RRO rock rails (they proved their worth) and definitely hit the skid plates a couple times too. No way I would want to do it without rails. Lots of scrapes are a testament to how badly my vehicle would look without them. I definitely used 4Lo, the locking rear, and every bit of driving skill I had at the top. The Destination ATs definitely need more sidewall protection. I gashed 2 tires a bit. Not enough to be a big issue, and no flats, but some definite surface damage. Probably replace them with something more durable at some point.

So did this without rails and yeah, I would have felt MUCH better if I had them. I was super cautious the whole ride up to the rock house. I actually thought the trail down into Alice was harder. There were a few spots with obnoxiously large rocks smack dab in the middle of the trail.

There were some rocks that were completely unavoidable with rails or skid plates both on the way up and on the way down to Alice. On the way down there was even 2 rock bridges you had to traverse where the trail was GONE between them. Rolling off either would have resulted in a bad high center. 2nd time I needed a spotter. Other time was on this massive rock over on the way up close to the top. I remember thinking it seemed like it should have been rated a bit higher on Trail Damage based on the descriptions. There were some big rocks to get over in places.

perhaps the trail is more eroded then when the TD folks rated it? With all the rain this past few months...???

It's possible. Even just in the last week we got a bunch of rain.

Sounds like the conditions have gotten a lot worse. I did this trail in my Liberty a few years ago, no skid plates and no rails. I had a couple nerve wracking moments when I bottomed out, but it did a great job. I was looking forward to trying it with the Trailhawk, but I might have to wait until I get some rails.

I still don't think its too bad. At the top there is plenty of area to bypass things if it gets to nasty.

I'll definitely be making the trip again when the pass opens back up. Maybe get a group going? My Wifey took my Trailhawk so I'll probably end up running it in the Rubi.
