Is the new Jeep Cherokee as innovative as the original XJ Cherokee?

I know a lot of you are probably familiar with the original XJ Jeep pictured below, which was a big deal for it's time. But with how the competitive SUV market is now, is the new Cherokee as innovative as the original?

The new Cherokee is a big deal, it's unlike anything Jeep ever made (clearly) so i would have to say yes it's just as innovative as the original.

I never considered even remotely considered a Jeep. In fact, I've not owned an American car in over 30 years. So I don't know if the CJ brought non-Jeep customers to the Jeep brand.

I do know that the Cherokee attracted me. One fellow in this forum included a comment about "Jeep fans" in this forum. I'm NOT a Jeep fan. (It's not that I dislike them. It's just that I'm not a fanboy.) The Cherokee is different. It gave me an "Aha!" moment. My kinda vehicle.

Therefore, I think it will bring a lot of new customers into the fold. I.e. it could have a huge impact.

Assuming I'm right, I think that the way that they market and sell Jeeps will need to change a bit. It's OK for them to leverage the Jeep reputation of off-road robustness, but for many of us it also needs a good balance of on-road robustness in a moderate size vehicle. I.e. a good balance. The bottom line is that it should be a balanced fun vehicle.

Dan.

I agree Dan and I have been trying to say this for quite some time. I think they have it nailed with the various trim levels on this vehicle but some of the Jeep diehards can be crazy thinking the brand can survive on Wranglers alone.

The nice thing about the new Cherokee is that there are enough options available that it works for more casual drivers, and the people who care about off-roading and performance.

Quick story...

When I went into the local Jeep dealer several days ago asking about the Cherokee, they had a GC SRT on the floor. Since I was interested in the interior and wanted to check out their 4-way lumbar support, I thought, "What the heck. Give it a try."

First, I was very impressed with the quality of the interior. Second, with the 4-way lumbar support (critical for a short guy), the seat was VERY comfortable. It was definitely NOT like the spongy glob of mush that I had expected.

So they take a guy who has owned only German and Swedish cars for the last 15 years (which have awesome seats) and opened his eyes. How many other people are out there - who would never dream of buying a Jeep - suddenly decide to visit their local Jeep dealer just because of the Cherokee.

Jeep has some great opportunities and great challenges here. My initial impression of the Cherokee is quite positive. OTOH, there are several things about the company (Chrysler & Jeep) that bother me. The world has changed; Jeep (the company) needs to change with it.

We shall see...

Dan.

You should have test drove the SRT. Would have blown your mind.

Speaking about SRT, any word on when we can expect to see an SRT version of the 2014+ Cherokee?

If sources are to be believed, the 2014 GC's 0 to 60 is 4.5 seconds. That's quite brisk.

The same source claims that the 2014 Cherokee is 6.6 seconds:
2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Limited 4X4 (3.2L V-6) 0-60 mph 6.6
Not as "brisk" as the GC, but fast enough for my needs.

Can anyone confirm these numbers?

Late breaking news... I just read another review that indicated the 2014 SRT GC's 0 to 60 is a wimpy 4.95 seconds. Sorry for the bad news.

Dan.
5 seconds for such a heavy car is still pretty impressive in my eyes.

I should have added a smilie. Yes, that's very impressive.

If leaning towards a TH. If the TH handles well on the road and the 0-60 is less than about 7 seconds, then I'll be happy.

For comparison, my 2011 Audi A4 and my wife's 2013 Turbo Beetle both hit 60 in about 6.5 seconds. They are both fast and fun to drive. It's not the exact number that counts, it's just one performance measure to help decide if the overall performance "good enough". I.e. fun to drive.

yeah even at 6 seconds I wouldn't be complaining for such a heavy vehicle of this type.
Any more updates on the SRT model? I really want to see if they end up with the turbo 6 cylinder.
Not going to be anytime soon. You might have to wait YEARS.

I think it is less about the exact number and more about feeling the power when you put your foot on the gas pedal. It sucks when you try to get going and the power just isn't there. The 0-60 measure is just a way of giving a number and measurement to that feeling.

Nicely stated.

It could be sooner than that, there were rumors that Jeep wanted to expand on it's SRT line, the next SRT Jeep could be a cherokee.

That would really upset all the people waiting on a SRT4 Dart. :dodgy:
agreed. I think the Dart would be next. The Cherokee has to hit the market first and see how its doing before SRT dedicates to it.
