Hood Shakes While Driving

39696 Views 90 Replies 42 Participants Last post by  XJ99
2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. Noticed in wind or when passing a semi that the hood moves up and down a bit. Any other experiencing this? First time I noticed it, I thought that maybe my hood was unlatched, but checked and it wasn't.

(Side note, it usually happens on the South Dakota Interstate, where the speed limit is 80, and I go 82...)

Several 19's are reporting this, here's a thread, hope it help and let us know.

Mine does it too, I need to adjust the hood adjusters to try and eliminate it.

I'll add another '19 Trailhawk to the mix. Mine does it too. Also notice it when going under the air-dryer in the car wash.

I would assume, since I had to adjust the bumpers on my 2014 when I picked it up from the dealer after a special order, that there is most likely an adjustment needed to raise the bumpers to meet the hood when latched so it is snug. You can also align the hood with the fenders using the same bumpers, adjusting where it sits when closed.
Mine does it too. I made sure the hood was latched down all the way, and it was. I think it is just the wind pushing down the upper skin of the hood. I didn't hear any knocking from the front latch when it happened.
This has been discussed at length in other threads, some have even blamed the aluminum hood design. But only a relatively few KLs have this issue, and those who have adjusted the bumpers seem to have solved the symptoms. A simple fix. Mine is completely stable up to 85 anyway, it was a special order and came this way.

I'm not sure that it's relatively few. The complaints have been piling on, some say they haven't been able to stop it, others say they have with adjustments, but I've seen only one or two 2019 owners chime in saying that it wasn't a problem at all. I think HoodGate is in the making...

This forum is a pretty good crucible of potential problems. If you see consistent complaints (like with the 2014-2015 transmissions) it's generally a harbinger of a widespread issue.

My 2019 trailhawk has hood shake too. I have not tried adjusting the bump stops so i think i'll try that.
Mine does this too, I noticed it going down the freeway at about 65-75 mph. Should I have the dealer look at it, or is this "normal" I mean the hood on my 18 was solid as a rock at those speeds.
My hood is solid into the 80s. Either there are different hoods on different ‘19s, or the hood supports are not adjusted correctly on some.

+1 on the hood shake. I think maybe there aren't large enough fore to aft stiffening contours (for lack of a better term ). When I first bought it I got out to check the good latch.

Just a weak hood from being made light. Iv'e gotten use to it, but it really shouldn't be that way. The future of cars being lighter, it might be like that. Gone are the days of the old 70's and older hoods that took at least 2 people (if not 3) to lift off and on lol.
If the hood is fundamentally weak or too light, how do we explain the fact that many owners do not have the shake? Have those with the shake tried to adjust the bumpers? Or asked the dealer to fix it? (Well, given the incompetence of some dealers that may not work). I’m not denying that the shake exists, but there is a reason for it, and poor design doesn't explain all the facts.

2019 Overland. NO hood shake. Zero.
I would think that adjusting the stops should solve this for folks with the problem.
2 front stops adjusted, then put back to where they were originally at as I didn’t notice a difference. Is there more than the 2 front stops that are adjustable? I did not pay attention to that. I didn’t see any rubber mount over the engine cover but didn’t look that hard either.

Four adjusters; two on top facing up (pushing up), two in front facing forwards (pushing forward), that's two per side. 2014-2018 model years, should be same for 2019.
Noticed this on the trip to Gettysburg last week. Getting some air off a big truck and it started bouncing.. thought the hood was about to fly off.. pulled over and noticed it has abit of upwards slop in it. (can lift the latched hood from the front abit).

'19 trailhawk.
Yea, It's definitely not the adjusters. I can grab the front of the hood with my pinky (by the grills) and release it and watch the hood wobble a bit right there. Can only imagine on freeway with windy day. Tgough what I do see is up on the center of the hood where the black decal is and towards the front top where it goes vertical. Windy days and freeway speed it's a wobbling like a 4' x 8' piece of sheet metal before (****, even after) you put the cross breaks in it.
I only adjusted the the two on top facing up. Think it was
one full turn each. I can grab my grill and pull in every
direction now, and it doesn't budge.
