Hood Shakes While Driving

39695 Views 90 Replies 42 Participants Last post by  XJ99
2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. Noticed in wind or when passing a semi that the hood moves up and down a bit. Any other experiencing this? First time I noticed it, I thought that maybe my hood was unlatched, but checked and it wasn't.

(Side note, it usually happens on the South Dakota Interstate, where the speed limit is 80, and I go 82...)

We had some high winds and we were going about 70 on the interstate. The hood shook so bad it triggered an ESS error because it thought the hood was open. Fault cleared on a restart.
So.. there is a hood open sensor? Is there any dash indication that the hood was open?
This is interesting... I have not seen any hood shake on my 2019, but.... I have had the ESS error occur 2 times while traveling at about 70 MPH on the Interstate!
No observed shake, but an ESS error that cleared on re-start.

You may be on to something here.
The OM does list open hood as a condition that disables stop/start, and if the hood is open while moving, there is a single chime. I did hear a chime when I got the message.

Yeah, there's a sensor (aka a button that the hood presses on when it's closed)

The hood is also an alarm trigger IIRC
So my hood has been flexing quite a bit. Any time I drive 60+, especially when driving into a headwind or 70+ on the interstate. I've adjusted the hood numerous times and even had the dealer look at it. To be honest, it is a bit unnerving to have it jump around that much. The reflection off the hood as it dances around is distracting for sure. A handful of times it's tripped the hood sensor as mentioned earlier in this thread. I bought a cheapo dashcam recently and uploaded a few clips to Youtube to get some perspective from others hopefully. Take a look, I'd love other opinions on whether I should be sweating it or not. The last clip is where it tripped the hood sensor.

Yeah when that 18 wheeler went by, it tripped the hood sensor.
You can adjust the hood bump stops yourself, or trust the dealer
to do it for you. Sometimes I feel like I'm smarter than half the
techs in the service department. LOL
I've gone through adjusting the hood probably 4-5 times in addition to giving the dealer a shot. I'm convinced at this point that the shaking isn't a product of the hood jumping up and down in the front near the last where the adjusters are. Instead I think it's a product of the hood being so light and flexible. Regardless of how tight the latch is the middle is continuing to to flex significantly. Poor design and testing in high winds or high speeds. I doubt there is much that can be done at this point despite how distracting it is.
Yeah, that doesn't look normal. I had a minor amount of shake like that when under carwash blowers or passing big trucks but a 1/4 turn of each hood support took care of it. Can you try cranking the hood supports up high enough so the hood won't latch and then back them off until it will? Not sure what else to try.
Yep I've tried adjusting all the supports various times. Very minor improvement. I think it's just too darn thin...
Hmmmm. I'm going to have to keep an eye out for this on my next highway run for sure.
My hood wiggles a bit when a truck goes by, but that's about it. I may fiddle with the hood stops a little, too.
Put Play-doh on top of the rubber bumper then close the hood, open the hood.
Should give you a clue of the amount of clearance between the hood and the bumper.
On my 2014 the only time the hood shakes is when I don't have it latched properly.
So I did some quick investigating with mine. I found the hood adjuster knobs to be at an ok height. The latch was also tight, not an issue. I then closed the hood and wondered about the talk of Chrysler removing weight from the hood. I started pressing in different areas, and the top hood skin seems no thicker that heavy duty alumium foil. Makes sense, when driving, wind force will cause the top of the hood skin to flex. Try it out.

Exactly what I've noticed. I screwed with the adjusters once, which didn't do jack, let alone ****. Put them back to where they were pretty much so the hood lines are correct as well. Only really noticeable when doing 75-85 MPH and/or real windy days. Iv'e become numb to it, just like my cat..

Watch the hood deform as you go through the drying area at an automatic car wash, lol

I have the same problem with hood shaking on 2019 trail hawk elite...Happens ~70 mph...I'll try to adjust bump stops also
The wife drove from Colorado Springs to Spearfish. Halfway between Douglas and Gillette, a Semi drove by and the hood shook so much that it popped up on the latch. She was able to pull over and lock it back down. On the outskirts of Gillette, it happened again. I gave her directions to the Jeep dealer in Gillette and they immediately told her that others have had the same problem and a tech adjusted the bump stops. The hood "flex/flutter" issue improved enough to finish the trip and return to Colorado Springs. I popped the hood and was going to adjust things better, but now the passenger side upper bump stop is missing.

Since it is a 2019, I can't find any parts for it online. When I look at older vehicles to find the parts, I find the Support Bracket, 68144540AB, but the 2019 has a plastic "screw base" and the older support bracket does not.

EDIT/UPDATE: I went back out to take a picture of the mount and when I had the light out to look at the mount, I found the missing bump stop! It was wedged at the base of the air cleaner box. But, I noticed that the 2019 "radiator support mount" is a different design than the 2014-2018 mounts I was seeing online. The 2019 has a "bar with mount welded on it" style. I attached a picture of the new style mount on the 2019. I don't know when the changeover occurred, but it is definitely different than other mounts.

Sorry to hear some of you have experienced this problem.

We had taken a ~1000 mile road trip (at about the second month we had this vehicle) out thru the back country roads (long straight stretches that we were cruising at 70-85MPH -sssshhh don't tell the sheriffs) and didn't/hadn't noticed any hood shake or vibrations, thus far.

But, I sub'd this thread for future reference and info, just in case.

I go through an auto carwash once a week, no wiggle, no deformation. LOL.

I had it quite bad, but adjusting the bump stops took most of it out.
I’m not sure what is going on with the ‘19 hoods. Mine hasn’t moved a bit since new (80 mph, car wash, etc.) so no need to adjust the stops. I’m not the only one. Some folks with hood shake adjusted the stops and it goes away. Some folks with shake adjust the stops and it doesn’t help. Build date doesn’t seem to matter. Odd.

I've experienced it only slightly in mine. Generally at 80+ mph speeds when I encounter turbulent air such as passing a large vehicle or driving next to a semi. I do see some flex in normal driving but nothing that's particularly alarming considering the hood is so thin and there's a foot or so in front of the latch.
