It's also an attempt to limit interference on the ham bands. With CB/FRS/GRMS, you can annoy other folks for a couple of miles around. With a ham rig, you can be a nuisance to people on the other side of the planet.
Mostly true, but with a 50-watt GMRS and the right set of repeaters in the mix you can "reach out and touch someone", at least across large land masses.

It's not as easy as ham bands to annoy people long distance, but it is possible!

Understood....but I want something mobile just like the one @tracy08172002 installed and I want it hidden....doesn't have to be hidden in the center console....I could just strap it to the side of the console next to the shifter....
Depending on the radio there are the options for all the controls in hand mic therefore allowing you to stuff the power/antenna block out of sight.
I have both my GMRS and CB mounted under passenger seat and both handsets plug into center console and or store in passenger seat out of the way.

Update: Got the larger antenna in and mounted. Mounted using a Firestik door jam mount used for CB antennas. It holds fine with the tapping screws that came with it but I think I’m going to put in some rivets just in case. Changed the wire routing to go behind the taillight, following the taillight’s wiring through the grommet and along trim pieces until right around the passenger’s seat. There it goes under the carpet to the center console.

It’s the RETEVIS MR300 antenna - fiberglass radome 1200mm/47ish inches for GMRS. It comes with a rather cumbersome mount that doesn’t really have a decent home on the KLs, so after watching someone on YouTube named “Blackhawk KL” I took inspiration from his Firestik CB Antenna Door Jam Mount in the rear. Did have to drill a wider hole in it though.

Your suppose to, as well as have your $35 liscense
Since the license is good for 10 years, I prefer to think of it as my "$3.50 per year" license. Sounds more reasonable to me. ;)

Yup, floating right below the 2.0 mark. Not dangerously high by any means but not the optimal <1.5 advertised either. Probably will run a better grounding if I want to get picky.
Your antenna is almost certainly a 5/8 wavelength design. They perform about 3dB better than a 1/4 wave whip. Both need an adequate ground plane for best performance.

hate antennas for that. best location isn't the best practical 24/7 location or best looking. everything is a compromise
I hear ya! Best spot for the 5/8 or 1/4 wave vertical would be dead center of the (metal) roof. For a bumper mount, a center fed 1/2 wave dipole design would probably work the best (no ground plane required).
