Hello,

I have been on here and on Google. It looks like my Jeep should take 9012 bulbs. But it also seems 9006 might fit. I am getting conflicting results. And a lot of yardage to cover in finding the right answer. Anyone know for sure?

My bulbs are factory and after 44,300 miles it might be time to swap them out.

2014-2015 9012, 2016 9006. There are aftermarket options for the 9006, but not the 9012. Which might explain why the HID system for the 2014-2015 doesn't work on the 2016.

Hmmm. I did some reading as well, and you may not like this... First, the good news : it seems that 9006 bulbs could fit into a 9012 socket with no modification (but fitting a 9012 into a 9006 socket may require a little tab trimming...).
The not-so-great news : 9012 (HIR2) bulbs are known to be superior in output to 9006s, at equal wattage, so... spending that much on 9006 PIAAs may ultimately prove to be a waste of your money...

Hey Len,

If I've followed the HID kit threads correctly, it seems that early 2016 MYs still had the 9012s... but then later on they shipped with 9006s. That's why 2016 owners need to check their OEM bulbs before they order a kit.

Oh goodness does anyone really know? Owners manual says HIR2, sylvania website says 9006 for 2016 and 9012 for 2014-2015. In the past I've always trusted the sylvania website. But I haven't got new light bulbs. Hard to justify when I replaced my entire fog light housing with LED.

Yep I've heard that before. I remember XenonDepot having to deal with a few returns on some 2016 kits because of the bulb switch.

I've searched on here and google as well, and I just can;t seem to get this answered, either. Maybe it's above my head! Seems like I'm in the same boat as the OP...trying to get the right/best stuff! If considering an HID conversion, is there any advantage to using 9012 bulbs, or are the advantages to that bulb limited to halogen models only? For example, Diode Dynamics offers 9005, 9006, and 9012 bulbs, all the same price. Is sticking to 9005 advised, or...? Is using a 9012 even possible? Thanks!

If your vehicle uses 9005 bulbs then it would be best to get a 9005 HID kit as there would be no difference in terms of light output since the wattage is the same.

Here is a vehicle specific kit we have for the 9005 fitment: 2016 JEEP CHEROKEE HID KIT. It includes everything you need for a plug n play install without any errors.

I was under the impression that 9012 HIR2s were superior to 9005s as far as light output, even if they have the same wattage. But surely not a big step up, just mildly superior. I have 9012s and have terrible overall lighting performance from my headlights... and not because of the 9012s per se, but because of the projectors.
I do find it disappointing that FCA went from slightly better 9012s to 9005s, knowing the halogen projectors did poorly to begin with.

Went back to the post. Well, Danny was right. I read quickly and thought the question was for halogen 9012s, but it was indeed for HIDs. And of course the HID replacements for both would be identical as far as performance.

HIR headlights are better light output than standard halogens.

My 2014 Civic Si uses 9006s so you can use 9012s in the headlight sockets (you just need to trim the tab a little to get the light to fit. Also in 9005s you can use 9011 HIR in that socket.

HIR stands for Halogen Infrared Reflecting. This technology was invented by Toshiba and I think only Phillips still makes HIR bulbs now.

I ordered a 9012 hid kit. My dealer said my vin used 9012. Went to install it today and my 2016 uses 9005 I recorded the correct kit and will be returning the 9012. Annoyed lol

Not that it helps now, but it may help someone else...on the clear headlight lens, look at the etched numbers and letters on the bottom, and it will tell you what bulb you have. For example, I too have 9005 bulbs in my 2016, and my lenses are etched "HB3" which is a 9005 bulb.
